25.01.2022 Hi friends, we're open again for the season and looking forward to hosting you. You may not know that the PH hostel is run as a non-profit association. This is one reason we can keep our costs very low. But it also means, we're legally required to let you know about our AGM coming up: 7:30pm, 17 Sep 2020 at Pilgrim Hill. We’ll be doing the ordinary business of the AGM. Anyone planning to attend needs to RSVP for COVID compliance. Fun stuff eh? Now you know.

21.01.2022 Tasmanians love our wombats. We often suggest guests visit Cradle Mountain, about the distance from Pilgrim Hill as your average LA commute.

20.01.2022 Rainbow harvest tonight from the hostel veggie garden. At Pilgrim Hill Hostel we share meals every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Come and join the conversation!

20.01.2022 We’ve started a little blog to help travellers enjoy the Huon Valley. Each week we will share something to help our guests plan their stay, written in simple English for working holiday travellers. But you’re welcome to read the blog whoever you are. We hope you find it helpful! If so, leave a comment...

20.01.2022 Just a few minutes from lots of working orchards, soak in the wild beauty of the Tasmanian native forest at our hill top hostel. A place to rest, explore, or go adventuring.

19.01.2022 Very glad to hear that the backpacker tax, where foreign workers are charged more tax than Australians doing the same jobs, has been found to be in breach of numerous international treaties. This is good news for our working holiday visitors, who contribute so much to our economies.

19.01.2022 New Season...and wonderful. Join us.

18.01.2022 Merry Christmas from Pilgrim Hill! Our guests often take a hike on this beautiful mountain with views of Hobart and the sea.

18.01.2022 It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas? Experience the adventure of Tasmanian weather.

17.01.2022 From next week, seasonal workers can enter Tasmania! We are very ready to welcome travellers again!

16.01.2022 What’s blooming on Pilgrim Hill? Native clematis aristata in the forest and (non native) artichokes in the veggie garden.

14.01.2022 On Pilgrim Hill we love celebrations! Whether it’s Thanksgiving, like this week (joined by a Canadian guest), the M/W/Fri meals with our travelers, or a movie/games night, we enjoy sharing the life God has blessed us with.

14.01.2022 Good morning, world! Sunrise from Mount Wellington, looking down over Hobart. Pilgrim Hill is on the edge of the Wellington Ranges.

14.01.2022 We’ve been seeing a couple of Bettongs on the Hill lately. You’ll only find the bettong in the eastern part of Tasmania as they prefer dry, open eucalypt forests and grassy woodlands. They are nocturnal animals, spending daylight hours in a domed, camouflaged nest of grass. The easiest way to describe a bettong is as a ‘small kangaroo’. They have the distinctive hind limbs, perfect for hopping, and short forelimbs.... They are coloured light brown-grey on top and have white or light bellies. The tail of the bettong is as long as the head and body! The tail is usually for balance (much like the kangaroo), but is somewhat capable of gripping items - if they’re very light! They also use their little tails to carry nesting material. (None of the photos are mine. We’ve only seen them jumping past the front of the car as we drive at night! Thanks, Google.)

13.01.2022 Have you been keeping up with Peirce’s blog? Great info for travelers.

12.01.2022 We now have a nice, new listing on the Huon Valley Council’s website. Having a look and sharing may give search engines a nudge.

10.01.2022 Yay! Some great news towards ENDING the backpacker tax. A small victory, but a good one. Here's hoping for more! https://www.theguardian.com//backpacker-tax-a-form-of-disc

08.01.2022 State-of-the-art mountain biking statewide. Tasmania.

07.01.2022 Let’s take a walk.

07.01.2022 It’s going viral! A friend of ours made this video on Pilgrim Hill.

07.01.2022 Peirce is giving out tips for seasonal workers and backpackers each week on our simple English blog for travellers in the Huon Valley.

07.01.2022 We always recommend a trip to Bruny Island to our travellers. It’s as magical as this photo capturing two wallabies sharing baby care.

04.01.2022 Our wonderful Wedge-tailed Eagles are one of 24 diurnal (day-active) raptor species in Australia. Like other birds of prey, they have a hooked bill and large talons. They can weigh 4kg (almost 9 lb), measure 1m (3.28 ft) from head to tail-tip and have a wingspan of up to 2.3m (7.55 feet!). We love watching them soar. Good friend James Stone took this amazing shot.

03.01.2022 These spring rains have washed so much seaweed onto the beach. We went seaweed gathering and put it on the tomato patch! It makes an amazing organic fertiliser and mulch. And if you are wondering, yes, it’s totally legal in Tasmania, so get gathering. You can even cook with it.

03.01.2022 One of our many peaceful spots to relax on a lovely spring or summer evening after work; just a glimpse of the stunning view through the trees. Pilgrim Hill is the best/loveliest/safest place in the Huon for the current (from 20 Sept) 2-week work/accommodation self-quarantine. Only 12 guests, on-site bushwalks, stunning views, veggie garden, gentle sports facilities (volleyball, badminton, croquet...). Shuttle transportation, grocery delivery if needed.
