How can I detect any changes early?... A six monthly check by your podiatrist will help to detect any changes early before they become a problem. Your podiatrist will examine your circulation by feeling foot pulses. They will also examine sensation by testing reflexes, vibration and pressure sensitivity, and other tests may be conducted as necessary. 08.01.2022 Dry cracked heels are a common foot dilemma that can often lead to tenderness and become a source of discomfit. If left untreated, the cracks will develop into deep fissures (which can be painful and an easy way to get an infection). How do they form? Cracking/splitting around the heel region occurs when the skin becomes calloused (thick skin) and dry, causing the skin to lose its natural elasticity. Increased pressure (weight gain and pregnancy) causes the fat pad to spread ...out thin, increasing pressure at the sides of the heel forming the splitting/cracking. Anyone is susceptible to dry cracked heels although certain populations and medical conditions influence its presentation: Diabetes Psoriasis Dermatitis Increased BMI Prolonged standing on hard surface Improper footwear How can we help you ask? By preventing them! Or maintaining your heels if thats where youre at. As podiatrists we can assist in the late chronic stages just as much as the early preventative phase. Treatment involves: Debridement safely removing callus with sterile equipment to allow the skin to restore its natural elasticity Topical ointments depending on severity, podiatrists can prescribe stronger urea-based moisturising agents or keratolytics to reduce callus severity Footwear/insoles If there is a biomechanical component to your cracking heels, we can assess and treat that too! So try and modify some of those aforementioned causative factors yourself, and if your still struggling to get it sorted then come on in and we can sort it out for you!
