The capital of the Empire, the seat of Christendom and beacon of Hellenism fell to foreign hands on this day and the fates of all three, intertwined for a thousand years before, were irreconcilably broken. 09.01.2022 -DORIFOROS RADIO GREEK GENOCIDE COMMEMORATION DEBUT- http://www.doriforos.com.au/ As 19th of May is approaching tomorrow, keep in tune with Doriforos Greek Radio in Adelaide about the Greek Genocide alongside with committee members from the Pontian Brotherhood of South Australia including; Vice President, Bill Diamandis, Assistant Treasurer, Kyriaki Kakamanoudis and former Secretary, Stella Hellander. This program will be held on Tuesday 19th of May 2020 from 9:30AM-11:00AM... (ACST). Stella has composed a beautiful 30-minute play with Mike Ladd that will be part of the program in Commemorating the Greek Genocide. We will be posting the play after our debut on the radio station. Stella had also composed a song as part of her play called - Three Orphaned Apples. I wrote this song, inspired by my mother's refugee story. My mother Anatoli Mavridou was born in Aören, Pontos, Anatolia (Asia Minor, now Turkey) in 1918. She was a Pontian, part of a people who were Christian Orthodox, who had lived in the Black Sea region of Pontos for over 2000 years. The disastrous Greco-Turkish war ended in 1922, and in the ensuing Treaty of Lausanne, it was agreed that both countries would implement a population exchange. Generations of Pontians were forced to abandon their homes and leave immediately for Greece, their new home. International aid agencies helped along the way, as families were separated, infants died, and men were killed. In 1923, her father was slaughtered, and together with her mother, brother and two sisters, they fled their home, swept up in the chaos. Anatoli and her two sisters were separated from her mother and little brother, and the girls managed to find their way to Greece, where they were placed in an orphanage. Her mother finally found them in the orphanage, and there was a bittersweet reunion. Anatoli's little brother Dimitri had died on the road. Settled in Kozani, Greece, my mother Anatoli was married off at 14, had ten children, and six survived to adulthood. She wrote her story in 6 handbooks and gave us one each. Our Pontian culture, language, song and heritage runs deep to this day. Due to this Delilah had to have a procedure at 24 hours old to create a hole in her upper chambers to create blood flow to allow her to live until she was able to go to Melbourne for her first open heart surgery at 14 days old. Unfortunately in Adelaide, Delilah developed a condition called necrotising enterocolitis meaning that she was bleeding out of her bowl and because of this they couldnt continue to use the medication they were in Adelaide and have to intubate her and send her straight to Melbourne. We have provided a YouTube video of our member, Stella Hellander's beautiful 30-minute play. The play is called "Refugee Story - My Mother's Journey from Pontos 1922". Congratulations Stella, you are truly inspiring and we admire the hard work, love and determination you put into preserving the Pontian culture and being one with ...the Pontian Brotherhood of South Australia. Not only is this a true story of Stella's family history, but for all of those whose ancestors have gone through the genocide can strongly understand and relate to the hardships and atrocities our ancestors have gone through. Here is the video and description of her play: "A radio play by Stella Hellander and Mike Ladd. Published with the permission of the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) with gratitude. In 1923 my grandmother (Despina) flees her village Agoren in the Region of Tokat, Pontos after her husbands murder by the Turks. In the play Despina travels by night to Greece with the hope to find her daughters Maria, Anatoli (my mother) and Kereki who are taken to Greece by an American Agency for orphans. We follow Despinas thoughts, who draws courage and strength from the spirit voice of her dead husband Savvas and the voices of her daughters, amidst the atrocities and massacre of her people.
