23.01.2022 Another week has flown by and work on the K’T’inga continues. This week has been all about the painting. Getting the complex patterns on the upper and lower main hull has been time consuming to say the least. There are three main colours that I used and there is still a little more masking to do as the top needs some additional details painting. The ship looks a bit glossy now, that is because I have coated it in clear to both protect the pant work and to allow the decals to ...be applied. It will all get a blending coat and a Matt top coat once that weathering has been done. The next major hurdle is to come up with the electronics for it. I hope to have it relatively basic, just on/off for the main lights and strobes and the firing of the front and rear torpedoes. That bit poses the most issues. Still not too sure how I am going to do it, weather to have some LEDs ramp up and a second set then flash to simulate the intense burst or to have some optic fibre in there as well to look as if the tube is rotating as the light intensity builds. Will test both ideas over the next week and will make a decision then. See more

21.01.2022 Been busy working on the K’T’inga and its finely finished, well almost. Have designed up a lighting control board for it and now waiting for it to come back from the manufactures, so that will take a few weeks. In the meantime, something big arrived. Any guesses as to what it is? A clue, been working on its small cousin for 18 months.

18.01.2022 It’s been a little while now since my last post, I think I am finally getting over the disaster that was the Reliant. Oh well we learn and move on. So the next project is the 1/350 K’T’inga Klingon Battle cruiser, from Star Trek the Motion Picture. Truly, a spectacular ship, this one is all about the painting. While I do have the optional lighting kit I will not be using it as it is just too basic. I will build a small custom lighting kit for it, nothing-really special, just something to switch the lights on and fire those impressive torpedoes. Stage one is the cobra head and its coming along quite nicely.

09.01.2022 Another Lighting test, this time of the chiller grill for the Reliant

07.01.2022 There has not been a lot of progress on the K’T’inga model this week, but the torpedoes have been sorted. Took some time designing and redesigning the torpedo tubes to best fit what I think gives realistic firing sequence. In the Movie, the Firing sequence is in two stages, the throat of the tube ramps up to full red and when the firing order is given, a glow starts from the depths and travels up the tube and bursts forth. What I have done is to replicate this to some extent.... There will be a background LED that will provide the glowing ramp up and a series of Digital LEDs will provide the orange glow traveling along the tube culminating with the bright flash at the end. Once all this is done then the tube ramps down again. The digital LEDs make it a little more expensive to make but give a very interesting effect and you can control what colour each individual LED will be. See more

06.01.2022 Power on testing of the lighting effect on the Chiller Grill for the Reliant studio scale model. Note there is no clear parts attached yet, only the fiber fill to blend the hot spots.
