25.01.2022 Thank you to our ladies who contributed to our Police Remembrance Day morning tea. We have decided to donate the profits made to a local family who has recently had their son diagnosed with Leukemia. We will also be holding a Fundraising Day in the near future with our local art and craft community to assist the family with travel etc. More on that soon. Our soup kitchen run by our volunteers is increasing in numbers and our guests are such a happy and appreciative group. We... all sit down at our tables and talk and laugh and provide information from our members who are nurses, ambulance, local people in different jobs around town. A big Thankyou to our volunteers who make our soups each week, provide desserts and volunteer their time. Any donations are appreciated or if you would like to come down on a Monday night to the Hall - 5.30pm to 8pm you are most welcome. See more

25.01.2022 Update on our recent AGM meeting. Thank you to all who attended and also a thank you to our two Far Northern District Division ladies who attended and chaired our meeting. Our committee is as followings President - Ruth McCoombes Vice Presidents - Kylie White, Kati Guzsley Treasurer - Chris Muggleton Secretary - Ruth McCoombes... International Officer - Veronica O'Brien Hall Convenor - Ruth McCoombes Congratulations to all of the new committee and Thank you to our new members. Our soup kitchen is being held on a Monday night from 5.30 to 8pm. Slowly but surely we are having people come along. Any donations of vegetables would be greatly appreciated .We are busy in one way or another, so if you can't volunteer hours to be at the soup kitchen there are many options for you to help out. Baked cakes, desserts that we can freeze would be great. We have one lovely man who comes every week and insists on green tea! Even if it is a box of teabags you wish to provide, it will be greatly appreciated. We really need some ice-cream containers/similar sized containers if any one has any. Our grant is submitted to council re airconditioner to be installed at the hall as many patrons have suggested they would hire our hall more regularly if we had an airconditioner. My phone number is 0458693578 if you wish to contact me regarding donations, comments, ideas etc. We will be holding another meeting soon, will keep you updated. One idea to think about is QCWA holding a cooking/produce competition?? This will be discussed at our next meeting. See more

22.01.2022 These look good and she makes it look so easy !!

22.01.2022 QCWA is not just about scones, cakes and knitting. We are so much more and can be so much more. In an effort for more community engagement and increasing memberships, what would you like to see happening here? Be inventive and think about what our community needs! Please comment below!

22.01.2022 We would like to welcome our new members who have joined! Welcome to the QCWA! We will keep you posted with things to come!

22.01.2022 Since 1922 the QCWA has been a supportive fixture in city and country towns. From providing an organization for women to battle loneliness and isolation to this day and age where our Cooktown CWA are providing a service to a wide range of members of the community with our soup kitchen, personal hygiene packs, backpacks, pillows and linen for whoever is in need. These include not only women, but pensioners, homeless and families in need. As originally established as 'rest room...s' for women and their families to rest, feed children and meet other women I am proud to say that with the support of our local community, businesses and most of all the dedicated ladies that keep our soup kitchen going our local branch is able to reach out to everybody in the community and offer our support. Our goal is to open our doors more frequently to the public and we are working on that, but as usual life and work gets in the way, however our soup kitchen volunteers all work, most on shift work and still manage to provide this service to our local community. We love it, Monday soup kitchen night is very special and as we now have our regulars it is personal, we know who has regular tea or green and how many sugars!!! Thank you to everyone in the community who donates goods and a special thanks to those who support me every week in our kitchen and our other adventures like our legendary sausage sizzle for Santa in the Park!! Look forward to 2020. See more

20.01.2022 Our Soup Kitchen is on every Monday night from 5.30 to 8pm. Each week we have had more guests come along. Tonight we had seven people in for soup, bread, tea, coffee and dessert. It is a great feeling to see members of our community sitting at a table together, talking and laughing and enjoying our home made soup and dessert. Thankyou to our volunteers who are there every Monday night, making sure our Hall is open to those in need. Our Grant application for an airconditioner... in the hall has been submitted to Council. If approved, this will increase our hall hire in the Summer months. Friday 27th September is Police Remembrance Day. Our local station has asked if we could supply morning tea for them. If anyone would like to contribute baked goods, (cakes, slices, sausage rolls etc) towards this, it would be much appreciated. Also any homemade soups, vegetables towards making soups, ice cream containers, takeaway containers are always welcome. A big Thank You to the ladies who make our soups each week and volunteer their time to be at the soup kitchen every Monday night. Please PM me or drop containers into Seaview, Thank You. See more

20.01.2022 Our soup kitchen is on again Monday night 7-9pm, if anyone is able to spare some time to come along and help out.

19.01.2022 The Cooktown QCWA Branch has been running since 1937. Right now, we are in desperate need of a President, Secretary and active members or we fear we may have to close our doors! Members do not have to attend meetings, just help out on open days and fundraisers. We also encourage new ideas to keep our branch alive and reflective of events/activities our community wants and needs! But also to do this we need member support!!!!

17.01.2022 Happy International Women's Day! Remember, you are amazing!

17.01.2022 Hi ladies, First a big thankyou to our volunteers at our Monday night soup kitchen who provide an awesome meal and dessert to members of our community who come along and enjoy good food and a great social atmosphere. Our numbers are increasing every week. It is a very rewarding and interesting experience to sit down with our guests and talk and laugh! A special thankyou to the cooking class from Holy Spirit college for your efforts, also to those who have donated produce to o...ur soup kitchen. We have also received donations of pillows, cushions and blankets from the Cooktown community and St Vinnies, which are very much appreciated. Our recent grant application to have an airconditioner installed at the hall has been approved by council. Great news! If anyone is available on Saturday 7th December to help out, QCWA is cooking and serving a sausage sizzle for Sunset with Santa. Also volunteers are needed to serve lollies and drinks. Time will be between 4.30/6pm. If anyone is interested in helping out let me know. See more

16.01.2022 Thanks to all who attended our last meeting. So many great ideas and enthusiasm. Discussion included getting support from Gungarde to establish a community garden in our backyard, finalizing our birthing kits, quotes coming in for an airconditioner to be put in with a council grant, and our soup kitchen is underway with our first one being Monday 19th August. We are also going to offer a small pack of toiletries on our soup kitchen night (shampoo, conditioner, soap, toothbrush and toothpaste). Our next meeting will be Monday 12th of August. This will be our AGM meeting, there are committee vacancies and as always new members and anyone who would like to come along and see what QCWA is all about are welcome.

16.01.2022 QCWA Cooktown AGM, Wednesday 15th July 2020, 5.30 pm at the hall in Charlotte St. Everyone is welcome, whether you just want to come along and see what we get up to!! Or you wish to become a member. Hope to see you there.

16.01.2022 Hi everyone, I hope you are all keeping safe and well. An update on our activities at our Cooktown hall, limited as they are. We are still hosting our soup kitchen in accordance to government and health rules. We are allowed to continue as we are providing a service to the homeless and those in need of support. Although we can't have sit down meals in the hall we are able to provide takeaways at our door and home deliveries. Last Monday night we had 20 orders for a main co...urse and dessert, mostly home deliveries. It was good to catch up and check on a few of our regulars, make sure they are ok and to provide them with a couple of nights meals. Our local Council health officer is on board and keeps me up to date with the everchanging rules and regulations. Thank You Michelle. We have also done a bit of gardening (as we all are) at the front of the hall. A bit of pruning, new plants planted and a pine bark mulch over the new garden. A couple of hours hard work but a huge improvement on the previous barren earth!! As always a huge thankyou to the volunteers who contribute and cook for our soup kitchen. Some have actually surprised themselves and realized they can step out of the comfort zone and bake or make something new As always donations of produce, baking, main meals etc are appreciated. We do alot of our main meals in a slow cooker which we can then put into containers and freeze. So if anyone has time on their hands...! As always, my post is long and far and few between, as I tend to get sidetracked with work, my garden and my animals and not technology and social media!!! Best Wishes to you and your families and loved ones. See more

16.01.2022 Special Thank you to our honorary CWA member George who once again put in a huge effort today !!!! Plus a huge thank you to everyone who volunteered or donated goods today. We are open Sunday 9-12pm - volunteers are appreciated, welcome and needed !!!! Cheers ... Cherryl Perry See more

15.01.2022 MEETING DATE CHANGE - Due to increased hall hire, prior commitments for committee members and members, the meeting has been changed to Friday 26th July, 5pm at the CWA hall.

15.01.2022 Hi everyone, hope you are all well. Cooktown is certainly busy with tourists now our border has opened. Our soup kitchen is going stronger than ever with our numbers increasing to up to 35 - 40 meals on a Monday night. We have been providing takeaways at the door and also doing home deliveries. Good news is that now restrictions have eased and our Covid safe plan is in place, we are able to welcome 15 people to sit down in our hall. This allows our guests who frequent the sou...p kitchen to once again sit down together and enjoy social interaction and companionship. The one positive thing Covid has brought home is an understanding in the community of just how much our soup kitchen is beneficial and needed for those on their own and lonely, those who are struggling and the general public who just want some good food, company and laughter. Personally, I have realized just how many people are in the community who are "home bound" and we have decided that we will continue home deliveries to them. They are so appreciative and it is heartwarming to be able to provide them with our great food and hear a yarn or two in return! A special thankyou to Yvonne Dighton from Mareeba for her generous donation of $100 to our soup kitchen. Yvonne cooks meals for several pensioners in Mareeba, her personal soup kitchen! Due to Covid she hasn't been able to do that, so she has helped us out with her donation. Thank You Yvonne Also a big Thank You to Jamie Powell from Endeavour Christian College who won $200 in the Australian Association of Christian Schools poetry competition and donated her prize to our soup kitchen. Once again a long catch up post!! Hope you are all well, Best Wishes. See more

14.01.2022 After speaking with some people around town who have commented that the soup kitchen times are too late. Earlier in the day might be more successful. So we will try 5.30/ 6 to about 8 pm, tonight.

14.01.2022 Coles RAISED OVER $2.1 MILLION FOR THE QUEENSLAND DROUGHT APPEAL In just two months, Coles and its customers have contributed more than $2,100,000 Million to t...he Queensland Country Women’s Association to help drought-affected farmers. With Coles matching every donation dollar-for-dollar during August and September, customers have helped to raise more than $7,171,400 million nationally for the CWA to help drought-affected communities with household and family expenses. In addition, Coles pledged $5 million in grants or interest-free loans from the Coles Nurture Fund for farmers who have a project which will help them to combat drought in the future. Coles State General Manager Jerry Farrell said Coles is overwhelmed by the generosity of local shoppers across Queensland who have shown their support for Australian farming communities by donating at Coles checkouts. Thanks to their generous donations and fundraising efforts, more than $2.1 million will go back to supporting local farmers, growers and producers who are experiencing hardship as a result of the drought.

13.01.2022 Our regular Monday night soup kitchen was again popular! We are changing the menu a bit and have added curried sausages and rice as well as soup to our menu. Also awesome homemade desserts that our volunteers make. We have also enlisted the home economics class from the local Holy Spirit school who made us a soup and are making us another soup and dessert next week. The girls are also keen to volunteer on a Monday night with serving. So good to see community spirit and suppor...t beginning to happen in our CWA hall. We knew our soup kitchen wouldn't happen overnight but thanks to a few dedicated volunteers and members we have been open regularly, opened our hearts to a great new family of friends and I think I speak for all if I say it is such a rewarding and heart warming experience to sit down, share a meal, laughs and conversation with such a great bunch of people. We are open every Monday night from 5.30pm to 8pm. Look forward to seeing you there. We are open for the whole community See more

05.01.2022 Hi everyone, apologies for so long between posts but as we all know life and work often get in the way! First of all, our airconditioner is currently being installed at the hall thanks to a Grant from Council. This will make our hall a lot more comfortable for us when we use the hall and also for those that hire the hall for functions. Our soup kitchen continues very Monday night from 5.30 to 8pm. We now have a few regulars there every week as well as other members of the com...munity who drop in. I cannot thank the ladies enough who attend every Monday night so our doors are always open and to those in the community and local businesses who contribute. We have been nominated for the Australia Day Award for Group volunteer of the Year. Awards night is at PCYC Friday 24th January if anyone would like to attend. We are also supporting the RSL Australia Day fundraiser this Sunday. RSL Cooktown donate $400 every month towards our soup kitchen and we appreciate their support. We are setting up a table and selling Anzac biscuits and Lamingtons with all proceeds going to the fire victims down South. If anyone would like to contribute biscuits or lamingtons your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Also if you have free time on Sunday, come to the RSL and either help out on our stall or just have a great day out for Australia Day. Any contributions for our soup kitchen or Australia Day can be dropped into Seaview reception or message me and I can pick up. Thank you, every little bit helps to support our community and others who at the moment need all the help they can get See more

02.01.2022 Hi everyone, hope you are all well on these chilly nights!! An update on our ongoing soup kitchen. We haven't missed a Monday night. We find we are needed more than ever! Thanks to our great group of volunteers and donations we are keeping very busy. At present we are providing 30 to 35 meals every Monday night. About a third of these are takeaway at the door the rest are phone orders and regular weekly home deliveries. We have recently received a donation of three kilograms... of meat from Mossman meats who deliver to Cooktown each week towards our Soup Kitchen donations. Between this and a monthly monetary donation from Cooktown RSL we are able to provide our service. Due to Covid restrictions we are not receiving income from hall hire, fundraising etc. Our community needs us now more than ever. Especially in our lockdown situation. We can assist in many other ways. No job too big or too small!! And a big thank you for your support. If you feel like cooking or making a dessert, or even have produce or containers spare, contact Ruth 0458693578. 02.01.2022 The Queensland Country Women's Association is the state's most widespread and largest women's group, with thousands of members and hundreds of branches, from the city to remote areas. We are an active community of women, who, together, improve the lives of people living in regional, rural and remote Queensland. We are mums, grandmothers, single or married; we are women employed in the home or workforce; we are just like you. We are renowned for our great home cooks and our ha...ndcrafts-but the QCWA is so much more than that. It's about friendship; about community; its about connection. Our recent International Womens Day held at Nature's Powerhouse raised over $3000 for our farmers. A barn dance fundraiser for our farmers is an idea we are working on.
