12.01.2022 Big Athletic Thoroughbred Yearlings Can be Developed on Fibre-Based Feeds, with Additional Benefit of Lower Risk of Stomach Ulcers A recent study looked into ho...w traditions and the economic advantage when producing big athletic Thoroughbred yearlings for sale, encourage owners to feed high levels of cereals. The negative consequence of such diets, however, can predispose the horse to gastric ulceration and developmental orthopedic diseases, impacting negatively on future careers. This study aimed to: (1) determine if an all-fiber feed would sustain equal growth rates in TB foals, versus a cereal-based feed; and (2) compare pH and lactate produced by cereal feeds and fibre feeds in vitro foregut and hindgut conditions. Eight TB foals in matched-pairs were fed cereal feeds or fibre feeds for 18 weeks. Weight gain, height at wither and hip, heart girth, and body length were recorded weekly. Similar growth rates were recorded for all measurements. This study showed that similar growth in TB foals was achieved on the fibre feed and that potentially better gut health, denoted by higher pH and lower lactate levels, could be maintained by fiber compared with cereal feed, potentially leading to a lower risk of stomach ulcers in the future...read more: https://www.sciencedirect.com//arti/pii/S0737080620302823 Photo credit Mídia
