24.01.2022 Check out these classic texts made modern. Emily Wilsons translation of Homers The Odyssey is the first English translation by a woman. Writing in iambic pentameter with the number of lines matching that of the original Greek, her translation is fast paced and fresh, crafting an irresistible epic for a new generation of readers. Pat Barkers Silence of the Girls recounts the tale of The Iliad through the eyes of Briseis, a former queen captured in the Tojan War, and present...ed to Achilles as a prize. In doing so Barker gives a voice to the forgotten women on both sides of the war, creating a vivid picture of life in the cities and camps during the ten years of fighting. What other classic mashups have you read? What classic would you love to see reworked with a modern vibe? Add your thoughts in the comments.

22.01.2022 FIND 'EM FRIDAY! We’re back with another fabulous find it - where we cunningly place two faces for you to find, and a riddle for you to solve The first face is that of a famous early 20th century Australian author who is still talked about each and every year. The second face is that of the actor who, in a screen adaptation, played the main character of the author's most famous work.... Here's a couple of clues to help you solve the puzzle: - The author’s most famous work was published with the support of one very famous poet - first name Henry. - The author has a suburb in Canberra named after them. - The film based on the author’s most famous work was filmed in 1979 and directed by Gillian Armstrong. Who is the author, and can you find them? What is the book for which they are most famous? What is the name of the main character, and who played this character on the screen? And BONUS QUESTION - why is this author still talked about each and every year? Good luck, eagle eyes! Photo courtesy of State Library Victoria

16.01.2022 From Monday 30 November, our Emerald Hill and Middle Park libraries will re-open with special operating hours in addition to our branches that are already open at St Kilda and Port Melbourne. We expect Albert Park to open to the public soon, following the completion of building works. Along with our new branch openings, we are re-introducing some popular services and extending our opening hours on many days to 6.00 pm, to accommodate those that can’t get to us during the day.... Services to be reintroduced include limited bookable Public PC’s and some limited seating. We will be rolling back click and collect at our St Kilda location to allow staff time to assist the large number of people inside the building with newly re-introduced services. Click and Collect will still be available from our Albert Park branch. Instead of our one-hour timed sessions we will be requesting that community members sensibly limit their library visit. Item returns are now available at all library locations except Albert Park. Afterhours returns are available via our external chutes. We offer our heartfelt thanks to the community. Your patience and perseverance during this challenging time has inspired us to stay motivated and work hard towards re-opening our doors. We look forward to seeing you in our libraries once again from Monday 30 November. Learn more on our website! https://bit.ly/3dOilKm

05.01.2022 The OUR LIBRARIANS LOVE series continues! MEG reads ADULT GRAPHIC NOVELS As someone who loves illustration, and also loves reading - graphic novels are part of my reading staple. No longer confined to superheroes and adventure serials, adult graphic novels embrace a complex array of themes and are in themselves full, literary narratives accompanied by breathtaking illustrations. Pictured are a few of my favourites - Snow White is a take on the old fairy tale, but set ...in depression era New York. Sabrina was the first graphic novel to be listed for the Booker Prize, and is an eerily prescient insight into social media and the lure of conspiracy. My personal favourite is Jane, the Fox & Me - a story of a lonely and bullied young girl who gains solace from reading Jane Eyre, and the first volume to introduce me to the illustrations of Isabelle Arsenault (I now own many books illustrated by Arsenault). Pictured books include Snow White (Matt Phelan), Blankets (Craig Thompson), Sabrina (Nick Drnaso), In the Pines (Eric Kriek), Jane, the fox & me (Fanny Britt) and Cloth Lullaby (Amy Novesky). 05.01.2022 Take a moment to listen to the wonderful Tom read "Solitude" by Ella Wheeler Wilcox (poem text is below) SOLITUDE Laugh, and the world laughs with you;... Weep, and you weep alone; For the sad old earth must borrow its mirth, But has trouble enough of its own. Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air; The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care. Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go; They want full measure of all your pleasure, But they do not need your woe. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad, and you lose them all, There are none to decline your nectared wine, But alone you must drink lifes gall. Feast, and your halls are crowded; Fast, and the world goes by. Succeed and give, and it helps you live, But no man can help you die. There is room in the halls of pleasure For a large and lordly train, But one by one we must all file on Through the narrow aisles of pain.
