24.01.2022 Allow your posture to be a verb, not a noun. It’s not a thing to be found and kept, it’s constantly in flux. Posture is the practical outcome of how well you balance your body. When the balance is efficient it takes less effort to hold ourselves upright and ensures that our joints are under less stress too #pilatesitc #pilates #movementeducation #posture

23.01.2022 Little and often, over the long haul - Dan John. Meaningful and lasting change takes time. As teachers, we can give our clients a Pilates program but do they have the skills outside of your direct guidance in the studio to embody the holistic health lifestyle that defines the Pilates Method? ... Have you ever stopped to reflect whether along with repertoire instruction this is something youre teaching them too? Awareness, recognition, goal setting, accountability, commitment and self reflection are life skills we get to develop as part of regular Pilates practise. These skills are not just applied directly to movement either. They help clients assess and question the stressors within their lifestyle and make decisions about what they truly value in relation to their health. It helps us recommend other trusted professionals to join the circle of care for optimizing health too. Set small but manageable goals for in and out of the studio. Chip away and be sure that the steps along the way are do-able in amongst the pressures of every day real life. Teach the whole method, consider the whole person and their whole lifestyle at all times and BOOM, were on our way to reaching our potential #pilatesitc #pilatesmethod #movementeducation

22.01.2022 Our optimum function from the very deepest cellular level outwards relies on stuff being able to slide where it wants/needs to. Our bones need to be able to mobilise and interlock the way they are designed to without interference. Our organs, fascia, muscles and tissues need to fluidly glide without friction or adhesion. Moving in multidirectional and highly varied ways (oh hey there Pilates!) is key to keeping the sticky fuzz of immobility away. ... Aim higher than flexibility of trendy muscles, aim for whole body glide #pilatesitc #movementeducation #pilates #glide

21.01.2022 Teaching with flow should include delicious pauses. These arent times where you stop and gas bag about what youre all bingeing on Netflix (although do tell) but instead are moments of chosen active stillness. Active stillness as a concept may seem to be an oxymoron but just because theres no movement to the outward eye, doesnt mean there isnt a whole lot of internal good stuff happening. ... Think isometric pause during exercise set up while you climb deeper into your alignment, maybe its in the middle of an exercise before you start a new variation, maybe its on your way to the next exercise. Wherever those pauses are, change it up and choose them strategically (avoid rest pose overuse syndrome!). Flow is dynamic which means that it varies in pace and quality and this variability is the spicy sauce that keeps the body guessing, retains the focus within the session and allows people to stay present in every moment #pilatesitc #flow #pilates #movementeducation

21.01.2022 The idea of functional exercise is popular at present and something that we Pilates teachers would consider to be well built into the method we teach. The label functional exercise refers to some level of purposefully selected simulation between activities of daily living and movement skills being practised in a controlled environment. E.g, a squat might be considered a functional exercise as it resembles a form required to sit in and out of a chair. The idea is tha...t by replicating these fundamental motor skills, there will be a level of permanent transference of these skills. That they will be able to be called upon subconsciously and in real time when needed as we cruise through life. In reality this is a pretty hefty presumption. If we practise A, because its pretty similar to B, Ill definitely be able to do B as a new permanent skill. But does it really work that way? The answer is not always. Its a heck of a lot more complex than that and it pays as a movement practitioner to constantly reflect on your strategy here for the very best end game for your clients. Motor learning is a relatively permanent acquisition of new skills for better efficiency. This is the unicorn were aiming for when helping our clients. Were also built to respond and be adaptive to unexpected threats. When we experience these disruptors, were incredibly smart at creating temporary gains in performance to work around these as a transient form of motor learning. These motor adaptations use an error driven learning pattern to inform future attempts at the same skills. Motor performance on the other hand is our ability to perform a skill or task ad hoc and in the moment. The super slap bang Pilates example of these concepts might be as follows. Just because you did Climb a Tree (super awesome Pilates exercise) last Tuesday (motor performance), doesnt mean youre now able to Climb a Tree permanantly whenever you want (motor learning) and its going to take a lot of varied repetition, practise and analysis (ugly but effective Pilates/motor adaptation) to master for the long haul. Timing, repetition, coordination and feedback = motor learning. Maybe. #pilatesitc #mastery #practice See more

21.01.2022 Ankle and hip ROM are related to one another and will greatly impact how you leverage load in an exercise like the flat back on the high barrel. Its super important to maximize correct ankle dorsiflexion here rather than just hooking the toes and hanging weight from there. The ankle dorsiflexion will ensure you have the grounding from your strong pelvis and legs that allow you to pivot your trunk at the hip joint and keep the alignment between your ribs and hips the same t...hroughout. To help find your ankle range, feel the tibia soften downwards toward the back of the shin and the fibula glide downhill toward the outer heel. Then draw the whole foot back toward your shin and the reach of your heel into the ladder. Yum. Try it out and feel the difference some ankle and foot love can give you #pilatesitc #movementeducation #glide #pilates

20.01.2022 Awesome quote about the brain’s negativity bias from @rickhansonmd The negativity bias is a real and scientifically proven thing. It’s an asymmetry between the processing of negative and positive emotions and events in our world. Our brain will tend to produce faster and more heightened outputs to negative stimuli Even when we experience loads of good stuff in a day, we will tend to fixate on the one bad or negative thing that happened to us ... We’ve all been there right? Stuck in that negative thought spiral. How about when you ask someone that seemingly innocent question, ‘how was your day?’ only to receive a barrage of negative nelly account of events It pays to remember that we’re literally hard wired this way. We hear you asking, what possible benefit could the negativity bias provide us? It’s evolutionary. Back in the day when predators and immediate danger threatened our daily survival, it was helpful for us to learn from and therefore avoid the painful stimuli before all others So how do we work with this knowledge for ourselves and our clients. Remember that what clients tell us is important to their brain Respect, hold space and allow them to experience the negative feelings first before encouraging a mindful and conscious decision to focus toward positive thoughts only. It’s a practise to do this because we’re working against a built in protection mechanism We are passionate about a holistic all systems approach to the Pilates Method where we get to know the body on more than just a musculoskeletal level Full body, all the time = game changing results #pilatesitc #movementeducation #pilates #thebrain See more

15.01.2022 . represent . Our Graduates are deep-thinking, hard-working, consummate professionals who are going to change this industry (and the world!) for the better. Love this from Grad-owned @solstudiofitness Let’s talk representation! A topic that seems to have slipped off our radars a little & one that makes some people feel uncomfortable. ... As companies and businesses are forced to look inward at the way they support and represent members of society, I’m interested to see how the fitness + health and well-being industries are stepping up. As a school teacher, we often talk about ensuring our classrooms are a place where each child is able to see them self represented: in the things that we learn, the literature we read and the work we display. This representation encourages feelings of being and belonging and empowers children to know they’re valued regardless of their exterior. At a time when we are actively looking at the equal representation of race in society, I also question the representation of different cultures, religions, ages, weights, sexual orientation & the representation of those with an impairment, illness or disability. @girlfriend and @boody are two brands that come to mind that show beautiful diversity in all of their campaigns. @bethanycmeyers & @breeelenehan are two others I love, doing great things in this space! I’d love to know if there’s someone in the industry you follow who does the same?

13.01.2022 We just had to share this awesome post from our student and grad @aniko.pilates about her journey teaching and living the Pilates lifestyle with type 1 diabetes. What a total legend # Repost @aniko.pilates TLDR: Pilates changed my life. Amen. I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2014 at the age of 27. It was a massive shock and up until 2019 it took a toll on my mental health. ... It wasn’t until I visited a T1D counsellor in 2019 that I finally felt capable of not letting my diabetes control me and my life. I also started focusing more on my Pilates practice, realising it was the only form of exercise that didn’t send my blood glucose levels on a rollercoaster ride - unlike going for a run or a HIIT session. When I was diagnosed my doctor told me the mental load would be so much harder than the physical impact of dealing with diabetes. Knowing what I know now, this was a total understatement Yes, Pilates has made me physically stronger but more importantly it has been THE best thing for my mental health... I can now exercise without stress. If I have a hypo during practice I treat it with some lollies, wait a few minutes and then rejoin the class. If I have a hypo before class I treat it, knowing the session ahead will clear my mind and help balance my BGL. And if I’m having a hypo while I’m teaching, I just take a seat on my mat and continue to instruct while I eat a few lollies. Every diabetic is different and you need to find what works for you but I’m so incredibly thankful that I finally found my thing #anikopilates #pilates #type1diabetes #t1diabeteslookslikeme #matpilates #pilatesteacher #pilatescommunity #pilateslife #ladystartup #perthpilates #pilateswa #phwib #pilatesitc #pilatesforeverybody #perthfitfam #movement #loveperthhills #pilateshuman

10.01.2022 Listen to their story and teach the person not the body. Anatomy isnt even close to the full picture. 09.01.2022 The stride of one leg forward of the other when walking/running rotates the pelvis. To balance out this twist of body mass, the arms swing to counter rotate your upper trunk. We spiral in order to go forward with as little energy lost to lateral deviation as possible. The big striders are reciprocally the big swingers. The shufflers usually have less arm movement. There is an enormous buffet of swinging action to observe out there and it will give you so much information to... work with. Gait is a whole body situation, literally head to toe. Many clients will come to you with symptoms of imbalalance in their gait system (think shin splints, osteitis pubis, plantar fasciitis, patellofemoral pain yada yada...) and the first reminder in your approach is to look at the whole body. Where is there dynamic leakage of efficiency going on? Hint: Its often not where the pain surfaces. Put away your magnifying glass and instead of chasing symptoms, assess and program for the bigger picture. It sounds like overwhelming work learning to read the body in this way as a Pilates practitioner, right?! Its the art form of the Method and the reward for taking the time to immerse yourself fully within it is huge. Were here for you in this lifes work and its the difference we pride ourselves in too #pilatesitc #movementeducation #welovepilates

07.01.2022 Corona has forced us (with lightning pace and searing brutality!) into a new reality, a virtual one, in the Pilates industry scene. While nothing replaces the connection of a face to face Pilates experience, for many a virtual option is the preferred or only option due to health, distance, finances and more. Even once the world is able to fully open its arms again, the digital Pilates practise is here to stay so its time to buckle up and embrace it. 1. Slow down and... breathe. Err on the side of talking and teaching a wee bit slower than usual. If you cue an inhale, pause and wait for them to inhale before the next instruction. The rising stress both you and your clients will feel if you dont account for the inevitable slight tech delays will kill your mood. 2. De-clutter. The principles of Pilates centre around concentration, precision, focus, mental clarity, commitment and flow yada yada. Its not just what and how youre teaching that evokes this for your clients but also where. Remove all distractions from within your teaching frame. AKA pile up your crap anywhere except within the confines of your lens space. Your laundry pile does not maketh for cute Hundred motivation. This also goes for what youre wearing then you teach. Can your clients clearly see your demonstrations? Are you presenting yourself like the health professional you are?Resist the urge to don your yeti-esque home attire and curate yourself ready to be an example for your participants. 3. Marie Kondo yo self. "Discard everything that does not spark joy". Its hard enough motivating your clients to move with you via a screen medium so it better be joyful if youre going to captivate them. If youre enjoying it, theyre enjoying it so prepare carefully in advance what youll teach and edit all the unhappy vibes away. 4. Get off your mat. In a live virtual session, youll need to ensure that you approach the screen, watch them move and offer teaching advice. Set em up, then get up. If youd like us to release more of these virtual teaching tips, tag in your fellow teacher friends and comment below. Go forth and conquer virtual Pilates land! #pilatesitc #pilates #movementeducation See more

06.01.2022 Pain is a powerful and necessary protective messenger asking us to make a change. Pain does not equal tissue damage and it doesn’t tell us what or where a problem lies. Pain isn’t showing us failure, it’s asking us for awareness. ... How we interpret those signals becomes our choice. We’re passionate about sharing and teaching modern and current Pilates rehabilitation applications within our Diploma and Studio Pilates pathways. Come and play with us to stretch your mind #pilatesitc #movementeducation https://www.pilatesitc.edu.au/

06.01.2022 The pharma world has normalised the notion that inflammation is something we should seek to calm as soon as possible, but is this actually a logical strategy? We injure ourselves or become unwell and immediately were accustomed to applying ice and other anti inflammatory measures. The latest research says that its time to rethink the old RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) approach. We need inflammation! ... Its an intelligently coordinated protective cascade that our body signals to fend off pathogens, infection or mend tissue damage. If we intervene before the important work of the inflammatory pathways are done then we risk prolonging or impeding the healing process to negative effect. What improves tissue healing best of all? Blood flow. What improves blood flow? Movement. Effective rehabilitation after injury is all about movement timing and strategy. Its about working alongside the bodys natural healing ability. The Pilates approach to rehab is deeply rooted in this ideal of respecting the body and the individual. We assist rather than intervene and its what makes what we do so uniquely connected and rewarding #pilatesitc #heal #pilates #movementeducation

05.01.2022 The reason why this is working, is you weren’t doing it before. The essence of results is simple really, it’s newness! Then doing the new thing over and over and with increasing load and complexity according to tolerance. Moving a joint/s that was previously under nourished by movement promotes lasting change right down to cellular level and therefore benefits all body systems like a delicious ripple effect. ... Helping our clients experience and establish new movement strategies is what we Pilates teachers live for. It’s the juicy fruit that brings those life changing results. Novel movement most often does start simple. This clip of our Educator @alisha.j.porter at her studio @senseofpowerpilates is the perfect example. The assisted Roll Back is an awesome way to practise the skill of rolling from lying to sitting or parts in between by coordinating the pivot at the hip joints with the peel of the spine. 05.01.2022 ‘Mastery is in the reaching, not the arriving’ - Sarah Lewis Frances (oh hi that’s me! ) practising the ‘Go Fishing’ exercise on the Reformer here. Watching back there’s some bits I’d definitely like to improve on like more hip abduction as knees are falling in a bit, slowing it down a little, getting more upward rotation on the left shoulder blade as I twist right so I can get more rotation range that way but overall I think I’m doing a great job! ... I’ve got the strap around my ankles so I can find my max ankle dorsiflexion, I’m pivoting at the hip joint and I’m able to hold my trunk alignment as I reach my arm out. Go me! There’s no such thing as perfect mastery, only improvement within yourself and your internal dialogue matters. Back yourself as you practise and you’ll love every second A big weekend of Pilates ITC student Pilates magic happening all over the country. You’re all superstars! #pilatesitc #yougotthis #pilates #practise

04.01.2022 Bang on wisdom from John Wooden. Let’s talk rehab Pilates applications, a topic near and dear to us. The concept of rehab centers around restoration of prior function. Is it your advice slash exercise prescription slash teaching that is going to heal your client? ... NO! Your client will heal themselves Their body actually already knows way better than you do what it needs to get back to former glory, it just needs all the tools it requires to get there Our role as teachers is to remove interferences so that it can get on it’s merry way as quickly as possible We don’t fix and we don’t cure. We weed out the dead wood and help with priming that environment with encouragement and an open mind Identifying the barriers to intelligent whole body health and restoration can take confidence and practice but we’re here for it. It’s our jam Our 2021 courses are open for enrolment now and already filling fast. 04.01.2022 Get the ingredients for your Pilates class warm up just right and you’re setting the tone for a truly effective and memorable experience for your clients. Firstly you’ve got to know what you’re trying to achieve with your warm up. So why warm up? Yes it’s about raising body temperature, moving through varied ranges of motion and adequately preparing the body for the workout ahead but it’s so much more than this too.... It’s a mood setter, a chance for mental reset and a class bonding opportunity. Life is a crazy ride these days and your clients may be crawling in to see you from an incredibly stressful week or be riding high after a day of wins. We’ve got to be ready to meet each individual energetically where they’re at. As a teacher it’s important to plan and cue for how you will actively facilitate an environment for emotional readiness to get the best out of the coming movement experience. So HOW do we do all this? Start with the Pilates fundamentals but don’t overcue, let them find their groove. Movement is top priority, not a lecture on biomechanics. Address each client by name at some point. This tells them ‘I see you and you’re important’ and tells other clients ‘meet your new Pilates friends for the next hour’. Facilitate that attitude uplift right from the start. Cue movement nuts and bolts yes but also encourage them to dive into the focus of the movement experience to shake off the daily grind they came from. Share any central theme or ideas that you have centered your class around to create buzz, excitement and potential group banter. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Notice that your clients are all mentally drained and in need of a quick nervous system shift? Maybe start with a full body shake out! Notice the need for personal connectedness? Maybe throw the small mini ball between clients for a fun mental warm up first! Power house Pilates teaching is so much more than exercise selection and application. This plus all that secret sauce in between is why our courses truly prepare you to teach and communicate at the highest level. Join us and start your studies any time and from anywhere #pilatesitc #movementeducation #pilates https://www.pilatesitc.edu.au/

03.01.2022 . connect . Your customer doesn’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Damon Richards. The Initial Consultation (IC) is a mutually beneficial exercise for client and Instructor. ... [The IC is a private session where the Instructor assesses, collects and make sense of information about the client - and everyone gets to know eachother.] Pilates ITC regards the IC as a fundamental tenet of a professional Studio Pilates operation. We cannot stress this enough: it doesn’t matter how experienced/athletic/capable/smart a client says they are, never skip the IC. You don’t know what you don’t know: the IC will equip you with everything you need to build a successful working relationship with your client. 03.01.2022 Movement training is all about our ability and resiliency to react, adapt and cope with different environments and situations. The most effective results are a constant and strategic interplay of variance, volume and technique. VARIANCE: We need to experience all the different ROMs available to our joints and in lots of different and interesting combos. Hellooooo Pilates!... VOLUME & TECHNIQUE: In any given workout, is it better to get through 5 exercises done with exacting perfection (hint: not a real thing), 20 exercises that are focussed but still have some progress left or 70 exercises with zero attention to form? Aim for good volume (see variance) but make sure youre also concentrating on technique. Look outside the body by looking around it too. All of it matters. Our last course intakes for 2020 are open for enrolment now but are closing soon as were almost full!
