25.01.2022 COVID-19 at QLRC Dear Patients, Colleagues and Families The last few weeks have been challenging and we have even harder times ahead of us. We hope that you are managing to keep yourselves and your families safe. We also understand that you are busy consulting and managing the COVID situation and do not have time for non urgent orthopaedic issues.... We are trying to support our patients as best we can, particularly now that the government has cancelled all upcoming elective surgery in order to preserve our supplies of PPE. We will be contacting all our patients due for surgery in the near future to ensure that their pain relief is adequate and that their non operative management is optimised. We are encouraging our current patients to contact our rooms for phone and online consults if they have any queries or concerns. We hope this will help to alleviate some of the stress you may experience. Please do not hesitate to contact our rooms if there is anything further you feel we can do in order to assist you. If you are interested in education whilst at home, we are going to continue running educational sessions via webinar during this time. Please visit www.qldlrc.com.au for further information if you are interested in Paediatric Orthopaedics and Limb Reconstruction!

24.01.2022 Dinner with one of the greatest thinkers and pioneers in Patellofemoral surgery. Dr John Fulkerson has been responsible for the development of the Fulkerson osteotomy, a mainstay in the treatment of patellofemoral pain and instability. Thank you also to Drs Sabrina Strickland, Andreas Gomoll, Beth Shubin Stein and Dan Green at HSS for sharing their approach to surgery as well as their hospitality. I look forward to continuing to discuss current research surrounding the patellofemoral joint at the International Patellofemoral Support Group in Banff 2019!

19.01.2022 Bow Legs or Knocked Knees The biggest problem we experience is that these kids often come to us too late, at the wrong time. Parents and clinicians are unsure as to when to refer, when to operate or when not to. This can lead to severe long term physical, but also emotional and social problems. This presentation will help parents as well as clinicians know how best to help their children or patients who have bow legs or knocked knees. https://zoom.us//ztRoL7f291lIe5Hz5xDzBLw5Rbrmeaa81Skf-_ZYy

18.01.2022 The IOC consensus statement on paediatric ACL injury raises some important issues in the management of our injured young athletes. We would like to emphasis the recommendation that our kids rehabilitating from this injury do not return to pivoting sports until at least 12 months post injury, and most importantly have achieved the return to sport criteria. At the QLRC we do offer growth plate sparing reconstruction techniques for appropriate patients. We strongly recommend that any child undergoing ACL reconstruction be followed up until skeletal maturity to ensure they do not experience a growth plate injury. If this does occur, we are more than capable of managing it using guided growth techniques.

14.01.2022 It has come to our attention that given the recent uncertainty regarding the events unfolding about CV 19, many patients are concerned about attending the hospital environment due to the possibility of disease transmission. We wanted to let you know about the measures we are taking at QLRC to try and protect our patients and their families from unnecessary risk. At this point in time we are asking that all patients and their families use hand sanitiser upon entering and lea...ving the rooms. We will have gloves and masks available should patients - particularly the elderly - wish to take further precautions. We have also taken the step of offering a telehealth style consult if patients wish, however the Medicare rebate may not be applicable. As it may not be possible to perform an adequate physical exam, a further consult may be required. If the issue can be resolved without this, then hopefully it will have been of benefit. Kind regards Dr Sheanna Maine and the QLRC Team

01.01.2022 Dr Maine was fortunate to speak to a international group of patellofemoral surgeons about her current research into patellar instability. She thanks all the surgeons at the University of Minnesota for their incredible hospitality. It was an amazing experience."

01.01.2022 Dr Maine had the recent privilege of presenting and instructing at the annual Australian Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction Society (ALLARS) meeting in Sydney. This society brings together reconstruction surgeons from around Australia and New Zealand to share their knowledge and discuss difficult cases where there is little evidence upon which treatment can be based. Our understanding of limb lengthening techniques continues to improve and we particularly look forward to a new lengthening nail which will allow patients to weight beat while undergoing their lengthening procedures.
