24.01.2022 Just because 2020 hasn't been giving enough... The Point Lonsdale Medical Group is reminding us all to take precautions against the Bairnsdale (Buruli) Ulcer, ...after a recent spike in cases. The centre has seen around half a dozen new cases in recent months.... For those not aware, the ulcer initially presents like a small insect bite, but if left too long can have nasty consequences, potentially requiring surgery. Mosquitoes and possums are thought to be involved in transmission. If you're in the garden, remember to wear gardening gloves long sleeves, long pants, mozzie repellent, don't leave stagnant water lying around... AND if you notice a strange sore that doesn't seem to be healing, get it checked! See more

12.01.2022 As part of National Volunteer Week, today we take a look at our Nipper Education Program. Across the summer season, we had 12,000+ junior activity members parti...cipating in safe, fun and organised activities in a beach environment; preparing Nippers to be future lifesavers. These programs could not run without the dedicated age managers, junior coordinators, water safety personnel and parent helpers. All of these roles ensure Nippers are provided with an amazing experience with their friends and families on and off the beach. Thank you for all the work over the last year. #NVW2020

11.01.2022 It's National Volunteer Week, and our volunteers are some of the most dedicated in the country. To those who help protect the visitors at our patrolled location...s, to those who provide first aid to those in need and to those in marine rescue services, thank you. During the 2019/20 season our volunteers rescued 299 people, provided 1,111 first aids and helped protect over 1.2 million visitors to our beaches. To do this, our operational volunteers completed 185,000+ hours of voluntarily patrolling and water safety across a range of services. This is the equivalent of 7,708 days or 825 return trips to the moon! All provided in a pretty unusual season, with massive bushfires, air quality issues and the pandemic. Thank you for all the work you do in helping those in their time of need! #NVW2020

09.01.2022 This week has been National Volunteer Week a celebration of all the wonderful volunteers around Australia. Surf Life Saving is Australias largest volunteer movement with over 176,000 members how lucky we are to be able to play a part in this extraordinary cause! It never ceases to amaze me how much our club does through the efforts of our volunteers. So I would like to take this time to say thank you. Thank you to our volunteer life savers who this year performed over 4,...500 volunteer patrol hours, performed 7 rescues Thank you to all the instructors, water safety, parents and helpers who help make our nippers program so fantastic. Thank you to all our trainers and assessors who teach members how to understand the beach and apply the best quality training to keep the community safe on our beaches. Thank you to any member who does anything to further our cause including cooking BBQs, selling raffle tickets or setting up marquees. Finally thank you to all our members who currently or have previously sat on our committees, sub-committees and working groups. The broad level of backgrounds, experience and interests help to make our club great. It goes without saying we also acknowledge and thank volunteers throughout the wider community who help out with so many different causes. What better time to think about volunteering in our club in future than National Volunteer Week. If you believe you have any skills or expertise you could give to our club, I would like to encourage you to put your hand up! Remember you dont need to know much at all about surf life saving to help us put together the plan for our new bar, assist with our finances or design some content for our social media. 06.01.2022 As part of National Volunteer Week, today we are taking the time to say thank you to those involved in Aquatic Sports (Active Training). Across the whole calend...ar year, we engage a large number of volunteers in roles including officiating, coaching, team managing, water safety and powercraft, administration, and of course junior, youth, senior and masters athletes. Across the many lifesaving competition disciplines including: Pool, Surf, Beach, First Aid & Patrol, R&R, IRB and Surf Boats, lifesaving sport tests a lifesavers skills in rescue, accident prevention and emergency care. By building and maintaining these skills through sport, we know our lifesavers and future lifesavers are rescue ready! Thank you to all our volunteers for their wonderful passion and commitment to lifesaving sport both in Victoria, and on the interstate and international stages. #NVW2020

To help recognise ...this and the outstanding contribution of our volunteers, we will be sharing a post a day to highlight the voluntary work completed within the lifesaving community. For the first day of National Volunteer Week, wed like to acknowledge the Club Committees of Management members, who are key to an organisations operations and ensure their members can enjoy the wonderful programs. Within Victorias 57 life saving clubs, there are 500+ leadership personnel who fill roles like president, secretary, treasurers, club captains, gear officers, chief instructors, team managers, junior coordinators, member protection officers and many more. Without these dedicated individuals our members would not enjoy the fantastic experiences each and every day. LSV and other Melbourne based clubs have plenty of times for members to attend these sessions and ensure that everyone is qualified ahead of the upcoming season. This task relies on the combined work of all our volun...teer trainers, assessors and facilitators from across the state who help to educate, train, re-qualify and up-skill our members. This season, we have seen 5,047 new awards and 9,731 updated, which would not be possible without this dedication. During National Volunteer Week, we want to recognise all the work completed by these individuals and others who operate behind the scene, to ensure our members have the skills and knowledge for their essential work within our community. 02.01.2022 We are thrilled that our re-launched Nippers in Schools program has been nominated for Life Saving Victorias Awards of Excellence! This year, the program was aimed at training parents at Point Lonsdale Primary School to run the program. We ran an Adult Bronze camp for a group of local parents and are planning on running another once COVID restrictions ease. We also ran a great event at Pojnt Lonsdale Primary School featuring Maxi from Bondi Rescue. This initiative is in lin...e with our goal of opening up our club to locally-based families and increasing community engagement in our new clubhouse and community hub! Thank you to all the parents, nippers and other helpers who made this program so great!
