18.01.2022 ***Throwback Thursday*** Iolanda Stacey CLASS OF 1999 FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? Sitting talking to my friends under the stairs, watching Mr Williams ignite pure O2 and watching Mr Stranzen (possibly with Mr Williams and a couple of other teachers) blow a bin up.... WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY? Mr Johnston, I loved learning about Classical Greece. When deciding on what I wanted to do at Uni a fascination with the natural world only just beat the Peloponnesian war. WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW OR DID YOU DO? I studied Applied Biology/ Biotechnology and went on to earn a Masters while working as a scientist specialising in plant biotechnology. Three years ago I left the lab bench behind and moved into regulatory compliance. My focus is biosecurity and research involving GMOs. WHAT DO YOU OR DID YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE? Science is a beautiful field that allows you to discover new ideas and encourages you to always question. You get to be surrounded by some truly brilliant people who are all happy to share their ideas with you and help you improve your own. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? Ask questions and listen to the answers. Also, be aware that sometimes the cleaner can provide more insight than the Professor. A person’s value isn't their job title.
18.01.2022 #Throwback Thursday Here are some photos showing students from previous eras - 1968, 1977, 1989 and a more recent photo of music students. Do you recognise anyone? We're aiming to boost the number alumni following our page. Let's aim for 150 followers over the next few months!... So please tag the photos, like our page and spread the word about our page to family and friends who attended our school. See more
16.01.2022 Learning how to build a successful career in the arts Three alumni who’ve forged successful paths as artists and designers returned to school this week to give some practical tips to our Year 11 students studying art and visual communication and design. Emma de Clario, is an actor and visual artist, who was a student at Princes Hill in the late 1980s.... Emma’s paintings have been exhibited in more than 30 exhibitions from community spaces to commercial galleries and her acting career includes roles in theatre, tv and film. Daniel Sutton, of the Class of 2011, is a graphic and multimedia designer at Arterial Design, specialising in exhibition and public space design. And Sophie Fox, class of 2015, is a sculptor, finishing her fine arts degree at Melbourne University’s VCA. Sophie recently held her first solo exhibition at a gallery in North Fitzroy. The students heard some great pearls of wisdom from our guests from how to increase your chances of getting accepted into an arts course of your choice; how to get your work noticed, how to survive rejection; how to build your career and lots more. Thank you to our generous alumni for giving up their valuable time to help our students. The Q&A panel and small group discussion session was organised by our alumni program coordinator, Caroline Milburn and art teacher, Julie Davies. The photos show our alumni guests and students at the career pathways session. Our program would love to hear from more alumni, so please get in touch at [email protected]
15.01.2022 ***Throwback Thursday***Alumni profiles Evan Miller - Class of 1999 FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? Getting to spend every day of the week with my mates. I took it for granted at the time but now I look back I didn’t realise how good it was. WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY? Jenny Little my first Year 7 home room teacher, and Peter Wood. Felt a real connection with both of them from the start, and they were both very interested in developing the kids in thei...r class. Mrs Jacobs was also another great one who read me the riot act in Year 8 which I think made me turn a corner. WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW? Resourcing Manager for Jetstar and Qantas. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE? Offering people jobs! Also learning about all the different parts of what is a very interesting industry (aviation). I also love managing my team, great to see people develop and excel in their careers. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? The more casual work you can get during the latter years at school, the better equipped you will be for Uni and the workforce. I also highly recommend traveling when you can at a young age makes you grow up real fast! The photos show Evan's Year 9 class and a recent photo of Evan.
14.01.2022 Gen Z gives back to Princes Hill SC The 23 alumni in this photo have a good reason to look happy. They’d just finished a VCE subject session with the incoming Year 12 students at school, volunteering to lead discussion groups that focused on Year 12 subjects.... As recent graduates, they gave the students useful, in-depth advice about successfully navigating the course content and Year 12. And as an added bonus, Class of 2014 alum and sports journalist, Sophie Taylor, gave a brief masterclass on how to set up an effective LinkedIn profile. It was a pleasure to host the session with this outstanding and generous group of alumni. Thank you to Sophie and the following alumni from the class of 2018 - Sam Ronfeldt, Joseph Ronfeldt, Gabriella Rosa, Maddie Reeves, Caitlin Dooley, Beatrix Brenneman, Bella McLachlan, Cate He, Emily Price, Spencer Durham, Jasmine de Palma, Ned Mollinson, Sarah Hordern, Rosie Stanton, Maija OKeeffe, Grace Robinson, Jack Dobson, Luke Speak, Herman Wang, Luca Marchetti, Harry Lowe and Class of 2017 alum Zoe Borghouts. The photo was taken in the library at Princes Hill Secondary College. Please encourage your fellow alumni to follow our Facebook page!
11.01.2022 ***Throwback Thursday*** Zoe Borghouts Class OF 2017 FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? I loved year 7 camp, getting to know everyone and I really enjoyed the elective subjects, they were really fun! WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY? I don’t think I could pick just one! I would have to say, Ms D’Menzies. Mr Major and Mr Paoli were all pretty inspiring and gave me the confidence to pursue something that I enjoyed and was interested in. WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU D...OING NOW? At the moment I am studying Immunology at the University of Melbourne hoping to get into that field at some point in the future. I am not 100% sure what I want to do from there but I'm studying what I love and I think that's the best I can do at this point. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE? I love what we are learning! It is just the perfect amount of challenging and rewarding and it’s so interesting! WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? Year 12 isn’t everything. Don’t stress yourself out with study; do your best and try to stay calm. You’ve got this. Hello everyone. Please encourage other Princes Hill alumni to follow our page. Posts about our alumni network and alumni program will return in two weeks’ time after the school holidays finish. Best wishes, Caroline Milburn. PHSC alumni manager
11.01.2022 SEEKING ALUMNI WORKING IN VISUAL ARTS & DESIGN Do you know any former Princes Hill students working in the visual arts and design fields? 08.01.2022 ***Throwback Thursday*** Sophie Taylor - Class of 2014 FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? Hanging out with friends every day and having a laugh with teachers. I did Italian all six years of school and went on the Italy trip so that was certainly memorable too!... WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY? There were a few! Year 11 and 12 were fun with Mr Kemp, doing 20th Century History and Revolutions. Kempy was one of my hardest markers but it was so worth it in the end. I also really enjoyed my time with Prof Filardo and Ms Sourlos in Italian. I may not have been the best but I certainly tried! WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW? I’m a sports journalist at an online publication called Draft Central, focusing on getting the word out on grassroots sports and writing about the elite pathways for AFL, netball and basketball. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE? I love that I was able to take two of my biggest hobbies and combine them to make a career and name for myself in the industry. I also now have an excuse to watch all the sports I used as procrastination during school and uni so I take that as a win! WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? I think it’s really important to not limit yourself. I feel like I shied away from sports journalism for a long time because it didn’t feel like an achievable goal, but since I fell into it I haven’t looked back. On that note, it’s also handy to remember that sometimes things change and that’s okay - it’s your own journey and it will take you where it does. One of the first things I realised starting uni was that I had convinced myself there was only one aspect of journalism I wanted to do, which then turned out to not be quite right for me and left me feeling like I’d messed something up. Once I came to terms with knowing I’m allowed to change my mind on what I want to do it felt like a weight was lifted off my shoulders. Thank you Sophie! To all of our alumni readers, including parents of alumni or teachers, please follow and like our page because it's one of the ways that we're trying to grow our alumni network. We're always looking for more alumni to be profiled in a Throwback Thursday post, so don't hesitate to email us if you're able to complete a Throwback Thursday profile or you can suggest someone. 05.01.2022 ***Throwback Thursday*** Christine McKenzie CLASS OF 1963 FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? Gathering in the tiny cottage on Wilson Street (?) used by the school as a place for the senior students to socialise and do homework. Working on the school magazine, and participating in the school sports.... WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY? Was there a Mr Lawrence who taught English? Introduced me to the romantic poets? Mr Knight who trained the swimming squad and also made a special friendship with me that broadened my horizons greatly, worked with him on school magazine also. WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW? Now my work is voluntary with PEN International, a worldwide organisation that advocates for freedom of expression and campaigns for writers who are persecuted, tortured, harassed for their writing. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE? Defending freedom of expression and advocating for human rights are important work, and an ongoing connection with the world of writing and writers. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? Listen well to all those who bring rich life experiences and understandings to your school days try to work out which aspects of learning mean the most to you and give you a sense of connection with yourself, others and the wider society. Thank you Christine, for sharing your thoughts and your memories of school. The accompanying photos show Christine in her garden and a school photo showing Christine with fellow members of the school magazine committee. We’d like to hear more stories from alumni. So please contact us so we can send you a Throwback Thursday profile to fill in.
02.01.2022 ***Throwback Thursday*** Daniel Sutton: Class of 2011 FAVOURITE MEMORIES OF YOUR SCHOOL DAYS? I spent every lunch time from year 8 to year 12 in the music department out the front of it. I made my best friends through music and still get to play in bands today.... WHO WAS YOUR FAVOURITE TEACHER AND WHY? That’s really hard to answer because I had a lot of passionate, inspiring and unbelievably patient teachers during my years at PHSC. Don Scott, Julie Davies, Sascha Kober, Andy Williamson, Andrew Kelly, Peter Strantzen, just to name a few. WHAT JOB OR COURSE ARE YOU DOING NOW? I’m a Graphic Designer at an Experiential Design firm. We work on projects spanning digital immersive experiences, exhibition design and wayfinding. WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB OR COURSE? The variety of projects that we work on is the best part of the job. I’m never doing the same thing for more than a couple of weeks at a time. The projects we work on become physical spaces, objects and experiences, so the outcome of my work is very tangible, which is really exciting. WHAT’S THE BEST ADVICE YOU COULD GIVE TO CURRENT STUDENTS? You don’t have to know what you’re doing by the time you finish school, or uni, or even a few years into whatever career you end up in. Discovering what you’re good at, and excited by, takes time and you should try to have as much fun figuring it out as you can.
