24.01.2022 This is fabulous news for all wildlife in the west of the state. The support that we receive from Zoos Victoria in veterinary care for our injured wildlife is simply incredible now but this announcement brings us confidence that, in one of our largest urban growth corridors in the west, the access for injured wildlife to specialist veterinary services will continue and strengthen. Thank you Zoos Victoria and RSPCA

23.01.2022 IGNORE previous update - swans all fine - my binoculars are not so fine - need to go online tonight an order a new pair! 20.01.2022 So these two little ragamuffins came in about ten days ago. This is proof that you need to be just slightly crazy to do this voluntary work. When they arrived they were only days old and their eyes weren’t even open yet - they were still developing. Their nest had blown to the ground and a kind samaritan had got them to a vet clinic. Because their eyes were still developing it became increasingly obvious that they were responding to my voice for food so in order that they weren’t human word imprinted I have driven the household and neighbours nuts Whoop-whooping to get them to open their wee mouths. They are Red Wattlebird chicks Photo of them on arrival next to a 1 ml syringe in comments below

20.01.2022 There was an appropriate level of expletive language as joints cracked and groaned as we shadeclothed an entire flight aviary this weekend for Mollie - but shes’s worth the fact that I will be unable to lift my arms above my head for the next few days!! Mollie was given the all clear by WORZ to commence flight training but our original plans fell through as the shelter we were going to send Mollie to had some maintenance issues of their own to deal with - such is the life of ...wildlife carers - always something needs fixing or building or tweaking. So instead, due to the amazing response for Mollie we were able to buy the required shadecloth and extend an existing aviary to give Mollie a decent space to build herself back up again. We realised how unflight ready she was when we put her in the aviary - only able to fly very short distance and then not elevate. Birds are just like humans that spend time in hospital - they suffer muscle atrophy as well. It will take a few weeks before Mollie is up and out there again but she can have all the time she needs in her new flight aviary. Thanks so much to everyone for your donations - her appetite has not waned at all Leonie - your logs are simply perfect for Mollies needs - lots of crevices for mice and quail to be hidden See more

19.01.2022 Hi everyone - we normally don’t do lost posts but we’ve had a frantic owner contact us regarding her lost pet tonight. We have advised the owner to notify all the likely vet clinics that may get a pet handed in as well as the Lost Birds of Vic site but if you come across this lovely please contact us and we can put you in touch with the owner. Please share as we’re sure this much loved pet is missing his family as much as they’re missing him - thank you Type of Bird: Ecl...ectus Gender: Male Colour: Green with red under wings Age: 7 months old Lost 30 September 2020 at 6pm behind Whitten Oval Footscray

17.01.2022 The lovely Marnie just contacted us about the swan family in Featherbrook wetlands. They’ve made their first trip by the sounds of things with this clutch across the road to the school. This is perfectly normal swan behaviour taking the kids for a walk to source food - it’s all an exercise and learning activity for the cygnets. If people can just slow down around that vicinity that would be great as the cygnets are apparently ducking under the fence and the parents keep having to call them back - children, hey!! They’ll probably make their way back to the wetland around dusk or thereabouts so if people take care around that area that woukd be really great.

15.01.2022 Put away all glass objects as this little one can really hit the high notes! Happy Sunday everyone This is Nellie Melba - fledgling Willy Wagtail - we think the singing budgie would have been very envious of the notes this little one can hit

13.01.2022 We got a rather disturbing call today from a very concerned resident. Children riding bikes around the Featherbrook Millpond Drive wetlands were seen following the cygnets on their bikes and then picking the cygnets up much to the distress of the parents and the cygnets. Even we don’t handle the cygnets we have in care if we can avoid it as it really stresses them out. The concerned resident told the boys off but they ignored her so she called us. Marcus went up to have a cha...t to the kids about how it is an offence under the Wildlife Act 1975 to catch wildlife protected under the Act - swans and their offspring are protected. The children in question seemed to be receptive to the chat and so we are very hopeful they will not do this again. We are asking all parents to have a chat to their children, who we know are having a pretty tough year (parents and children alike), and let them know that this behaviour is not on. We are asking the community to keep eyes on this wetland and if they see this behaviour occurring again to report it as a wildlife crime to VicPol 131444 and/or DELWP 136186. These poor swan parents have already lost a cygnet through dog attack, the last thing they need is this interference with their surviving youngsters. See more

12.01.2022 Zeus McGoose, Penelope Blossom and introducing Spud Muffin. Spud was found wandering along a busy road with no family within cooee! A kind person stopped and gave Spud a lift to safety and he soon found his way to us. Penelope Blossom is still the smallest cygnet we’ve ever had in care but we’ve had her checked over by the vet team at WORZ and she is in fine health so she’s just always going to be a little swan we think. Still got several months ahead in care as we’ll release them all together but everyone is doing well and as you can see here are best of buddies

12.01.2022 Okie dokie folks - after some steep learning curves into all things PayPal, we now have an account. Hopefully this may make it easier for people, rather than having to ask for bank account details. Thanks so much to Glen for supporting us to get this up and running And huge thanks to all our supporters for helping out with the cost of caring for our precious local wildlife - they very much appreciate you helping us to help them - just one of many is Beaks the lorikeet below https://www.paypal.com/donate?hosted_button_id=YJRDWMYZAGTMU

11.01.2022 CALLOUT TO SANCTUARY LAKES - Marcus and I have been out this afternoon to rescue a juvenile swan with a possible swallowed hook, fishing line wrapped around beak and leg. S/he can fly but is trailing about 3m of line behind her. We got to about 4m from the swan! Please let us know if you see this bird - last seen flying past Heron Way towards Watersedge Cove and golf course. Thanks heap folks

09.01.2022 Spike meet the Point Cook Wildlife Care community. Spike (a White Faced Heron older fledgie ) got himself somewhat lost in a backyard in Seabrook and so his parents hung around for a couple of days but then hadn’t been seen for 24-36 hours. Even when they were around they didn’t come down to feed and so Spike was a little thin. We thought it best he come in - get fed right up and once he’s able to reach those perches and has gained some weight we will get him back out where he belongs.

09.01.2022 Crazy day today - we’ve been quite quiet which has been great and enabled us to have a little down time but today was nuts!! Firstly Shane had a swan in his backyard this morning so shot down before work for swan to WORZ - good news - Henri (just looked like a Henri, can’t explain) just needs a little feeding up and he’ll be on his way on the weekend. Then a call for a possum at the end of the working day - poor little Ringtail who is paper thin and has some battle scars - no...t holding much hope for her unfortunately but she is warm and has eaten a little. Tonight Wildlife Vic rang for some help for an Australasian Grebe who managed to find itself in a backyard and we know that can be a sign that they are quite unwell or have been dropped by a predator. Off to WORZ tomorrow. I do think we have a Gertrude on our hands there. Met the lovely Gary and his mum midway in Deer Park for a service station handover. To top off the evening - cocky with a bad wing injury that couldn’t fly but could climb. The lovely person had a ladder but when we arrived cocky had climbed to the top. A bit of convo with Wildlife Vic and George managed to get onto the Firies from Sunshine Fire Brigade. They were brilliant - couldn’t get a ladder up in the circumstances but did they give up - nup - they decided to use the small fire hose to encourage cocky down. Cocky did get rather wet but at least not out there with an injury anymore. Thanks and much kudos to the Sunshine Fire Brigade - Firey the Cocky is going to WORZ in the morning. See more

08.01.2022 Now just look at who’s found a friend on Christmas Day The little black munchkin is (we think - gosh bit like waiting to open a Christmas present hey) a Buff Banded Rail. I’ve nicked a pic of the interwebs so you can see what this little one will look like if we make it. So far so good - very active and very food oriented - two great signs. Thank goodness the pond he fell into and almost drowned in belong to the lovely Anita who is a nurse and did all the right things - drying, warming and then rehydrating. The little Dusky is also doing really well so hopefully this will be a successfully raised odd couple - maybe Felix and Oscar is appropriate for these two

07.01.2022 UPDATE - Sadly our wee little duckling just couldn’t hild out another night without the family and we lost him or her overnight. Being without mum for over 72 hours was a long time to be stressed and cold and it was all too much - we were so close last night - breaks our hearts. Thank you to everyone keeping a watchful eye out for thr family. The rest of the family are all still together and doing well. Saltwater Coast folks - need your help!! If you see the mumma duck and 10 ducklings in the croc park ponds can you let me know asap - I have an 11th duckling to reunite with the family Haven’t managed to locate her yet and need to sight her in order to reunite. She’s probably bunkered down somewhere out of the wind. Last seen this morning city end of ponds near bridge.

07.01.2022 Magpie Magic act - the case of the disappearing fledgling. We often get calls at this time of year for young fledgling magpies and people are concerned for their welfare. Our advice is always - as long as they are not injured and the parents are feeding they are best left where they are. This was the case in Altona Meadows this afternoon when a kind young man came across a little fledgie and was very concerned about whether it would survive. After a quick chat I went down t...o chwck up on the youngster. This fledgie was on the nature strip outside a shopping centre but it took forever for me to find it as by the time I got there mum and dad had moved the youngster into the safety of the long grass in the front yard of a house across the road. As you can see from the video this feldgie is well camouflaged and there are plenty of bushes and shrubs for mum and dad to get yougnster to climb into overnight. I watched these parents for quite some time and they were feeding a never-ending stream of insects to this little one. I did take the opportunity to check him or her over and the bird was fit and healthy but just needs a week or so to build up those chest muscles and fully fledge so it can fly to at least fence height. As you can see at the end of the video s/he simply disappears into the grass safe and sound See more

06.01.2022 Remember the seagull with the hair wrapped around his leg that Magda skillfully removed - well off he went, slightly heavier than when he arrived and last seen heading for the breakwater out past the marina.

06.01.2022 A few weeks back now we got a help request from Kirsten who thought a Raven in the backyard may have waked theough concrete. Not an entirely unreasonable assumption when you see this chaps legs and feet below. Poor love couldn’t take off but it wasn’t concrete holding him back. The results have just come back from pathology on this lovely. - Avian pox virus in his legs and multiple organs - Mite infestation on his legs - Chlamydia... - Fungal infection, and - Additional bacterial infection. This Raven had somehow survived this long with multiple ailments and was dying a slow and probably painful death. The advantage with working with Zoos Vic vets is we get to learn from each animal so we know better next time what we’re dealing with. Needless to say this chap got his eternal wings on the same day we took him down to WORZ. Pathology takes time though. Big thanks to Kirsten for reaching out for help for this bird. See more

06.01.2022 This little bundle of joy came in yesterday having been found all alone in Werribee River - this wee one swam up to a boat for help and when no family or parents could be found off to the nearest vet clinic. We’re having lessons on self feeding today and we’re picking it up quite quickly. I’ll post some pics below so you can see just how little we are. If you guessed a Dusky Moorhen chick you would be perfectly correct - you can still see the egg tooth on the tip of the beak so we were only hatched yesterday by the looks of it

04.01.2022 Volunteer of the week goes to the fabulous Ella!! The lovely Anu contacted us very concerned about a Blue Tongue lizard who had been wounded by their family pet. Poor old Bluey had managed to drag himself under the air-con unit. Ella and Magda had to get their MacGyver skills happening as the gap was minuscule but Bluey was severely injured and couldn’t be left. So with Magda’s entire catering cupboard on board (it’s truly amazing how creative we get when doing rescues) and E...lla’s vet nurse skills they went to work extricating Bluey - but Ella had extra help in the form of a tiny human who was very concerned about Bluey and felt Ella needed all the support she could get. We’re sure this made Ella’s rescue so much easier Well done Ella and Magda, thank you Anu for calling us to help, thank you to tiny human for performing vital support during rescue. Sadly poor old Bluey had suffered serious injury including catastrophic spinal cord damage but as soon as WORZ received, him he was alleviated of all suffering See more

03.01.2022 One very lucky Magpie was heard flapping about by a member of public after tossing some rubbish in a bin. Misadventure led to Magpie most likely losing footing on the bin and ending up inside at Tarneit Skate Park. So after opening the bin and a quick checkover for injury and this chap was back with the family to clean off and learn from the experience.

03.01.2022 Just a little Spring activity for those interested in helping our Pygmy Possums Link to tracker here https://www.swifft.net.au/mothtracker/ If you need help in identifying a Bogong Moth or any other Victorian species for that matter Museum Vic has an excellent free app called Vic Field Guide - pic of front page in comments below.

03.01.2022 Pelican community message! This lovely Pelican has been on our radar since February this year. This pelican generally hangs out in Sanctuary Lakes and the Jamieson Way wetlands. We’ve had him reported to us several times as have Wildlife Victoria. We would love to be able catch him or her and work out what is going on in that leg but this Pelican is having none of that idea - this one is very wary of people getting close and takes off into the air if people get too close for ...his or her comfort. So if you spot this lovely certainly let us know the pelican is around but please understand that unless his condition deteriorates the chance of actually catching him or her is remote. If you spot him or her NOT moving easily away if approached slowly then definitely get in touch with us or Wildlife Victoria so we can attempt a catch. Unfortunately there is no magical bird catching device when you’ve got a bird this size who is determined at the moment not to be caught See more

02.01.2022 ALL GOOD - we have transport half way so going to meet transporter soon. Thanks for reading URGENT CALLOUT - Hi folks - just wondered if anyone was in the Yallambie area now or if anyone has someone coming from Yallambie to Point Cook who could transport two Masked Lapwing chicks that are orphans. If anyone can help out at all - even if we can get them half way that would be incredibly helpful

02.01.2022 FOUND Cockatoo in the Williamstown area. If you or anyone you know is missing a very tame and chatty Cockatoo over the last week or so please make contact. You will need to identify species and any identifying features.

01.01.2022 CALLOUT TO SANCTUARY LAKES community. Please keep your eyes out in the morning for this swan, last seen behind Northshore Drive this afternoon towards the Regatta Beach end. This is the swan we couldn’t catch on Saturday and eluded us again today - just. If you see this swan - fishing line around beak and left leg - please call the Marine Response Unit at Melbourne Zoo on 1300245678 or 0447158676 as they can be down on the lake tomorrow to try and get this lovely. Unfortunately work commitments prevent us getting there tomorrow.
