16.01.2022 A little bit of PHOSC club history from the VJ class website and relates to photo and story VJ No 13 with No 16 mainsail rigged at Gymea Bay, photo from 1949 courtesy of Roger Gregson as follows As an 8year old I would dream of sailing while watching boats being rigged for racing at was then the PORT HACKING OPEN SAILING CLUB, my first sail was on an 18’ ELWOOD SEAHORSE on a screaming southerly race day and the captain (Pop Collet) desperately needed a bail boy. I sailed the ...ELWOOD for 2years before my life changed to an ancient VJ. I have in my photo collection one photo taken some 63 years ago of a VJ named EVE which was taken in Gymea Bay after I had re-built her. I found EVE in a bad state of disrepair in a back yard at Kirrawee. As a 10year old I rebuilt her (in our lounge room) to become a sailer once again Specs. Frames were built from 2’x1’ roofing battens (some dressed all round with some rough sawn) Sides and bottom were diagonally planked with Australian red cedar 12’’ wide by 3/8’’ thick Deck was planked running bow to stern with 4 or 5’’ x 3/3 cedar. Transom was dowelled and glued maple 1.25 thick Centreboard was steel plate All fittings were cast bronze The foot well was canvas sided with a timber bottom allowing to lift the bottom up if it filled with water All planking was caulked with cotton hemp and glazing putty, however when discovered she was lying in amongst a patch of weeds with grass growing through all planks. The grass had to be cut from underneath just to move her. I had no money and the then owner (a Mr Simpson) said I could have the boat for as long as I wanted it and could do anything to it as long as I didn’t change the name and returned the boat to him when I no longer had a need for it. Mast and boom were of well seasoned oregon hand shaped and all pulleys were wood blocks with bronze wheels. Stamped into the keelson beneath a brass rubbing strip was the number 13 however the sail had a number 16 so I can only surmise that the sails were a later addition. In the time I had her I replaced the boom with a very lite spruce rib from a Spitfire airplane (I think) and re-decked her with marine ply as the original cedar had warped incredibly. At the beginning of the season 2 people could lift her but by the end of the season it needed 12. a 2.5 lift pump was fitted beside the centreboard case I sailed EVE for 3-4years (often single handed) in the PORT HACKING OPEN SAILING CLUB (formerly located at Gymea Bay and then we built a Club house with child labour at the current Yowie Bay location) the Club may still have some old trophies bearing the name EVE as I managed to take out the Club point score twice and was runner up to the Championship before the more $ driven competition became too strong. The last I heard of her was that she was a club boat at Abbotsford being used as a trainer but it is only hearsay See more

16.01.2022 INTERESTED IN CREWING ON A DINGHY OR SAILING YOUR OWN BOAT WE MAY HAVE CREW POSTIONS AVAILABLE @ PHOSC Come sailing on the beautiful waters of Port Hacking with Port Hacking Open Sailing Club located at Yowie Bay. Our fleet consists mainly of Flying 11's, Herons & NS14's (Northbridge Senior), with races run every Sunday from September to April (excluding school holidays). Whether you are interested in skippering your own boat or becoming a regular crew member, there is s...omething for everyone from the social to the competitive sailor, catering for the young to the more mature ages. We welcome new boats to the club & our skippers are always looking for crew, whether they are experienced or just interested in learning and developing their sailing skills. There are also some club boats available on request to try out, if you already have some sailing skills. Due to the competitive nature of racing, the physical demands & the limited space available on dinghys, some skippers will have specific preferences relating to a suitable crew member, however we will try to accomodate you at the club to get you involved in the great sport of sailing. If youre just interested to see if either of these classes would suit you, please feel free to turn up on any Sunday that we are racing (~ midday) to have a closer look. To enquire about competing in your own boat or crewing opportunities @ PHOSC, please contact us with some details at [email protected] See more

12.01.2022 The 2020 Sydney to Hobart yacht race has cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak in New South Wales. The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) released a statement tonight 19 Dec 2020 saying the decision to cancel the the 76th Sydney to Hobart was made after the Tasmanian Government declared Greater Sydney a "medium risk" zone. The yacht club said it was unrealistic to proceed with the race as restrictions would require all competitors, families, race management and staff to quarantine for 14 days on arrival in Tasmania.

12.01.2022 Annual GENERAL MEETING **** Tonight Monday 20th July 2020 - TIME: 19:30 - 21:00 At PHOSC Clubhouse, 226B Attunga Road, Yowie Bay, NSW, 2228

11.01.2022 Hi everyone, following the latest announcement from the Federal Government regarding the Covid-19 virus which places further restrictions on public gatherings etc, the PHOSC Committee has decided that the 2019-2020 racing season for the club will end immediately. The Committee does not take this decision lightly as many members will be disappointed, however after discussions today with Australian sailing personnel and reviewing the new restrictions, the Committee has decided ...the cessation of all club activities is necessary in order to protect our members, their families and the community. Dates for the annual presentation dinner and start of the 2020-2021 sailing season will be announced later in the year, pending lifting of the current restrictions. The Committee would like to thank all our volunteers and helpers that contributed to another successful (but short) sailing season at PHOSC. We wish all members & their families the very best over the coming months. Regards, PHOSC Committee See more

10.01.2022 Hi everyone, the NSW NS14 State secretary has advised, that after consultation with Port Stephens Sailing & Aquatic Club and the NSW NS14 committee, the 2020 NS14 "State Titles" have been cancelled due to concerns surrounding the Covid-19 pandemic. If the situation improves, the NS14 committee & PSSAC are hopeful of restaging the event later in the year possibly October or November TBC. Full refunds will be issued to those that have previously entered. For further info go to... the NS14 facebook page or NSW NS14.org Unfortunately due to the Covid-19 virus, many sporting events have been cancelled around Australia and the world. At this stage PHOSC have no plans to curtail our sailing activities, however the clubs committee will continue to monitor the situation and make appropriate decisions as guided by "Australian Sailing" and our in-house committee to ensure the health and safety of our sailing family over the coming weeks and months. The "Australian Sailing" CEO has issued a statement to clubs regarding these issues, and we urge all members to read it. See more
