We pray for the safety and welfare of those effected by the tragic fires, and give thanks to the countess men and women fighting them on our behalf. . . We also pause to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service of our great nation, and the countless veterans who continue to battle the effects of their... service. . 23.01.2022 In memory of 3RAR Paratrooper PTE Jamie Clark, who died on 10 March 2005, when he fell down a mine shaft while searching for arms caches as part of RAMSI; the Regional Assistance Mission to the Solomon Islands. A month before the tragic accident, the Australian Federal Police had highly commended Jamie for pacifying a knife-wielding woman without any undue force. The East Timor veteran is memorialised by a Solomon Islands kindergarten established in his name by his parents. ... His name also appears on the AWM Honour Roll after his mother, Avril, campaigned to add the names of 48 Australians killed in post-World War II peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. They were previously only recognised in a book at the AWM. We appreciate and thank you for your wonderful effort Avril. Thinking of you and the family on this sad day. Rest in peace, Jamie, and thank you for your service. . . #veteran #purplewarriorsaustralia #ADF #outrigger #race #powerofsport #inspiredbyyou #combatveteran #struggle #destiny #achievement #woundedwarrior

22.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1943 Sergeant T.C. Derrick DCM, 2/48th Battalion, was awarded the Victoria Cross at Sattelberg, New Guinea. Thomas Derrick was born on 20 March 1...914 in Adelaide. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 5 July 1940. Derrick embarked for the Middle East with the 2/48th Battalion and soon proved himself to be an excellent soldier, gaining promotion to corporal while his unit was in Tobruk. In July 1942 he was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for his bravery and leadership at Tel el Eisa. At the end of that month Derrick was promoted to sergeant. By October his unit was in action at El Alamein, where he again served with distinction. Derrick's unit returned to Australia in February 1943, training in north Queensland and Papua before helping to capture Lae in September. In November the 2/48th were in action at Sattleberg, overlooking Finschafen. Fighting amidst rugged terrain and under heavy fire from Japanese machine guns, Derrick performed the feat that earned him the Victoria Cross. Scaling steep cliffs, under fire, hurling grenades and using his rifle he cleared ten machine gun posts, making possible the capture of Sattleberg. The 2/48th returned to Australia in February 1944 and in August Derrick was posted to an officer training unit. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in November. On 1 May 1945 he took part in the landing at Tarakan, Borneo. Later that month he led his platoon against a heavily defended position code-named Freda, gaining all but the highest knoll. That night a Japanese machine gun fired into the Australian lines. As he sat up to check that his men were all right, Derrick was hit by five bullets from the gun's second burst. He had been lightly wounded before, but recognised that this time his wounds were mortal. He died on 24 May 1945. Read more: https://www.awm.gov.au/visit/exhibitions/fiftyaustralians/14

21.01.2022 What a great initiative.

20.01.2022 Ten years ago today. Early in the morning of 21st June, 2010, a U.S 101st Airborne UH60 Blackhawk crashed in Northern Kandahar, Afghanistan, carrying operators from the Australian Special Operations Task Group, Task Force 66, from the 2nd Commando Regiment. The crash claimed the lives of PTE Benjamin Chuck, PTE Tim Aplin and PTE Scott Palmer. Both pilots and the second loadmaster survived, however crew chief SSGT Brandon Silk was also killed. Seven Australians survived, two ...of whom are still today serving with the 2nd Commando Regiment. The second and third aircraft landed to secure the crash site and begin triage of the casualties amidst the burning wreckage and exploding bullets; the quick thinking actions of two men saw them use an engine cowling of the fallen aircraft as a makeshift stretcher for the casualties that today sits on the walls of Australian War memorial in Canberra. The makeshift stretcher hung in the hospital trauma area in the ISAF Role 3 Medical Centre at Kandahar as a memorial to those who lost their lives and as a token of recognition to the health staff involved in resuscitation efforts on that fateful day. 21 June, 2010. Ben Chuck, Tim Aplin, Scott Palmer. Never forgotten. Lest we Forget.

20.01.2022 PWAUS competed at the Mollymook Regatta competing in the open men's short course yesterday. Here is the wrap up from Jas. Andy was designated stroke in seat 1 with our novices Dimi and Skev in seat 2&3. We had a great start and were placed 4th for the first 1.5km. There was a little chop as we heading outside the heads and our ama had been popping on 4 or 5 occasions. ... At 2km we had a huli. Even though we were quick with our huli drill the swell eventually swamped our OC6. Once we rigged for a tow and were heading back to shore Ray and Mick were stung by blue bottles (nice raah Ray). A Special mention to Dimi who was feeding the fish over the bow. Thanks to Andy for not mentioning that we had a 2m fish directly beneath us when we were in the water. There were a few hulis in our race, which included 13 people returning to shore and 3 going to hospital. Quote of the day was Andy: This was the most fun that I have had in an Outrigger.

18.01.2022 We had some testing conditions with a new crew yesterday for the Pasha Dasha in Newcastle. Great effort from the team over the 10km short course and from Dave for his first time in an OC6. As always many thanks to @koa_kai_outrigger_ for the use of their OC6 and @newcastleoutriggers for the event. Looking forward to the next event on the national racing calendar. . #veteran #purplewarriorsaustralia #ADF #outrigger #race #powerofsport #inspiredbyyou #combatveteran #struggle #destiny #achievement #woundedwarrior

15.01.2022 7 years ago today we lost a true hero. On this day in 2013 Corporal Cameron Baird showed extreme devotion to duty the ultimate self-sacrifice in an assault into... Ghawchak Village, Uruzgan province, Afghanistan. In giving up his life to protect others and for the most conspicuous acts of valour, Cameron was later posthumously awarded Australia’s highest honour, The Victoria Cross. Corporal Baird died how he lived - at the front, giving it his all, without any indecision. He will forever be remembered by his family, mates and the soldiers he served with in the 2nd Commando Regiment. Missed every single day. Without Warning. Lest We Forget. #CameronBairdVCMG #CommandoForLife #WeWillRememberThem

05.01.2022 Three members of 2nd Commando Regiment (Major A, Major L and Major M )have taken up the challenge to raise $15,000 for the The Commando Welfare Trust (CWT) by doing 50,000 burpees between them in 2019. Major M is a long term member of Purple Warriors Australia and competes regularly. Thats an average of 46 burpees each, per day, meaning each of the three members will do 16,667 burpees during the year to succeed in their challenge. The CWT supports members of 2nd Commando Reg...iment and other units within SOCOMD who have been negatively impacted by their service. The CWT supports members and their families going through hard times, including those who have been killed, wounded, injured or ill as a result of their time within SOCOMD, where other organisations cannot.
