11.01.2022 Pilates for Future You (Article written by Elixr Health Clubs) There are many excellent reasons to take a regular Pilates class. Perhaps one of the most important is how this low-impact, high-return discipline can benefit you now, and in the future. Here are four advantages you can look forward to down the line. 1. Better back health... A recent study revealed that approximately 3.7 million Australians (that’s 16% of the total population) suffer from back problems. The good news is that doing Pilates regularly goes a long way towards helping to alleviate backache. How? By strengthening your core muscles, which support and protect the spinal column. The even better news is that stronger core muscles mean you’re also less likely to suffer with back issues as you grow older and that’s key because according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, individuals aged 6579 are the ones most affected by back problems. 2. Increased bone density Bone loss occurs when more bone is resorbed than is formed by the body. Peak bone mass (or bone density) is reached around age 30. After age 30, bone resorption slowly begins to exceed new bone formation. This leads to bone loss. Bone loss can lead to low bone density (osteopenia), weakness of the bone, and eventually osteoporosis. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation, 2.2 million Australians are affected by osteoporosis. But there’s no need to panic just yet, because resistance training (and that’s where Pilates comes in) helps to increase bone density, as well as build muscle and overall strength, which give added support to the bones. 3. Improved posture Good posture means better balance and better balance is vital as you grow older. Here’s why: Falls are the leading external cause (77%) of unintentional injury in Australians over the age of 65. By strengthening your core muscles, Pilates helps to improve your posture, which in turn ensures that you’re more stable and therefore less likely to sustain an injury or break as a result of a fall. 4. and flexibility As you grow older, it becomes more and more important to stay flexible because doing so helps you to prevent injury and makes it easier for you to stay active and independent. Pilates is a wonderful way to increase and maintain your flexibility. So come down to Wylie's Baths and try out one of my Pilates classes
