25.01.2022 This is an amazing local charity - please consider a visit

24.01.2022 Lately, we have seen an increase in tension headaches. If you have noticed you are more headachy since wearing a mask became mandatory, here are our top tips for you. Make time in your day to breath deeply, this sounds obvious, but it is essential. Even better if you can take your mask off and breath quality oxygen (adhering to current recommendations and ensuring the safety of yourself and others). ... Ensure you are drinking plenty of water and plan times into your day to achieve this. If you are suffering with consistent headaches, find the root cause rather than just masking it. If we can help in any way, please feel free to get in touch.

24.01.2022 Y O L L I How would you describe the way you treat clients? Firm, but with a deep level of understanding and empathy, enabling me to be gentle when needed. I have affectionately been nicknamed the Princess of Pain on occasion.... *photo taken pre-COVID

23.01.2022 Monday lunch We had an Indonesian inspired (oh how I wish) salad for lunch yesterday. Steamed then baked potatoes, beans, corn, assorted raw veg, soft boiled eggs, heaps of herbs from our kitchen garden and a lovely satay sauce.

23.01.2022 CRICKET TALK Batting is fun, but can be long and tiring, particularly those spending extended time out in the middle (definitely not me!). The stance position whilst waiting for the bowler is relatively crouched, putting plenty of toll on the lower back, front and back of the thighs, and that’s before taking into account the swing of the bat! Here are some simple warm up techniques to prevent that painful waddle the next morning... 1. Stretching (*eye roll* surprise, surprise) I know I harp on about stretching, but it is super necessary to warm up those muscles for any activity, especially sustained, repetitive action! A simple stretching routine to target these muscle groups can be seen in the video below 2. Run throughs (dynamic) mimicking running between the wickets at half pace, warming up those lower levers after a good stretch 3. Gluteal bridges a simple warm up that gets those glute muscles ready to withstand making a 100!

22.01.2022 Casey shares his pathway in becoming an Osteopath. ‘As a child I always had a keen interest in the sports & fitness (that hasn't changed). As a teen, such interest forged the pathway to subjects at school such as Health, physical education & even biology, enhancing my interest in how the body functioned. At the same time, I managed to have a few minor setbacks injury related on the football field, where I ended up at a family friends Physio clinic sparking further interest. I...n all honesty, I hadn't even heard the term Osteopathy whilst progressing through high school, until I sat down with the careers advisor in year 11, where I had stated my interests. Following on, I went home, did my research and enjoyed the concept of helping people in various different ways, whether that be treatment or exercise program related. After getting to the end of high school, I was fortunate enough to be accepted into Osteopathy at Victoria University and loved every minute of it (apart from some stressful exams!).’ See more

19.01.2022 Feet are the shock absorbers of the lower limb, making sure they are mobile and able to cope with the daily load is integral for injury prevention and great function. Here’s a really thorough mobility routine by Kit Laughlin that’s great to keep your feet moving and make them happy with every step.

19.01.2022 The third and final exercise from Casey to help increase mobility in the upper spine.

18.01.2022 L A U R A Laura explains her pathway to becoming an osteopath. I always said that I was going to do a massage course when I finished uni. I loved science and nature and was leaning in the direction of environmental engineering or something like that. I’d never heard of osteopathy until I was halfway through Year 12 and EVERYTHING hurt from spending so much time slouched over my homework. I’d seen a lot of people, including the local horse guy who was apparently a muscular w...izard, with no real success. A friend recommended I see her osteopath. And I said Your what?? I went, the osteo did this amazing thing to my ribs and I was hooked in a second. When I then looked into osteo further, what I fell in love with was the artistry within the science. It brought together what I loved and what I was good at, which was fortunate, because as I’ve evolved as a practitioner, it’s the art of every individual that really excites me. In hindsight, I picked the most complex massage course I could find as my career pathway. In no small part, this is due to growing up seeing my dad suffer for my whole life with chronic low back pain and wanting to help people like him. I have seen firsthand the impact that pain has on individuals and families.

14.01.2022 Wishing everyone in the Quay Osteo community a very Merry Christmas today x

14.01.2022 D E E (receptionist) The Surf Coast is home. I feel strongly connected to the natural environment here and take great joy in exploring it's rugged beauty. When I'm away I literally miss the ocean, the cliffs, the heathlands and the forests. When I return it's like my whole body takes a deep breath. This place is also home to the most supportive and loving community. The friends I have made here over the last 12 years have become family. I simply couldn't imagine living anywhere else. I am grateful to live on Wadawurrung and deeply respect the traditional owners of this land.

12.01.2022 Hi there, I've been working on something a little different lately. An idea that has been insistently thumping me on the shoulder. A call to put some positivity out in the world. If you're interested in learning more, this is my invitation to check out the video or details below.... Laura x ... COMING HOME: (Re)Connecting to Ourselves and Possibility The foundation for hope, compassion and empathy comes from our heart. However, during times of change or upheaval, it can be hard to rise above the undercurrent of fear. As humans, we crave certainty, we seek it - consciously or subconsciously. The thing is, in unusual times there isn't a playbook for where certainty can be found, and our tendency is to look for it outside ourselves. For most people, 2020 has been challenging. These 10 Days are a gentle journey back to ourselves and our heart - it's a return to our home. Utilising my understanding of the body as osteopath, and my experience in developing self-awareness (personally and for clients), this program has been designed to guide us reconnect and soften, release tension, and find our internal strength and direction. When we can find trust and certainty within ourselves, it becomes easier to accept "what is" in the external world. It becomes possible to feel centred, grounded and to rest, despite the storms around us. Join me to reconnect with a sense of excitement for what's possible and the peace of coming back home to ourselves, with a greater sense of who we are and what we need. .... WHAT TO EXPECT: Over these 10 Days you will be guided with a daily video in the facebook group providing details for each days exploration. Videos range from 5-15 minutes and you may need an additional 10 minutes to complete an exercise each day (at your discretion). In the mix, we'll be delving into empathy, perspective, patience, generosity, values and forgiveness - all designed to help us sink back into ourselves and embrace our uniqueness. If you miss a day, the group will remain open for an additional week to give our community time to catch up.

12.01.2022 Y O L L I 'I believe in health and creating the space for it. The human body strives for heath at every turn, yet musculoskeletal tightness and imbalance (on an emotional and physical level) can often hinder the flow. As an osteopath, we simply act as a catalyst, clearing the path and enabling the body to find harmony and health.'

10.01.2022 Sunny day lunch - This was delicious and easy on a hot summer day. I made some beetroot slaw (raw beetroot, green apple, red onion, carrot, lemon juice and olive oil) yesterday and marinated up some veg and haloumi in olive oil, oregano and lemon zest. Served simply for lunch with hommus, felafel & Greek yoghurt.

10.01.2022 So excited to group classes opening back up. #supportlocal

07.01.2022 'I am open and curious and like to look at things from multiple perspectives. I'm also a hopeful person, so I feel like there must be a way that my training can be useful to clients - be it Approach A, B...or K, a referral to another practitioner I trust. Believing that someone can get better is a powerful starting point. I love that osteopathy gives me such a variety of tools and ways to approach the same condition'.

07.01.2022 Monday lunch has become a regular date for Laura, Casey and I. Yesterday I made a salad using some extra roasted veggies from our family dinner Sunday. So roasted pumpkin, red onion & beetroot, some fabulous salad leaves, herbs and spring onion from our kitchen garden and a dressing made from mint, coriander, tahini, Greek yoghurt and lemon juice. Served with a spinach and cheese borek (courtesy of Peachs) Was easy and delicious

06.01.2022 From the whole team here at Quay Osteo we would like to thanks our community for their ongoing support. We are continually humbled that you trust us to care for the health of you and your families. Wishing you all a new year full of health and happiness.

05.01.2022 WHAT IS AN OSTEO? Osteopathy is a hands-on form of manual therapy that was founded by an American doctor in 1874. The philosophy of the profession is that the body is a unit. Treatment is holistic, considering not only the focal complaint, but other regions that are influencing the injury or are suffering as a secondary reaction to it. For example, if you tell an osteopath about your neck pain, they will first check your pelvis and low back to ensure that you have a stable starting point for your spine and they will enquire if the neck pain is resulting in headaches. #valuingyourhealth

02.01.2022 CRICKET TALK: BOWLERS I think we all wish we were as nimble as this little bowler! When it comes to the nature of most bowling actions, there is a lot of stress placed through the entire body. If you aren’t fully warmed up, there is a far greater risk of injury. Here are a few simple tips to making sure you are performing optimally... 1.Warm up properly!! Everything from head to toe, particularly back and shoulders, 2.Practise run!! Run through your technique a few times at 60% and 80% prior to going full tilt, this allows the muscles and joints to warm up functionally, getting ready for the real deal! 3.Work with a coach!! If something just isn’t quite right or you are feeling slightly off, and you’re repeating the same action 100 times per session, chances are you will be sore. Get someone to watch and critique you technique and make sure you get it right, trust me you’ll be thankful! - Casey

01.01.2022 The ‘Jaw Clenchers’ Headache The jaw, formally known as the TMJ is the joint between your mandible and temporal bones. It commonly creates what’s known as a secondary headache, or a headache that is caused by jaw dysfunction. Particularly throughout the chaotic year of 2020 (say no more), TMJ headaches are more common than ever due to their close relationship with stress.... There is plenty your Osteo can do, with a variety of soft tissue & mobility techniques to get the pain under control. If you are suffering something that seems vaguely familiar, or any form of headache at all, come in and get it checked out! For the meantime, here are a few pain relief tips you could try at home: *Gentle jaw release: Using your finger pads placed on the back end of the jaw under the ears, pushing your teeth forward whilst gently pushing through your fingers, as if you are giving yourself an underbite *Breathing exercises to act as a destress method, stress and jaw teeth clenching go hand in hand *Jaw mobility side to side, up and down in controlled manner *Watch what you eat for the time being It seems obvious, but if jaw pain, chewing something tough will not be your friend.
