25.01.2022 A lateral ankle sprain is an umbrella term for an injury to the foot which is the most common injury amongst athletes aside from non-specific bruising. The injury occurs when the foot is in an inverted and plantarflexed position - placing pressure upon both the dorsal and lateral structures of the foot.

23.01.2022 [Home Exercise] At a time where the sporting community is being told to maintain social distance our structured exercise and accidental exercise tends to reduce significantly. Because of this factor, when you do return to activity or spontaneously increase your activity in a single session your risk of injury considerably increases. For that reason, we thought it important to show you some exercises you can do from home!

22.01.2022 [Modify Load] In the current climate of social distancing, the ability to control how much activity you are completing on your feet is much easier than it has been previously. That being said, ensuring that appropriate footwear is worn when inside so you are not walking barefoot on hard surfaces is important to monitor when injured.

22.01.2022 [Orthoses Intervention] Plantar heel pain is a condition that has strong evidence supporting the use of orthosis intervention. The use of an orthoses device and the prescription process should always be individually decided upon. However, although the prescription may be different for individuals the goals are often similar: - Decrease force around the heel - Increase force in the arch to shorten the plantar fascia - Improve 1st toe function during activity

22.01.2022 [Roles of the ankle] When looking at rehabbing a laterally sprained ankle it is important to look at what roles the ankle and foot play in daily life, exercise and competition. One of those roles is around balance and stability and therefore including exercises which challenge our proprioception is important. Decreased stability increases the risk of fatigue and in turn increases the risk of further injury.

20.01.2022 [Standing Lower Leg Strength] Building strength in a while standing is super important as in many cases this is the position we are in when exerting force. There are many variables of how to complete these exercises show us how you do your in the comments!!

19.01.2022 [Controlled Load] The development of strength around the surrounding tissues of the heel is important for a number of reasons. 1. To improve your ability to cope with the load through the foot. 2. To help de-threaten actions or moments which may produce pain. 3. Reduce overall load placed through the foot and ankle.

19.01.2022 [Shockwave] Extracorporeal shockwave treatment is a relatively new process that has been shown to have very positive results with regards to improving patient symptoms. The process involves using audio waves to re-injure the tissues in a controlled way to restart the healing process. This is important, as stated in our first post on heel pain, it is commonly a chronic presentation and may have past its normal healing time of 6-12 weeks by the time a patient present to the clinic this shockwave treatment can speed up the recovery process.

18.01.2022 [Seated Ankle Strength] The progression of these exercises allows for a gradual build in strength. Some people will be more advanced than others in what they can accomplish and pick your appropriate level is important. If you find these seated exercises easy try adding increase weight a bag with books, small children or weight plates.

18.01.2022 [Anatomy of the ankle] There are a number of structures involved when a lateral ankle sprain occurs. Depending on how the injury occurred and the severity of the injury some structures may be more effected than others. Both the Anterior tibio-fibula ligament and the calcaneofibular ligament are two of the most commonly effect structures. However, in many cases tendon, bone and muscle may be affected too including: Peroneus brevis, peroneus longus, syndesmosis base of the 5th metatarsal, cuboid and fibula.

05.01.2022 [Soldiering on] The human body knows how to just keep going! After an ankle sprain people commonly get up, are a little tender and soldier on. Sometimes the issue with this is that habits build in unhealthy ways that can lead to further issues down the track.

04.01.2022 [Heat] In many cases plantar heel pain presents as a chronic condition, it is degenerative and not inflammatory this is important when looking at treating it at home as the use of anti-inflammatory drugs and ice are less indicated for care than heat and paracetamol when aiming to reduce pain and improve symptoms.

02.01.2022 [Balance] Developing balance is often overlooked and a taken for granted skill that we develop when we are children and advance as we grow. However, after acute injury, your balance can be significantly affected and in the presence of chronic injury can be difficult to retrain. Here are an example of exercises you may want to try

02.01.2022 [Building Up] When looking to use strength training after an ankle sprain it is important to include all muscles whose tendon crosses the ankle joint and those that are exclusive to the foot itself. Strength training can begin as soon as pain allows and there is no presence of a fracture.

01.01.2022 Happy Spring Carnival!

01.01.2022 [Again, and Again] After an ankle sprain has occurred or in some cases, after multiple ankle sprains occur - ankle stability can significantly reduce! This is due to multiple factors including; reduced proprioception, strength and changes in anatomical structures. For this reason, the use of an orthoses or shoe padding can be beneficial in the short to medium term to reduce fatigue and allow rehabilitation process to be faster.
