09.01.2022 Your computer keyboard is home to a complex mix of bacteria and fungi. This observation led one group of researchers to see what microbes are on keyboards in an... intensive care hospital. They found that 76% of keyboards had viable levels of Staphylococci bacteria and other fungi. Those used by nurses showed the highest levels. These studies show the risks from nosocomial infections posed by hand-mouth contact with inanimate surfaces. 03.01.2022 Read The Toxic Mould Review http://mould.news/. This week I want to draw attention to two papers that came out in the literature. The first focuses on the h...istory of fungal pathogens that affects humans and the second comments on the impact that yeast have on the elderly and whether or not there are differences in the yeast contamination levels of elderly people in a nursing home environment versus their own home environments? The first article which appeared in Genes & Immunity reviews the early literature on fungi. For example the paper highlights the fact that Louis Pasteur was solicited by Napoleon the III to work out why wine exported to England was going off. So the article presents early information about fungal biology showing that Louis Pasteur worked out that a microbe was responsible for converting the sugar from grapes into alcohol. He went on to show that the reason the wine went off was acidification by another microbe which eventually led on to the Pasteurization principle or using heat to kill microbes. The article also presents some interesting statistics. When I was at university I was told they were about 100,000 to 120,000 different species of fungi, but using molecular techniques there are now known to be more than four million fungi. In any case, I suggest that the interested reader have a look at this paper because it presents an easy reading overview of the Microbiology a fungi and ends really with a call to action because fungal diseases are significantly neglected and importantly their true impact on human health is not widely appreciated. The second paper is really interesting because the authors examined the levels of Candida in elderly persons inside a nursing home and those who were residing in their own homes. And the results showed that people living in nursing home accommodation were more likely to have candidiasis and that their levels of yeast were higher than those living in their own home. So of course thats concerning for any persons who have elderly relatives or are in rest homes themselves, and its important to be aware of these sorts of issues. The authors suggest that it may be the level of relatively poorer over-all health and more severe health decline rather than poor sanitation in persons in rest accomodation versus their own homes. Nevertheless, candidiasis is serious and like the first article says, increased awareness to fungal infections and situations and environments that encourage their spread needs highlighting.
