When Carmela was only 14 when she was exploited for profit by those who were meant to protect her. Her mother sold Carmela and her sister to a paedophile. ... Plan International runs an anti-trafficking project where Carmela lives in the Philippines. Working with local authorities, we organised Carmela and her sisters’ rescue. Now, 10 years later, Carmela has followed her dream of studying social work at university and now works for a government body in the Philippines who help implement the country’s anti-trafficking laws. Carmela is helping children learn about their rights, safeguard girls from abuse and exploitation at the hands of traffickers, and implement laws that target trafficking rings. 09.01.2022 "There is a gender disparity when we look at how COVID-19 has impacted education, not only while the pandemic is ongoing but also once it is over and many children start returning to school. Several girls might be held back for these reasons and will not be able to return to school.

07.01.2022 Plan International is closely monitoring and responding to the deteriorating situation in South Sudan, where approximately 60% of the population are likely to face acute hunger this year. We’re working with communities in Pibor County to deliver food and treatment for malnutrition, alongside child-protection services and education programs. It is a heart-breaking situation unfolding in South Sudan and we fear we will see even worse suffering if the humanitarian response isn’t urgently scaled up. 06.01.2022 Graceianne, 21, is from Arawa in Papua New Guinea. After attending Plan International’s Rise Up! training, Graceianne learnt about her rights and the importance of gender equality. The program offers training, mentoring and practical leadership experiences for young women. It also provides the opportunity for discussion of social issues affecting young women in their community. "The Rise Up training is the only training I’ve attended where I learnt about gender and human righ...ts, family planning and culture, traditions and other things. "I learnt public speaking. At first I had never spoken openly in front of people. After the public speaking lesson it had helped me to express myself openly in the front of others, I also learnt about human rights, and what are my rights are." The theme this year is ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’, acknowledging that sovereignty has never been ceded; and recognising the First Peoples’ connection to Country, their ancient wisdom about climate change and land management and their early innovations and art. Plan International Australia acknowledges the peoples of the Kulin Nation as the Traditional Owners of the Land on which our office stands. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ ongoing connection to land, waters and community and believe our nation has a lot to learn from First Australians’ approaches to caring for Country and for each other. We stand in solidarity with the Uluru Statement from the Heart and support its call to enshrine a First Nations voice in the Australian constitution and establish a Makarrata Commission.
