14.01.2022 Final year medical student Callum Press completes his 6 weeks elective placement before graduating this year and commencing Rural Generalist training. We wish Callum all the best for his future training and look forward to welcoming him back to the region. Calums journey in his own words:... My 6 weeks of placement at the Priority Health Group in Emerald has been very enjoyable and rewarding. There has been a mix of valuable learning experiences that I have been able to partake in, which have been particularly relevant due to my interest in pursuing a career as a Rural Generalist. Some of these include: observing a wide range of consultations which helped to reinforce gaps in my knowledge particularly in women and child health as well as dermatological conditions; conducting solo consultations under guidance of Dr Varsani; sitting in on telehealth consultations; observing and assisting in a range of procedures; and attending the cosmetics clinic to see a side of medicine completely new to me. I went from having no practical suturing experience to now being confident in them after building experience over several cases. Dr Varsani has acted as a great mentor, counselling me on not only medical knowledge but also the other areas involved in the management of a rural general practice, such as business considerations; the importance of a well functioning team, and the challenges of remote medicine. I was always made to feel extremely welcome and encouraged to grow and reinforce my skills as a student doctor, an invaluable opportunity for my last semester before graduation and I have definitely improved in my competence as a doctor. I am interested in becoming a rural generalist for a variety of reasons. Having grown up in a rural area, it is familiar to me and I enjoy the lifestyle a lot as well as the strong sense of community spirit in rural areas. Furthermore, the challenges and breadth of practice for a rural doctor is unparalleled in other areas of medicine which I think is both rewarding and makes every day more interesting. I am also certainly conscious of the strong need for more rural doctors and this just reinforces my choice in this path.

02.01.2022 Another blow to rural GPs and our patients. GPs are taught to interpret ECGs from medical school and to imply only Cardiologist can read them and then to reduce the Medicare rebate for our patients is not only insulting but dangerous for patients who may need them but may not be able to afford it. Another attack on the viability of Rural General Practice. The AMA, the RACGP, the Rural Doctors Association have been blind sided by this decision, do not support this move and hav...e called it out for what it is, a dangerous cost cutting measure as have the Federal Opposition. We are strongly advocating for this decision to be reversed. Lachlan Millar MP Ken ODowd MP https://www.abc.net.au//medicare-changes-to-heart/12496894
