25.01.2022 Too many Victorian families are stuck in a bind: They'd save hundreds on their power bills with a newer, more efficient heating system but the cost to get it ...replaced is always out of reach. So they keep paying more and saving less. We're about to change that. We're helping 250,000 low-income households replace their old heater with an energy-efficient electric heater and cooling system saving them up to $900 a year. We're also improving the energy efficiency of over 35,000 social housing properties through heating, cooling and hot water upgrades plus replacing seals on windows and doors. And because no one should have to choose between keeping the lights on and putting food on the table, we're providing $250 payments for eligible concession card holders to help with immediate costs. It's all part of the biggest household energy efficiency package of any state, ever supporting thousands of jobs all up, saving families hundreds every year and helping to drive emissions down. This past winter has been a long, hard slog. More time at home has meant bigger bills. And this investment will help Victorians not just get through today but plan for tomorrow too.

20.01.2022 Iron is a key nutrient for normal central nervous system (CNS) development and function; thus, iron deficiency as well as iron excess may result in harmful effects in the CNS. Oligodendrocytes and astrocytes are crucial players in brain iron equilibrium. However, the mechanisms of iron uptake, storage, and efflux in oligodendrocytes and astrocytes during CNS development or under pathological situations such as demyelination are not completely understood. In the CNS, iron is d...irectly required for myelin production as a cofactor for enzymes involved in ATP, cholesterol and lipid synthesis, and oligodendrocytes are the cells with the highest iron levels in the brain which is linked to their elevated metabolic needs associated with the process of myelination. Unlike oligodendrocytes, astrocytes do not have a high metabolic requirement for iron. However, these cells are in close contact with blood vessel and have a strong iron transport capacity. In several pathological situations, changes in iron homoeostasis result in altered cellular iron distribution and accumulation and oxidative stress. In inflammatory demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis, reactive astrocytes accumulate iron and upregulate iron efflux and influx molecules, which suggest that they are outfitted to take up and safely recycle iron. In this review, we will discuss the participation of oligodendrocytes and astrocytes in CNS iron homeostasis. Understanding the molecular mechanisms of iron uptake, storage, and efflux in oligodendrocytes and astrocytes is necessary for planning effective strategies for iron management during CNS development as well as for the treatment of demyelinating diseases. https://journals.sagepub.com//fu/10.1177/1759091420962681 See more

18.01.2022 A prudent diet rich in fresh fruit, non-fried fish, whole grains, vegetables, and nuts may lower the likelihood of a relapse in people with a first demyelinating event, a major risk factor for multiple sclerosis (MS), a study in Australia suggests. While the researchers did not find a strong link between such a healthy diet and conversion from clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) to MS, their findings suggest this diet choice may help to prevent clinical progression. The stud...y, High Prudent diet factor score predicts lower relapse hazard in early multiple sclerosis, was published in the Multiple Sclerosis Journal. 07.01.2022 The NDIS has introduced changes to pricing and plans to ensure supports can continue to be delivered to participants during the coronavirus pandemic. These include new support coordination items, a temporary increase to price limits and changes to the cancellation policy. Three new support coordination items have been introduced to the support catalogue under Core Supports, Assistance with Daily Life. The new item numbers allow funds to be used more flexibly for access to sup...port coordination from either core or capacity building budgets. The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has increased price limits by 10 per cent for some critical supports. Participant plans are being automatically extended to ensure continued access to funding. From March 25, 2020, participants will be required to give 10 business days’ notice (up from two days) for a cancellation if they want to avoid paying the full fee for a cancelled service. Refer to the NDIS Price Guide for more information. From March 30, participants will be charged 100 per cent of the agreed support price if they cancel a service at short notice (up from 90 per cent). The NDIS is providing a one-off advance payment for eligible registered providers to assist in the expected temporary increase in costs to deliver supports due to the COVID-19 virus. See more

05.01.2022 PPE funding for NDIS participants in NSW and Victoria Reprint from FREEDOM TO LIVE NEWS Kymberly Martin August 5, 2020 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- NDIS participants in Victoria and New South Wales will be able to claim the cost of personal protective equipment (PPE), including masks, in what will be a temporary funding arrangement.... With community transmission of coronavirus evident in both states and in line with current health advice, NDIS Minister Stuart Robert said the government was acting to ensure participants more at risk are supported to access PPE and continue to receive their disability supports. NDIS participants who have face-to-face assisted daily living supports can flexibly use their existing NDIS funds to cover the cost of the PPE they need to keep themselves safe, the minister said. We know that participants who receive face-to-face supports may be at higher risk of transmission, with daily support from their workers regularly involving close physical contact. Participants can use an existing support item (Low Cost Disability-Related Health Consumables) to claim on the cost of PPE for the times their worker is with them. In Victoria and NSW, the ability to claim for the cost of PPE will be extended to providers allowing workers to continue delivering essential disability supports to NDIS participants. Participants living in their own home who test positive for COVID-19 and are required to self-isolate or quarantine will also be able to claim for related cleaning costs. Existing measures that provide additional funding for providers of Supported Independent Living (SIL) where there is a confirmed case of COVID-19, as announced on April 27, will also be extended. SIL providers will now also be able to claim for higher intensity supports to cover situations where there is a potential COVID-19 positive case of a participant and they are required to self-isolate or quarantine. The announcement is in addition to existing NDIS participant-focused coronavirus response measures, including offering alternatives for face-to-face planning meetings to participants, plan extensions for up to 24 months following review and flexible use of funds to purchase low cost assistive technology. Further information on funding of PPE can be found at http://www.ndis.gov.au
