21.01.2022 This afternoons press conference about the Coronavirus by the Chief Medical Officer and the Prime Minister provided the following insights: -At this point they said the risk was low. -They recommended non-essential large gatherings be avoided. -At the same time, they were saying to go about your daily business as per usual.... People with a disability are a vulnerable group; a larger proportion are older, and with underlying health conditions. Almost half of all people with disability are aged 65 and above.* And only 24% of adults with disability experience very good or excellent health, compared with 65% of without disability.** We attach the latest information we received today from Healthdirect Australia and the Consumers Health Forum of Australia on how people can avoid the coronavirus, and the help hotline. Please share this widely with your friends and family in #canberra. Infographic text: How to avoid infection or spreading the virus. Wash your hands regularly with soap & water for at least 20 seconds. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Cover your mouth or nose while sneezing. Use only disposable tissues and dispose after use. Avoid close contact with anyone showing respiratory symptoms. Monitor travel advice. Stay home when you are sick. 20.01.2022 Hi folks Weve had some feedback from members about how great it would be to have wheelchair access to #Canberras various beautiful river swimming spots. People with a #disability should be able to join in with all aspects of society and this includes enjoying our beautiful outdoor areas. Pictured below is Pine Island river. Other great spots in Canberra include: Uriarra Crossing, Point Hut, the Cotter, and Lake Burley Griffin beach to name a few.... We would love to hear more from you about this idea. Can you please send our office a message to [email protected] with the subject Accessible river access in the subject line. Please tell us: -What would accessible river beach access mean to you? -What would make it easier for you to get down to the river or water? -What would you like to see here? -Do you have any preferences for locations? -Who would you go here with? If you know someone who would be interested but may need some help telling us their feedback, please reach out. Thanks everyone! 17.01.2022 Dont miss WIN News Canberra or 9 News Canberra tonight to hear our Executive Director speak about the closure of the Commonwealth Bank in #Weston Creek. Local #infrastructure and face to face services (such as local banks) are an important part of the fabric of society. Sometimes, online services are just not good enough. A real person, with face to face help is what is best for many people.... Businesses that connect with the community, and provide real customer service is of vital importance to people with #disabilities in #canberra.

14.01.2022 We are pleased to announce that we have now moved. Our new public presence and office support is provided by the Weston Creek Community Centre, at Cooleman Court Shopping Centre. This is a central location at Parkinson St Weston, staffed by friendly professional office staff 8:30am-5pm Monday to Friday. PWDACT is pleased to have our organisation based here, with a long affiliation as one of our member organisations Sharing Places Inc. started here! (Ministerial opening pictu...red here in black and white!) We look forward to forging more community ties as we continue to build a stronger voice for people with disabilities, and connect our organisation further with the #Canberra community. Around 65,000 people in Canberra have some form of disability. Our website remains the same, as does our email and phone number. This move and activity was made possible under the ILC Grants 2019/20 as part of our Organisational Development program.

Message us today at [email protected] Did you know:... -People aged between 15 and 64 years with disability have both lower labour force participation (53.4%) and higher unemployment rates (10.3%) than people without disability (84.1% and 4.6% respectively). -Did you know almost one in five (18.9%) people with disability aged 15-24 years experienced discrimination. In almost half of those instances, the source of discrimination is an employer. Statistics courtesy of the Australian Network on Disability

13.01.2022 Do you have disability support workers coming to your home? We know many of you are concerned about visitors to your home in the current Covid-19 climate. While some people still have workers visiting, some are not allowing workers in. Disability support workers may or may not have adequate access to Personal protective equipment, and visit peoples homes, after visiting multiple other people. ... We are seeking urgent reassurance from the Federal Government on this matter. We are also asking that the NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme now, more than ever before, be flexible to people using their NDIS funds. We are recommending any compliance activities be paused and/or withdrawn. We would be pleased to see them announce allowed payment to family members in areas of significant risk or thin markets. The NDIA could immediately enact their operational guideline clause about risk of harm to participants. We are working with our sector colleagues to seek urgent reassurance and advice from the Federal Government as soon as possible. ABC Canberra #canberra Disability Inclusion and Equality in Canberra

03.01.2022 We were heartened to receive a phone call from our Patron His Excellency David Hurley, Governor-General of Australia He enquired as to the wellbeing of our people, and passed along his thoughts and well wishes during this difficult and unprecedented time in Australias history. Two issues which our Executive Director raised directly with him were:... - the lack of the Covid-19 payments to people on disability pensions, and -the lack of personal protective equipment for carers.
