25.01.2022 This week we will be making a few changes to try and maintain extra personal space in the studio whilst exercising. _ Where possible, we will try to preference two clients per hour class. Some will remain with three clients, but if you would like to make a change, then let us know. For now, classes will be 50 minutes, to maximise time for cleaning, and minimise numbers in the studio during class change over. _ Please continue to bring your own towel, socks and water bottl...e. Wash your hands before and after class in the studio sink to avoid the bathroom door knobs, and practice good respiratory etiquette. _ Suzi and I usually change springs and move equipment, so lets continue this practice to limit shared surfaces. _ There is the option to take classes online via zoom, should the need arise. 21.01.2022 TRIANGLE BREATHING _ The triangle breath is most in tune with our primary nature. _ Inhale, Exhale, Pause...... _ Take a few minutes to connect with your breath. The pause at the end of your exhale is when you let your diaphragm completely come to rest (into its dome shape). Try not to cut off your exhale, but continue to relax into the pause. Its looks like a pause from the outside, but on the inside, your exhale is continuing. In doing this, you are telling the biggest muscle in your body to relax, no need to rush for an inhale, all is okay. The body and the brain will respond accordingly. _ Also learn to release your jaw on your exhale. We hold a lot of tension in our jaws, so allow your jaw, your tongue, your neck and shoulders to soften with your exhale. _ Make the pause after your exhale, a comfort zone. Dr Peter Litchfield via Dan Brule _ When you allow your diaphragm to reset and exhale completely, then your inhale should become easier. You will feel the impulse of your diaphragm ready to contract again and take a breathe in. You start to breathe more in harmony with your body, with nature. _ The sides of the triangle do not need to be even. Play with different lengths of the inhale, exhale and pause, without forcing it. Then take a moment just to let your body take control again. Observe your natural breath. _ Squeeze every atom of air from your lungs until they are almost free of air as a vacuum. Notice how your lungs automatically completely refill themselves with fresh air. 21.01.2022 Heres a great video of Thomas Myers myofascial expert and author of best selling book Anatomy Trains explaining how the human body is an interconnected tensegrity system. It is 20 minutes, but a wonderful explanation of tension and compression, and how our skeleton is controlled by the compressive and expansive forces of our fascia and connecting tissues. We often know what is over working - that is where we feel pain. But we need to try and retrain what is under workin...g. Balance the system. In our online mat classes, I am trying to explore the movement of all our joint complexes from head to toes, so that you can gain a deeper understanding of how we move. 19.01.2022 Thanks to everyone who was able to join us on Friday night to celebrate 11 years of Pilates & Movement! _ After moving back home to Coolum in 2006, I worked for two local physio practices for a few years. One being Absolute Body Care in Marcoola where Little Boat Cafe is today. When the physio downsized, a small group of Pilates keen people stayed with me and we set up in Coolum Civic Centre every Monday and Wednesday. Our first Wednesday being the 7th January, 2009. We the...n moved to Town of Seaside, and now our new location here in Marcoola. _ As Coolum and the Sunshine Coast has grown, so has the Pilates and fitness industries! So much has changed. Not long ago, it was almost impossible to find a certified Pilates teacher to fill in whilst I was away. _ As a Polestar Education mentor, I had students travel from Brisbane to study, but very few local students. In 2013, @suzi.strachan joined the studio to do her Polestar training, and since then, has remained a presence in the studio and my life, a great allie to share ideas and counsel with. Thanks Suzi! Funnily, we share the same birth date! Yay! _ We are currently putting the semi-private class schedule together. 14.01.2022 The human body is innately intelligent and intuitive. Every move it makes is for a reason and every symptom it produces is a request for change. If your body i...s telling you it needs help, follow the signs, listen to the communication its giving you and then give it the input its asking for and youll return to optimal health quick smart. The key word here is listen. Tuning into what our body is saying is something weve become somewhat desensitized to. Feelings like fatigue, stiffness, discomfort and so much more are lumped into the category of normal and go largely ignored. 14.01.2022 Interesting conversation with Dr Greg Emerson and Dr Roby Mitchell about the intelligent design of our immune systems. They discuss how viruses can attach to, and enter our cells, and what we can do to assist our bodys natural immune defence, through diet and supplements (if needed), preferably filling our diet with foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals. Vitamin A from Fermented Cod Liver Oil, Vitamin C from berries or Kakadu plum here in Australia, Vitamin D from healthy sun exposure to our skin, Zinc from Oysters (not sure about that one ), Iodine from Kelp, Selenium from Brazil Nuts, Black Seed Oil from the Nigella Sativa plant, preserving Melatonin by limiting our exposure to blue light, avoiding sugars and trans fats. "Thyroid disorders, especially hypothyroidism and the presence of benign thyroid nodules, are risk factors significantly associated with frozen shoulder, rising the chances to 2.69 times of developing frozen shoulder. 12.01.2022 The thoracic diaphragm is a dome shaped muscle at the base of your ribs. It is the floor of your thoracic cavity and the roof of your abdominal cavity. It attaches to the bottom of your breastbone at the front, and to the inside of your 7th - 12th rib at the back. A bit like a jelly fish with tentacles, it has two tendinous structures that run down the inside of your vertebra and attach to the front of your 1st - 3rd lumbar vertebra. Its fibres form a central tendon that co...nnects with the connective tissue at the base of your heart. It is your primary muscle for respiration. During inhalation, it flattens and contracts to create more space in your thoracic cavity for your lungs to take in air. In doing that, it massages the organs of your abdominal cavity. On exhalation, it passively relaxes and returns to its dome shape expelling the air in your lungs. _ Above all, learn how to breathe correctly. 11.01.2022 Have you heard me say that your shoulder blade moves like a windmill? In this image, the arm is abducting, which means it is reaching out to the side and up. Imagine the ball of your arm bone rolling in your shoulder socket, and gliding inwards and down as you move past 90 degrees. Your collarbone levers up, and your shoulder blade rotates as well. You will feel the bottom tip of your shoulder blade reaching around your rib cage. Everything spirals in the opposite direction... as your arm lowers. The same movement happens when you take your arm forward and up. The ball rolls in your shoulder socket, and slides down the back of your socket, as you move past 90 degrees. Your hand will be a little wider than your shoulder, therefore keeping space across the top of your shoulder. Your collarbone also spirals backwards slightly as it levers up, and your shoulder blade rotates. Always try to move within the range that maintains your ball spiralling in the groove of your socket. This is different for every body. Try to avoid the muscles at the top of your shoulder pulling your arm up. This will only continue to create imbalance around your joint. Stay moving within your range, to train the reciprocal movement of your shoulder muscles, and in the long term, increase your shoulder range of motion. _ See more

10.01.2022 So today is International Pilates today. And I would like to pay tribute to Pilates teacher and fitness icon, Mari Winsor, who lost her long battle with ALS this week. Mari trained as a dancer at the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, and built a twenty year long career as a dancer, choreographer and teacher across the U.S. and Europe. She was a featured dancer in music videos like Michael Jacksons Smooth Criminal. ... In her 40s , she found Pilates and trained with Joseph Pilates protege, Romana Kryzanowska, to receive her official Pilates teacher certification in 1992. In 2003, Winsor introduced Pilates to the mass market, by releasing her first infomercial partnering with Guthy-Renker, and went on to co-author fitness books and produce 30 videos, which sold more than 50 million units. Having a Pilates studio in Los Angeles, she built a long list of star clients and friends. She made many appearances on U.S. magazines and television shows like Good Morning America and Oprah Winfrey Show. She was diagnosed with ALS in 2013. A disease that robs people of the ability to walk, talk, move, speak, swallow and eventually to breathe. She continued to teach even though her voice was a little funny. My message is to never give up she said. Never stop moving and not to focus on what you cannot do, but focus on what you can do - and go from there. 05.01.2022 The fascial system is unique and continuous, it is responsible for the communication and interaction of all body parts. In other words, a stimulus in a given location of the body will have influence throughout the whole body system. Shoulder pain for example can be a response to a stimulus not necessarily generated in the shoulder, since everything is connected. Due to biotensegrity, forces are distributed, spaces are maintained and changes in tension in one place have repercussions throughout the whole body. The word tensegrity is coming from tension and integrity. When we apply this concept to human beings, the correct term is biotensegrity.

05.01.2022 We find ourselves in strange times. I think very few of us feel grounded or stable at the moment. We all need to continue to breathe and ground ourselves through sunshine, exercise and meditation. I really need to take this advice! We are grateful for your continued support through this difficult time for small business. Our studio is fresh and clean, and we are in the fortunate location, that we can open the timber doors and let the fresh sea air in. We have always had a str...ong cleaning regime for equipment and surfaces, and this has now been strengthened to cover every surface after every class. Clients are always asked to bring fresh socks and a small towel for head and face. We also ask that everyone brings a personal water bottle for class. There is the option to purchase your own Pilates loops for the equipment. I will attach this information in a following post. The studio front door will be left open. We ask that you wash your hands before your class. And all digital check-ins will be done manually for now. Stay healthy. Eat well. Get plenty of vitamin D. Keep your body moving. 04.01.2022 This is a great image showing how your abdominals and hamstrings act like two pulleys, pulling in the opposite direction, to spiral your pelvis. This is your pelvic tilt. Start lying on your back, in neutral spine and pelvis. For neutral pelvis, your hip bones and pubic bone should be level, with a slight arch in your lower back, and your ribs broad on the mat. So these muscles or pulleys are also in a neutral position, meaning not stretched and not shortened, somewhere in... between where movement in both directions is possible. Your exhale will assist to shorten your abdominals. So as you let your air out, feel your abdominals shorten and pull your pubic bone towards your ribs. Press through your feet and pull your sit bones up to the back of your knees. In this backwards tilt (posterior tilt), your abdominals and hamstrings are shortening to lengthen your back. The front of your hips will also be lengthened. Breath in, and let your sit bones anchor, lengthening your hamstrings again, and let your inhalation open your belly moving your pubic bone away from your ribs, and bringing your pelvis back to neutral. This is the movement that lengthens your lower back and engages your hamstrings for the Bridging exercise, in which we peel our spine off the mat one vertebra at a time. _ See more
