24.01.2022 "Goin' to the C-H-A-P-E-L and we're gonna get M-A-R-R-I-E-D..." . The prettiest little chapel around (or so we think! ). St Mary's By The Sea is is stunning heritage-listed chapel conveniently right down by the sea in Port Douglas. And boy, what a history she has! . Originally located at the other end of town, she was torn down by the infamous 1911 cyclone and then rebuilt a few years later. Eventually she became too old to function safely as a place of worship. So, und...er the loving eyes (and plenty of hands and muscle) of a few locals, she was moved - very carefully - then restored to the beauty she is today. . Now, she sees hundreds of couples every year declaring love at their weddings, overlooking the Coral Sea. . 23.01.2022 Those crazy sunset hues over the #SugarWharfPortDouglas, telling stories of long gone salty seadogs and seafarers. Did you know this ol' grand dame was built in 1904 and had a train line running to the wharf to transport cargo directly onto waiting ships. Though named the Sugar Wharf, originally it was intended to transport general cargo and minerals from the gold fields in the Tablelands, but with the sugar boom, the Sugar Wharf became primarily a way to transport sugar... to southern markets. The Wharf was last used for sugar shipment back in 1958 and today is heritage protected and a breathtaking spot for weddings, parties and events.
