24.01.2022 Tatiana Kashirina with a 140kg / 308lbs snatch from the 2019 Worlds training hall! Tatiana is relatively small for a super (shes often outweighed by 10-30+... kilos), but for the past 10 years shes been able to stay not just competitive but often dominant thanks to a combination of strength and near-flawless technique. This was Tatianas heaviest snatch in the training hall, and it was also her opening weight in competition. Unfortunately, it was the only weight she made (taking all three attempts to do so). She ultimately totaled 318 at this years Worldsgood enough for silver overall (behind Chinas Li Wenwen) but well below her best of 348, done back in 2014 at the Worlds in Kazakhstan, and below last years 330, as well. While Tatiana has certainly made a name for herself as one of the great lifters of the modern eraher 155 snatch and 193 clean & jerk have yet to be surpassedits unlikely we will see her again on the international stage. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) recently decided to impose a four-year ban on Russia from ALL major sporting events, due to what they see as continued problems with doping in Russia. Russia has the option to appeal the ban, in which case the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) will make a final decision. In the meantime, opinions on the ban range from it being too severe, to just right, to not severe enough. What do you think? See more

17.01.2022 1976 Olympic Games (Montreal, Canada): 90 kg clean and jerk After the snatch, it was obvious that Lee James had a good chance for a medal. Of the leaders, Lee ...was first out in the C&J with 190 and missed it. He appeared to loosen up with the jerk overhead and his arms buckled. When Lee saw 3 red lights flash on, he bent over and held his head in his hands, sure that he had blown his medal. But he took it over and made a shaky success. Grippaldi was next with 197.5 and made it easily. Taking the same weight was Broillet, and he missed it three times, not even coming close. James needed 197.5 badly, since Shopov had yet to start. He racked it well, but had a hard recovery. However, the jerk was solid and all the many American fans went nuts. Indeed, when I wrote the Iron Man article, I could hardly read my notes because my hands were trembling from excitement. I'm a fan, too! Shopov started with 200 and made it easily. Now everyone was trying to figure out how much Shopov needed to beat James. Rigert started at a very low (for him) 202.5 and made it the way you would expect David Rigert to lift 202.5 He was not about to blow his gold medal like he did it 1972. Now Grippaldi came out for 205 which would be a USA record. We had almost forgotten about Phil, but a success would put him in front of Shopov. And he made it, a real solid lift, and once again, all the Americans went crazy. But Shopov came back and made an equally solid lift to go back into third. With 4th locked up, Grippaldi decided to go to 210 in an effort to pass Shopov. Despite the fact, this was 7.5 kg more than Phil had ever cleaned in his life before today, he actually pulled it in. No clarking here! His elbows were low, but not touching his knees. But as he started to rise, he went back down and had to dump it. It looked like he was pinned, but I talked to Phil later and he told me actually he was starting to black out. Shopov must have breathed a sigh of relief, and asked for the same 210 in an effort to move ahead of James. He cleaned it, but after a hard recovery, missed the jerk. I think every American in the arena was thinking the same thing, namely, "Miss! Miss!" and they gave Shopov a round of applause for doing so. Now only David Rigert remained. He took 212.5, but fell back with the clean. On the repeat, thought, he made it easily. Now to climax the competition, Rigert asked for a 4th attempt with a world record 221.5. But alas, it was only an anti-climax as all he could do was deadlift it. He stood there looking back and forth with a sheepish grin, obviously embarrassed by what he'd done. Nevertheless, Rigert took the gold, James the silver, and Shopov the bronze. As they stood on the victory podium, I clearly saw Lee James wipe a tear from his face. When Lee received his silver medal, a great tumult erupted from the audience, even louder than when Rigert was awarded his gold. For the jubilant Americans, this class was an incredibly exciting and emotional experience. After years of frustration and false hopes, US fans were finally rewarded. As I walked out of the arena, I distinctly remember running into Mark LeMenager (a US coach and lifting afficionado), and we looked at each and both starting laughing hysterically! By the way, Lee James' 362.5 total would have exceeded the winning totals at the 2019 US Nationals in the 89. 96, 102, and 109 kg classes. FINAL STANDINGS 1. David Rigert (USSR) 170 + 212.5 = 382.5 2. Lee James (USA) 165 + 197.5 = 362.5 3. Anatas Shopov (BUL) 155 + 205 = 360 ** Phil Grippaldi (USA) 150 + 205 = 355 4. György Rehus-Uzor (HUN) 157.5 + 192.5 = 350 5. Peter Petzold (GDR) 152.5 + 192.5 = 345 6. Alberto Blanco (CUB) 152.5 + 192.5 = 345 **Disqualified: failed doping test
