25.01.2022 BENDIGO HOMEPAGE WORKSHOP SOLD OUT, so Im hula-hooping like this little Prom Queen. Buuuuuuu-uuuut for all my darling Melbourne friends, keep your peepers peeled. East-side workshop tickets will be announced tonight. And while were here, can we just take a moment to admire this illustration @joelpringle created for me? Too cute.

25.01.2022 Dont fret, pet - Im still here. I have been wildly busy behind the scenes, writing for some ridiculously awesome clients. But also? Ive been home-schooling my kids. Need me to order you a Coca Cola in Mandarin? Im on it.... Plus, Ive been snacking like its an Olympic sport. Qualified with a PB. And, yes, Ive had a tantrum or two. Boy, did COVID-19 plant me on my ass but not for reasons you might think. Surprisingly, I had a surge of enquiries as restrictions kicked in and business owners began to ramp up their messaging, or change tack entirely. Only one client postponed a project. But between copywriting gigs, family, my sanity, and the pantrys biscuit stash, Instagram didnt make the must do list. Look, I know socials are part and parcel of running a business, but in the interest of keeping it real, I wont pretend that Im keeping all my balls up in the air with a show of daily (ahem, weekly) posts. BUT, with one of my darlings returning to school next week, and my husband heading back to his office, Im looking forward to a quieter house, fewer disruptions, a clearer mind, and more productivity. (Probs just as many snacks, TBH. And catching up with you here again. Balls a-go-go. Pic X Leah Ladson

24.01.2022 If theres ever been a time to immerse myself in content thats all about knowing the value you offer, shutting down toxic inner-dialogue, and having the confidence to back yourself, its NOW. This is exactly what The Changeroom with Alexandra Shea is all about. And Ive had the honour to edit Alexs website over the last week or two. Seriously, if youre in a leadership role but cant help but think IS THIS IT? or if you know from your toes to your elbows that you C...AN take your business to the next level you just need some to help get there - watch this space. (And save this post!) Welcome to the Prom Queen dancefloor, Alex. You are a DREAM to work with! I cant wait to see you share your coaching skillz, knowledge and The Changeroom (and hey, Ill admit it - your new copy!) with the world. See more

24.01.2022 I can tell you from (a lack of) experience that Im NOT one of those people who casually packs her bags and says, Baby, Im outta here! When it comes to travelling, Im more of the lightly salted variety than the well seasoned kind. There are lists, checklists, reminders, spreadsheets, pieces of string tied around my finger, and more lists. #sorocknroll But today, I struck that last item off said list, packed my (amazing and beautiful yellow) suitcase, and Im en route to... Melbournes Tulla as we speak. New York City awaits! Im leaving @the_dirt_dude and my two babes at home for an adventure of the US of A with my mum over the three weeks. Stay tuned in stories. Therell be lots of laughs, jetlag, driving on the wrong side of the road and whatever else awaits.

23.01.2022 Lists. I love em. I love writing lists and I love crossing things off them. First day back at Prom Queen HQ and this was my modus operandi. Too much mess in my brain zaps my creative energy. ... Im not one for vision boards. I cant sit still long enough for mediation. But starting my day with a list is where Im at. Write it down. Cross it off. Gettin shit done How do you stay focused, productive and organised? Or are you still trying to find your groove? PS. How much caffeine consumption post-holiday is normal? Asking for a friend. PPS. If you are one of a few people waiting for an email from me, its on its way! See more

23.01.2022 Did I tell you how excited I am about my new website? Did I? Diiiiid I? Launching soon! ... P.S. Im totally excited. @joelpringle See more

22.01.2022 This lady needs no introduction, but she damn well deserves one. This is Trish, AKA @chromaticalclub . She doesnt take herself too seriously, but she doesnt muck around when it comes to supporting creative business owners. Shes created an amazing online space for us to chat, share, support each other, learn, vent, play Candy Crush - okay, maybe not that last one. ... But @chromaticalclub IS all about upskilling, getting your tush out of a business rut, and connecting you with some great businesses brains. Itll save you some of the stress, confusion and isolation of running your own gig. Anyway. TODAY AT 12pm AEDT Im joining Trish for her first ever LIVE Q&A. And itll help you take your homepage from beige to badass. Bloody booyah! Were tackling stuff like: Eeek! Photos of me? Should I have one on my homepage? How much information is too much? I dont know what to write - so I dont write anything at all! Plus so many more things people struggle with when it comes to DIY-ing their homepage. And if I show up with food in my teeth you HAVE to tell me, okay? See more

21.01.2022 I was only a little bit nervous when The Fearless Designer asked me to write her new about page. Okay, fine. I was shitting myself. Me? Write an about page? For you?... But youre cool. And fearless. And you make overalls look sexy while I remind people that theyre a great outfit choice for gardening/ tending to animals on the farm. (Whos the bona fide Old MacDonald here then hey?) Then I realised that was the whole point. I love what this woman and her business stands for. I encourage others to be fearless in their business. And the best way to write fearless copy? To face my fears too. Pretty damn happy that I did. Amber Ladd Studio has done a cracking job of this site. @Leah Ladson Photography brought the killer , and the vision? Bravo Morgi, bravo. @leahladson via @the.fearless.designer @ Bendigo, Victoria

21.01.2022 To the new faces that have joined me here in Instaland recently - HELLO! I suppose nows a good time to share a few bits and bobs about me, the gal behind the scenes: I LOVE fixing stuff and I can see potential in the oldest, most derelict things. Ive reupholstered chairs (badly) and renovated houses (thankfully better than my upholstery efforts). Sit me down with an episode of Grand Designs and Im one happy chick. I suffer anxiety. Im getting better at managing ...triggers (prolonged stress and/or specific situations) but Im also getting better at accepting that its just another unique part of me. What helps me most? Being open and honest about it. I cant remember the last time I read fiction. I love reading non-fiction, mostly business and self-help books because Im fascinated by how our brain works and learning is my happy place. But reading some lighter subject-matter with my daughters class every Wednesday keeps my heart full and my feet grounded. Im an introvert. This surprises a lot of people because Im always up for a chat (WARNING: there are no quick chats with me) but when it comes to recharging, I need silence and solitude. I can tell you from experience that a road trip isnt a road trip unless youve got Cold Chisel on the playlist. #youcantakethegirloutofthebush Tell me something I dont know about you! See more

20.01.2022 "It was early 2017 and I was mid-clusterfuck, so her timing - as youd expect from any writer worth her salt was impeccable. Id shut the doors on my photography business, and my daughter, thankfully, was now in remission. (A palatable way of saying itd been 12 months since cancer and chemo and tubes had taken over her tiny body and her eyes - once grey-ringed, heavy-lidded and too pained to hold my gaze - sparkled bright once more.) Just because I couldnt get out o...f bed some days didnt mean I wasnt depressed. I was busily re-reading old diaries and notebooks, looking for clues thatd help me figure out WHAT THE HELL I WAS GOING TO DO NEXT." I just rewrote my About page. That there is part of it. And I wanted to remind you that your About page doesnt have to be all: My name is I launched my business in Its located at We make/sell/specialise in My star sign is You CAN make things super personal AND keep it relevant to your businesss purpose. 18.01.2022 [PERSPECTIVE] A couple of months back, I was stood up for appointment. And while it mightnt sound like a big deal, man, I was pissed. Not only was it meant to be an opportunity for me to chat with a new potential client, Id arranged other plans around it, both before and after the scheduled meet time. Id forfeited a gym class I really wanted to go to. It was school holidays, so Id prepared a smorgasbord of snacks and chosen a movie for my kids so theyd be happily ent...ertained (i.e. quiet) during my online meeting. Bloody hell, Id even made an effort with my hair, picked something decent to wear, done my makeup, and then...nada. Didnt they realise the effort Id gone to? Didnt they know how hard it was juggling kids and business and LIFE? Couldnt they have emailed to take a rain check? Whats with people?! A few days later, I heard from them. (And of course, they were lovely.) Turns out, they were frantically juggling life and business and kids too. Something had to give. Then it dawned on me: I was the one in charge of my business. I was the one who opened up an appointment time when I could have made my gym class a non-negotiable. I was the one who failed to send an email confirming the appointment the day before because I was too busy. And it was ME whod offered a free, no-strings-attached chat in the first place. No-one owed me anything! I am truly grateful that I can work around the needs of my family. Im honoured that my wonderful clients put their faith in me to grow their business; thats not something I ever take lightly. And most days, Im aware of how lucky I am that I get to be my own boss. But every now and again, I need to pull my head out of my ass and remember why I started this business in the first place. Im here because Im passionate about helping women who are juggling the same day-to-day crap that I am. I get to set my hours and the rules and the boundaries. And I need to remember there is only ONE person responsible for keeping me happy in business, and in life in general - ME. What pisses you off about YOUR business And what are YOU going to do about it? @cloverletter + @shopbando

18.01.2022 I didn’t want to burst Kate's* bubble of pure excitement by pointing out her epic typo. Gosh only has one H in it. I guess that’s the kind of cRaYzAy stuff that happens when words and emotions collide. (Always my goal, btw.)... But the real reason why ALL NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED isn't so Kate's* identity is protected from the (awesome and intentional) typo. It's because we’ve been working on some top-secret stuff, and she wanted me to remain her silent partner in crime Mwa-hahahahaaa. Have you heard of a ghostwriter? SHHHHHHH. It’s a writer who remains behind the scenes, so you can present your masterfully written piece to the world with your name as the author. It’s not just for books it can be for your website’s sales copy, your eBook (or lead-magnet), your About page or even a promo email sequence to your subscribers. You’ll have copy that sounds like you, grammar and spelling on point, plus a profesh strategy that’ll help you reach your goals like more subscribers, more sales, or more sales AND a higher price point. Definitely worth getting goshhhhhhh darn excited about See more

16.01.2022 Today was the first day that both of my kids were at school since COVID-19 lockdowns. To end the homeschool experience (shit show) on a high, we spent part of yesterday checking out waterfalls and discovering a bakery with the TASTIEST sausage rolls. Along with everyone else in the state.... You can't see it here, but it was tricky to social distance with so many people squeezing up and down this narrow path. Which leads me to something else I often see squeezed into tight spaces: My post-COVID-19 ass in my workout leggings. Kidding. (Not kidding.) Totes serious, it's TOO MANY LINKS IN ONE EMAIL. I used to do it too, be all *I'm emailing you! I’m sharing everything!* When consumers and business owners had to change their shopping habits recently, I watched (and read) with interest as more emails hit my inbox. Look, I know we want to make our emails more value-packed than the $5 Kids Donburi I sometimes secretly order for myself from our local Japanese place. But here's the thing: 4, 6, 7 different links in ONE email won’t ring in more $$. More is not more. More is... confusing. When I open an email with links to a sales offer, a podcast interview, a new service launch, plus a cute/ slightly irrelevant "OMG you have to try this banana cake recipe!" do you know what I do? I don’t give a click I’m time poor! Sometimes I’m lazy. And I'm terrible at making decisions. I want you to make my life easier. And if you can’t decide what's most important to promote, how will I? The short answer is: I won't. To get your click through rate and sales up, choose ONE goal for your email, and add ONE link to get us there. Add that same link three times over, just make it the same link each time. (Like to your store page, lead magnet, a particular product, or the wait list for your new service.) You’ll get a better result AND you’ll save a stack of time. Save the rest of your news for weekly or tri-weekly, emails - with one link. And if you need a great banana cake recipe? I found one during lockdown. Just don’t say I didn't warn you about not being able to fit back into your pants. PS. Get in touch via [email protected] for help with your email

16.01.2022 Im so excited to welcome this glorious human onto Prom Queens dancefloor! Kacie is a reiki healer and intuitive guidance reader. She helps people work through stress, frustration, and confusion to live a happy, fulfilling life. What I love about this woman? Kacie WALKS. THE. TALK. Ive experienced her gifts and talents in a guided group meditation (oh boy, was I chilled after that - and Im never chilled!) and that time I thought itd be fun to do a card reading on... my birthday this year. Dont get me wrong, we shared plenty of laughs, but had I known what wed unearth during our session I probably wouldve ordered something stronger than a peppermint tea. Kacie, the time, care and attention you share so generously with your clients is AMAZING and I cant wait to inject a whole lotta that heart n soul into your new copy! @gingerhousephotography See more

14.01.2022 [ SAVE THE DATE! 16.4.2020 ] I cant remember how @rebeccataylorofficial and I initially crossed paths but our first quick cuppa lasted about 3 hours as we exchanged ideas, biz goals and heaps of laughs. Shes one of those people youd call a dynamo. And her Visibility Makeover Group is just one way she helps business owners up their game.... (You can join the group for free, btw. Yep, told you shes a good egg.) Im hanging out with Rebecca later this month to share how you can strengthen your biz and brand by being more visible on your homepage. And its easier - and less scary - than you might think. Stay tuned for more deets and follow @rebeccataylorofficial in the meantime. PS. I promise we wont talk for 3 hours this time! Itll be a quickie, action-focused online session See more

13.01.2022 [ SELLING YOURSELF FEEL LIKE A NIGHTMARE? This Potion Will Break The Spell ] You know whats spooky? Frightening? Blood curdling? Seeing business owners lose out on sales because they hate selling themselves.... And you know what? I dont blame them. Talking on socials with zombie-like monotony about a new service sucks harder than Dracula on a good vein. Staring with bloodshot eyes at the computer screen attempting yet another buy my stuff blog post will turn anyone from Jekyll to Hyde. And promoting your workshop by handing out flyers on the mean streets after sundown, well, thats just weird. And a little creepy. Wanna buy a tiiiiicket? He-he-he-he-he-heeeee. The trick to making selling a treat? Shift the focus from what you sell, to why you sell it and who it supports. Example: Im running interior styling workshop! Its only $99! Ill be hosting only one this year so be quick, buy a ticket! Is sweeter when its said like this: Selling your house? A few interior styling tricks can get you a higher sale price even by using the furniture you already have. Id love to help you with that. Example: Discounted corporate headshots just $99. Get 20 files on USB. This month only! Sounds less like B-grade horror movie script if you say: Losing loyal customers to the new competition? What if you could boost your credibility and your sales, without lowering prices? Id love to show you how, and itll only take one hour. When your sales pitch starts to light you up instead of making your skin crawl, chances are your clients wont run away screaming like theyve just seen the ghosts of salesmen past. Because the scariest part of running a business isnt selling yourself. Its the shock of realising that without the scare-tactics and special effects, selling is simply SUPPORTING. That, and the fact youve been throwing cash out of the cauldron and into the fire all this time. See more

06.01.2022 WHAT THE HECK DO CAMERAS HAVE TO DO WITH COPYWRITING? I clocked up 15 years in the photography industry pre-Prom Queen, where it obvious pretty early on that I was better on the jaw than I was at taking photos. Sales became MY THING.... Sure, I loved the thrill of charging credit cards for amounts that made my HECS debt look like a light lunch expense. But I wasnt silly enough to overlook the fact that without truly believing in what you sell, or committing 110% to making your customers life better, all the hustle in the world wont add up to What I didnt realise back then was that I was honing 3 copywriting skills Id use to help my clients grow their sales today: Focus on building rapport above getting the sale. The latter wont happen without the first. Specificity sells. Naming your clients problems, obstacles, goals and desires (dont just call problems problems!) will show you understand their needs AND make them feel like theyre the most important person in the room. Visa or MasterCard? In face-to-face sales we prompt and direct the customer. Your website is your 24/7 sales person, so it MUST include Calls to Action (CTAs) to tell clients what to do after they read your blog, your About page, newsletter, product descriptions and more. Want people to SUBSCRIBE, SHOP, GET OFFER, or BUY NOW? Ask and prompt them every step of the way, even if the next step seems crazy obvious. 03.01.2022 [ WHEN PEOPLE UNSUBSCRIBE FROM YOUR EMAIL LIST ] You can probably tell by the way I awkwardly mounted this stool. Dancing is *not* my strong point. ... In fact, my lack of talent on the dance floor was brought to my attention at a party years ago by my then-boyfriend-now-husband. There I was, dancing up a storm AS FAR AS I WAS CONCERNED when he remarked upon my 'interesting' moves. He's never been able to live the comment down. Mostly because I bring it up every time we're at couples counselling. But there's one thing I get up and dance for, no matter what. It's when someone unsubscribes from my email list. Unsubscribes used to freak me out I'd check to see if I recognised who it was. Did I cause offence? Was my helpful how-to tip that unhelpful? Were they so annoyed that I tried to sell them something (imagine!) that they hit that UNSUBSCRIBE button like it was the best decision they'd made all day? It'd put me in a writing funk. "But that was my best email ever! And for what?!" But now? I do a little celebratory dance. And I write another email Because one less person in my audience that was never going to be the right customer for me gives me a clearer understanding of who IS. Besides, emails that are repeatedly ignored and unopened by subscribers aren’t doing favours for deliverability and engagement. (Think it as subscribers doing list-housekeeping for you.) And on the days that I have unsubscribes? I also have (happy) replies to my emails. I have enquiries from people I'm excited to work with. And I book projects that get my heart pumping. Not everyone is right for your business, or you for them. Your best emails, your best service offerings, and your best work will polarise people. Keep doing it for the ones you want to work with the most. And while you're at it? Make it unforgettable with your unique I-ain't-seen-moves-like-that-before kinda style Do you get stuck writing emails? What slows you down? Leah Ladson Photography

03.01.2022 Don’t fret, pet - I’m still here. I have been wildly busy behind the scenes, writing for some ridiculously awesome clients. But also? I’ve been home-schooling my kids. Need me to order you a Coca Cola in Mandarin? I’m on it.... Plus, I’ve been snacking like it’s an Olympic sport. Qualified with a PB. And, yes, I’ve had a tantrum or two. Boy, did COVID-19 plant me on my ass but not for reasons you might think. Surprisingly, I had a surge of enquiries as restrictions kicked in and business owners began to ramp up their messaging, or change tack entirely. Only one client postponed a project. But between copywriting gigs, family, my sanity, and the pantry’s biscuit stash, Instagram didn’t make the ‘must do’ list. Look, I know socials are part and parcel of running a business, but in the interest of ‘keeping it real,’ I won’t pretend that I’m keeping all my balls up in the air with a show of daily (ahem, weekly) posts. BUT, with one of my darlings returning to school next week, and my husband heading back to his office, I’m looking forward to a quieter house, fewer disruptions, a clearer mind, and more productivity. (Probs just as many snacks, TBH. And catching up with you here again. Balls a-go-go. Pic X Leah Ladson

03.01.2022 I didnt want to burst Kates* bubble of pure excitement by pointing out her epic typo. Gosh only has one H in it. I guess thats the kind of cRaYzAy stuff that happens when words and emotions collide. (Always my goal, btw.)... But the real reason why ALL NAMES HAVE BEEN CHANGED isnt so Kates* identity is protected from the (awesome and intentional) typo. Its because weve been working on some top-secret stuff, and she wanted me to remain her silent partner in crime Mwa-hahahahaaa. Have you heard of a ghostwriter? SHHHHHHH. Its a writer who remains behind the scenes, so you can present your masterfully written piece to the world with your name as the author. Its not just for books it can be for your websites sales copy, your eBook (or lead-magnet), your About page or even a promo email sequence to your subscribers. Youll have copy that sounds like you, grammar and spelling on point, plus a profesh strategy thatll help you reach your goals like more subscribers, more sales, or more sales AND a higher price point.
