22.01.2022 Plantar Fasciitis ( Plantar heel pain) is a common foot problem that effects ten percent of the general population at least once in their lifetime. It usually presents as "pain on first step" it can be morning pain or after rest. It most commonly effects women, occurs as we get older, also associated with high body mass index in a non athletic population and runners. Causation is also related to excessive weight bearing activity. Including standing, walking and running. As... a podiatrist who has been practising podiatry for 19 years I have seen plantar fasciitis in both men and women. One of the most common causes I have seen is use of footwear which lacks support or is worn out. Other causes include tight calf muscles and foot types that lack shock absorption at heel strike. This can occur in high and low arched foot types. My treatment plans involve treatment of cause as well as symptoms. Plantar fasciitis can be easy to resolve if treated early. Don't leave foot pain. 18.01.2022 Concerns about the use of minimalistic shoes in elderly. As a practicing podiatrist I am very concerned about the use of flat, soft soled shoes with minimal mi...dfoot support as footwear. They are both a falls and injury risk. The ideal shoes should have a firm heel counter, flex point just behind the ball area, have a small heel of 1-2cm, firm mid foot support and be made of a mid density EVA ( neither rock hard or ultra soft). If you want advice on the best shoe for you, talk to a podiatrist and please encourage the oldies you know to invest in quality supportive footwear. All the best. Jodi Tanner Positive Podiatry

15.01.2022 Winter chills and dry feet. 2017 brings us a beautiful winter. However many of us suffer dry skin and itchiness. Some suggestions for general care of the skin is not to bathe too often, as water dries your skin out. Also be careful of hot water as it can be particularly irritating.... The use of bath wash which are not soaps also helps. I recommend QV Gentle Wash or DermaVeen Extra gentle shower and bath oil. For particularly dry skin try QV cream or DermaVeen body cream. For calloused heels and skin I find Eulactol heel balm Gold and QV heel balm are great. These are all products I have used and recommend to patients with success. The best way to protect your feet from dryness and callous is to wear shoes and socks. Reoccurring corns and callous can be a sign of abnormal loads to the feet. Research has linked abnormal foot biomechanics particularly excessive pronation of the rearfoot to callous development. Abnormal foot biomechanics can be treated with foot orthotics and with foot wear changes. Please talk to a podiatrist if you have on going problems with callouses and corns. Best wishes Jodi Tanner
