22.01.2022 Exhibition Flashback: Peculiar Freedoms by Annelize Mulder Art was one of the first exhibitions we presented at new site of POP Gallery on Brunswick Street. The documentation of this body of work by Andy Keys is particularly moving given the current global crisis. _____________________________________________________... People often migrate in pursuit of a safer life. The commotion of the move abroad is followed by a sense of relief, breathing a bit easier. Except, what if past experiences hinder a complete surrender to this newly found refuge? In Peculiar Freedoms, Mulder seeks to uncover the power of memory to recoil her, and many South African migrants, into discomfort and vulnerability as a result of their origin. Threats of the past haunt the present as they trigger involuntary memories. Mulder is especially interested in the effect normalised violence has on those that choose to leave. The traces and prolonged exposure to everyday violence are often subtle, yet unmistakable. Peculiar Freedoms was presented at POP Gallery from 1 11 August 2018, and was accompanied with an opening event and an artist talk from Annelize Mulder.

You are encouraged to post final work and your processes to Facebook or Instagram using the tag #QCAatHome explore the hashtag to see what your fellow artists are up to. QCA at Home aims to bridge physical distance through making, sharing and connecting. QCA Galleries will be posting selections from the tagged work on our Instagram. 18.01.2022 On view at POP Gallery: Courting Time ‘The slow painter openly courts time as a partner in the process of distributing paint on a canvas.’ - Stephen Westfall, Slow Painting... Courting Time explores the slowness of painting: the idea that the time invested by the artist in making a work, and the viewer in experiencing it, becomes implicit in every painting. The marks on a painting’s surface record the persistence of the hand of the artist and become a visual representation of time. _________________________________________________ Exhibiting Artists: Annie O’Rourke Danielle Milne Darcy Williams David M. 10.01.2022 Were really enjoying the submissions to #QCAatHome! Keep using the hashtag, its great to see what is being produced outside the gallery walls and studios. QCA... at Home aims to bridge the current physical distances through making, sharing and connecting. Sunday Jemmott is a third-year Fine Art Student at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. She is undertaking a double major in Painting and Jewellery & Small Objects. How has your practice changed since being at home? My painting practice has become more ambitious in size. I think the confinement of my small home studio has made me excited by scale. My jewellery practice has found new avenues. With no access to the wonderful facilities we have at QCA, my work has moved away from metal and into decorative craft materials. I am enjoying using beading, pipe cleaners, clay and all things crafty to make wearable art. The colourful and whimsical nature of my work has proved very helpful in maintaining my attitude towards studio practice, despite the challenges of the new environment. What are you most looking forward to when able to return to campus? I cant wait to see my peers artworks in person. The screen really prohibits getting a proper impression of a work. I keep finding myself wanting to look closer or touch constantly! There is also something really special about watching your peers create and being a first-hand witness to their process. Im just itching to be back in a collaborative studio space. There is a small batch of these stunning dried fruit earrings for sale! You can follow and purchase Sundays work on Instagram at @sundaysartclub

10.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday Two years ago Michelle Vine presented her first solo exhibition at the Project Gallery. "Surrogates for Social Touch" was a different type of ...exhibition where viewers were invited to touch and play with the artworks. Every material the artist chose was included to feel and to create a tactile library of sorts. The exhibition was an expanded visual and textural exploration in spaces that are usually averse to touching. We invited visitors to the gallery and to loose their inhibitions in a space where absolutely everything was to be touched. Flash forward to two years later where we occupy a world of social distancing and touch appears to be on hold for a while. Michelle has been selected as one of ten artists at home by the Museum of Brisbane. Follow her journey on instagram @michelle.l.vine as she completes a six week creative residency from her home. Michelle will craft a series of experimental comfort objects. These objects will be small scale, soft sculptures made from foam, furry textures and commonly found household items. They will act as surrogates for the company and tactile care of others, at a time of touch taboo. Michelle will invite and guide her online audience to make their own comfort objects and enter into a dialogue about the important role of touch in our lives, especially at this time of physical distancing. #QCAatHome

09.01.2022 ON VIEW AT POP GALLERY: A SIGN OF THE TIMES 'A Sign of the Times' explores creative cultural identity in tumultuous times. Facing political and meteorological chaos, and the end of life as we know it by 2050, this group of artists will explore their diverse approaches to cultural and gender identity through a variety of media including painting, performance, digital media, sculpture, installation and jewellery. For these artists, the art gallery is the epicentre for the dev...elopment of ideas, where perceptions are challenged and new perspectives are formed. With this in mind, they question the role of art in activism, and how it can help us process and communicate our fear, confusion and dread, or be utilised as propaganda to persuade and push agendas. Featuring: Lucy Nguyen-Hunt, Emma Gardner, Julie Birks, Robert Andrews, Sarah Gillow, Rin Charlton, Louise Wruck, Chris Macpherson ____________________________ Exhibition Dates: 13 - 24 October Opening Hours: 10am to 4pm, Tuesday - Saturday Where: POP Gallery, 381 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, 4006

08.01.2022 OPEN AT POP GALLERY: VESTIGE This exhibition is part of Master of Arts in Visual Art (MAVA) graduate Jacques van der Merwes exploration into the relationship between the fragile nature of the body and the fading of memory. These works form a connection between the figure and the trace through the duration of time. They request viewers to consider the significance of forgetting and being in the now.... Some of these works draw from Marc Augs, the three forms of forgetting, Return, Suspense and Re-beginning. Requesting the audience to revisit to the work to experience the slow deterioration of the human form as the oscillating water in the glass containers have impact on the plaster of Paris, cottonwool, and bandages as medium. In turn, we become conscious of our transitory nature as humans and the value of forgetting. This is achieved through the trace, following theories of Aby Warburg, Walter Benjamin, and Georges Didi-Huberman. Jacques van der Merwes art explores the human condition through various mediums including drawing, painting, video, and sculpture. Working in materials such as plaster of Paris, wax, water, and bandages, he is particularly interested in the fading of memories, traces, entropy, and the immigration process. ________________________________________________ Exhibition Dates: 10 - 19 September Opening Times: 10am to 4pm, Tuesday - Saturday Where: POP Gallery, 381 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, 4006
