22.01.2022 I couldn't have put it better myself: ". . . a balanced exchange of ideas, as well as consideration for others emotional states and beliefs, requires a proficient knowledge of each others native language. In other words, we need truly bilingual exchanges, in which all involved know the language of the other. So, it is just as important for English native speakers to be able to converse with others in their languages." 17.01.2022 Icelandic We have never been asked to provide a language service in Icelandic and it is becoming less likely that we will. Only 340,000 people speak Icelandic and a report from The Guardian discusses how and why less common languages are being threatened by the almost entirely English digital world. This is a very thought provoking article and raises questions not just about language and culture, but about our own identities in both the digital world and the real world.... https://www.theguardian.com//icelandic-language-battles-th

15.01.2022 Here is a great resource from the good folks at SBS. It is a cultural atlas with a great deal of information that illustrates the cultural diversity we have here in Australia, as well as around the globe. Enjoy! https://culturalatlas.sbs.com.au/intro

15.01.2022 Here is some interesting reading for your long weekend. It seems that supercomputers are beginning to be able to translate lesser known languages, about which linguists and translators know virtually nothing. Maybe this can help preserve the diversity of language and associated culture. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2017//171121121414.htm

13.01.2022 A language previously unknown to linguists has been discovered in SE Asia. Here's an interesting quote from the article: "An estimated 6,000 languages are currently spoken in the world. About 80 per cent of the world's population speak one of the major world languages, while approximately 20 per cent speak one of the 3 600 smaller languages. Researchers believe that about half of the world's languages will be extinct 100 years from now."... https://www.sciencedaily.com/releas/2018//180206100349.htm
