05.01.2022 Winterizing your pool in Cairns Setting your pool up for winter in Cairns is a lot different to what would happen in the USA, unless heated, they literally do shut down the whole pool or drain them in preparation for freezing conditions, That doesn't happen here. Cairns is still Tropical and even though the water may be too cold for us locals, the southerners think were nuts not to jump in an enjoy the water. ... Everything still needs to be looked after, water needs to be tested, chemicals added and it's a time when we have the most evaporation from pools, check on them and top them up. More pumps run dry during the winter period and need replacing than any other time of the year. If you are the type of person who just wants to let it sit through the winter then you should add a good algaecide and cover it up as a minimum effort, still checking periodically for any nasty algae blooms or the water level. And leave your pump running at a reduced number of hours if you want to, but just check on what that would be as every pool needs different solutions. Winter time is actually the best time to think about working on your pool, upgrading equipment, getting rid of any stains in the pool, putting in new pool lights, building pool equipment sheds or covers, then when summer comes around which is only a few months away, your pool is ready to be used in all it's glory.
