20.01.2022 15th October 2020 Hello, I hope everyone has kept safe and well over the past few months. I recently held a zoom meeting with the members of the NSW board and z...one presidents. The focus going forward into 2021 is to do our best to kick start the polocrosse season and get back to the good old days. The board members have been brainstorming and have come up with some proposals with the aim of initially getting all our existing members back on the fields as well as a few proposals that may make polocrosse more accessible to new members. These proposals would also have a lot of appeal to existing members, friends and relatives that already attend carnivals and scope for retired or ex-players. Initially the thinking would be to put the representative polocrosse well towards the back end of the season, with a push to get the club carnivals up and going. One proposal is to offer clubs to run a non-competitive grade along side the normal competition. This non-competitive polocrosse could take many forms. Some rules eg white jeans and club colours would be relaxed. Any rules pertaining to safety for horse and rider would still be adhered to. The thinking is that it would open up and encourage involvement for people who are just wanting to get involved. This proposal has received a positive response from players who have played at the top to lower grade players who gave it away because of the contact or the extra commitment they simply could not fulfil. One of the reasons given for not playing was the level of commitment they thought could not give. A non-competitive level at existing carnivals just may give people the option for involvement. It might only be for one day, it could be in a family team, it could be a chance to put together a reunion team. The blues brothers might just get the band back together! There is also the consideration of making unlimited multi horse carnivals. There was some interesting discussions on carnival dates. The question was asked why do we play polocrosse in the dead of winter? Apart from being more enjoyable for existing players, it would be an easier sell for new players if they didn’t have to brave the elements of winter. September school holidays this year would have been a great time for polocrosse, but in the past it would have all been finished. Obviously there are work and seasonal commitments that influence dates but it would certainly be worth serious discussion in some parts of the state. Something to consider when picking a date would be to not necessarily fit in around your zone but more so your region. This may promote a run of carnivals that would help kick start the participation. The non-competitive polocrosse is not to replace blue bandage, it will still be there to introduce new players with the aim of getting them into competitive polocrosse if they wish. The two may well run hand in hand. The overall message is to offer flexibility, reduce some of the barriers to getting involved. Get the club level polocrosse up and flying, building up to rep polocrosse towards the end of the year. Hitting some of the cooler districts in the spring sunshine! The half yearly meeting is to be held 25 October. So please put forward any support, thoughts or feedback. Carnival dates need to be submitted to the board 2 weeks after the half yearly meeting. The sport of polocrosse has meant a lot to so many people. For some it has been the glue for family units and responsible for life long friendships and marriages. It needs a little injection. If we adopt and support these proposals and small changes it will help to kick things off in 2021 and secure the future for polocrosse.... Not just a sport. Regards Mick Jones President Western Districts Polocrosse

15.01.2022 Regret: Harden Coaching Cancelled Unfortunately there has been very limited interest in the proposed Coaching at Harden so we have had to cancel the event. We encourage Clubs and Zones to consider running local green horse or practice chukkas, which may attract more interest.... Thankyou to those who did contact the SEO, we will be in contact and try to provide alternative events in the lead up to 2021 season.

10.01.2022 16th October 2020 Dear Hunter Valley members I hope you are all having a good season and have made the most of your time at home this past winter. It has cert...ainly been different without polocrosse getting us all together. The PANSW Board recently held a zoom meeting with all the zone presidents to explain and discuss the outcomes from their recent strategic planning meeting. The board have spent considerable time trying to plan the best way to invigorate a return to polocrosse whilst still being practical and mindful of the restrictions placed upon us by COVID. They have come up with some proposals to help attract our existing members as well as making polocrosse more accessible to new players and those who may have once competed but have since left our sport. In 2021 emphasis will be placed on getting club polocrosse up and running during the first half of the year. Representative Polocrosse will be pushed to the second half of the year. This approach would allow for a ramping up of the season, letting players start off locally and regionally. The time and money required for representative duties would not be lost if there was a reintroduction of restrictions due to COVID. It is suggested that clubs look outside of the traditional winter period for holding their carnivals. Will it make it more enjoyable and attractive to players if they are not working horses during the cold miserable months? Why don’t we extend our season further into spring and autumn? Obviously the climate is different in various areas but we should be able to collaborate with clubs in our region to get a few events on in better weather. There will be no representative carnivals in autumn which should make it easier for us to put some dates together. It is proposed that all club carnivals will have the option of being multi horse. An interesting proposal is the inclusion of a Non-competitive Grade (NCG) at each carnival. The NCG would run in addition to the regular competition. The rationale is that this form of polocrosse may be attractive and accessible to more players. There are a few suggestions for NCG format: White pants and plaited tails would not be necessary All rules pertaining to horse welfare and player safety would still need to be followed Players could play in either the NCG or the ‘regular’ competition. They could also play in the regular competition and double up in the NCG on a green horse. If their games clashed they could get someone to cover their game in the NCG. Players could make up teams with their family and friends (at the host club discretion) Players could nominate for 1 day or the whole weekend. Players progressing past Blue Bandage may find this a good stepping stone to ‘regular’ competition, having the opportunity to play with higher standard players. All in all the message is that we need to think outside the square and be more flexible in our approach to polocrosse. COVID is just one of the contributors to loss of membership, our sport has been in steady decline for a few years now. The old saying is If you do what you’ve always done, you’ll get what you’ve always got. PANSW are trying to invigorate our sport and I encourage all our members to support their efforts. Go on a membership drive, hold some coaching, some practices, encourage anyone you know with a horse to have a go. Our sport is going to need your support in 2021. If anyone has any questions or would like to discuss prior to the PANSW Half Yearly meeting (25.10.20) please give me call. Graham Wilson Hunter Valley Zone President.

04.01.2022 More Practice Chukkas at Hall 16 riders took to the fields at Hall over the weekend. With the weather a bit warmer it was decided that late Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning was the time to play. It was good to see the new players and green horses improve considerably from the last outing 2 weeks ago. A few new rider / horse combos are also coming together well. Well worth the effort. ... Bring on 2021 polox season !
