20.01.2022 WWII veteran, 97 year old Jack Hair proudly stood in his driveway to honour his fallen mates. It doesn’t matter where you are, as long as you’re doing what you think you should be doing on the day. Jack served in the second 23rd Battalion 9th Division from 1941 to 1944 with the Australian Imperial Force in North Africa. On the 16th July, 1942 Jack was shot during the First Battle of El Alamein. It was that same incident that proved to be fatal for Jack’s section leader and ...quite a few others. I looked down at my section leader and was covered in blood. I yelled out ‘Cyril’s been hit!’ Then somebody said to me ‘so have you, look at your leg!’ I didn’t even know there was a bit of shrapnel in my leg.’ He spent 18 months recovering in hospital and was then medically discharged. Since his service, ANZAC Day has come to mean so much to him. I lost a brother during the war and I lost a lot of friends. He feels especially sentimental at this time of the year. I was recovering in Heidelberg Hospital when my father came to see me. It was Anzac eve the 24th of April, 1943. He said to me ‘we’ve lost our son and brother, he went down with his ship in the Navy. Jack goes on to explain the further tragedy that befell his lost brother. He was married, and he and his son didn’t meet. He was killed in April, and his son was born only in December. With 72 years of marriage behind him, his wife Joyce only having passed in 2018, Jack is humbled. We were quite good together. It would have been longer Jack, like so many others, seems to be the epitome of the spirit of ANZAC Day with his spritely demeanour, courage and good humour. And it seems he needs it, with two children, two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild to keep up with! Posted on RSL Victoria facebook page.

15.01.2022 So good to be able to have a roll up after so many weeks of lock down! We are quite restricted in what we can do - strictly members only, no more than 10 people on a green, no groups bigger than four, and of course all the hygiene and social distancing rules apply. Despite that, especially on a beautiful day like today, it was just magic!!

13.01.2022 Due to the pandemic and its implications for people gathering in groups, the Bowls Club is winding down its activities until the present crisis abates. There will be no social bowls until further notice and our weekly meals are also suspended. Our bar will open for a couple of hours on Friday (late afternoon).

11.01.2022 The Club will be continuing to host the popular Thursday Night meals despite the coronavirus pandemic. The club house does not accommodate numbers that will contravene current guidelines for mass gatherings and we do take every precaution when it comes to hygiene. Of course, the Club will take heed of any and all advice when it comes to public safety. This weeks menu is attached. If you have a large party (say, 6 or more), please contact the club (52592482) and make a booking, to assist the caterer. We hope that a night out at our club may provide some relief from the current "doom and gloom" which is unfortunately a true reflection of our present situation.

10.01.2022 Our Thursday Night Dinners will not be on tonight - normal service will resume next week Thursday 27th February from 6.00 pm. Further updates will be provided.

09.01.2022 Now that the Pennant season has finished, we will be entering a more relaxed period of social bowls on Wednesdays and Saturdays. These are mixed competitions, usually fours or triples, depending on the number of starters. Names to be in by 11.00 am on the day of play, play starts at 12.30 pm. We also hope to stage a few "special evenings" during the off-season - stay tuned for more information!!
