24.01.2022 Great memories of the Mahler 8 performances of July 2015

22.01.2022 Project B9 In the rehearsal of 30 January the focus will fall on "Wach auf" from Wagners "Die Meistersinger von Nrnberg". Here is a little bit of historical context, followed by a brief summary of the final scene of the last act (this piece is right at the very end of the opera). Die Meistersinger von Nrnberg (The Master-Singers of Nuremberg) is a music drama (or opera) in three acts, written and composed by Richard Wagner. It is among the longest operas commonly performed...Continue reading

20.01.2022 Project B9 The morning after the concert... I dont know about the rest of the group, but I am still on a high! The buzz will linger for a long while. Congratulations to everyone on a spectacular performance! Concerts are always over in a flash, but the whole B9 experience, starting at the first rehearsal last year through to the final notes of the concert, was something I am sure will be treasured and valued by everyone involved.... I am so proud to be part of this awesome team. Bravi! Safe travels home. < Andre > #b9 #QFC #chorusmistress #vmacademy

20.01.2022 Project B9 Yesterday marked the start of rehearsals for the team who will travel to Singapore in March 2016 to participate in a performance of three major works: - Symphony No 9 (Choral) by Beethoven - "Lakes Awake at Dawn" by riks Eenvalds... - "Wacht auf" from Wagners opera Die Meistersinger von Nrnberg Sixteen singers were in attendance, and we rehearsed parts of the first two works listed above. Good old Wagner will get a turn at the next rehearsal. Considering it was our first run through these pieces, it went very well and we made a strong start. If any one of us was not very excited yet about this project, today would have sorted that out! Wow, what a great opportunity to learn and perform these stunning compositions!! I will be writing status updates for this project here on a regular basis, and also add some interesting facts and anecdotes to provide some context. And hopefully also make you smile now and then. :-) Beethovens last completed symphony is very well known, and I dont believe there are many people on this planet who havent heard the "Ode to Joy" from the last movement in some form or another. This symphony is regarded by many as one of the greatest compositions in all of classical music, and its difficult not to agree with that view. The Ode to Joy has been used in many films and advertisements, has served as "anthems" for major sporting events, and so on. Ignorant people may not know what it is, but they will recognise the tune. Do we know how Beethoven came up with this sensational Ode to Joy tune? No, we dont know for sure, but according to Robert Gutman, Mozarts K. 222 Offertory in D minor, "Misericordias Domini", written in 1775, contains a melody that foreshadows "Ode to Joy". Just listen to the music at the 1:00 and 2:00 marks of this recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEBYufTXJQk Could it be? You be the judge. What we know for sure is that on 7 May 1824 the world heard this glorious symphony for the first time when it premiered in Vienna. Beethoven was the first major composer who used the human voice on the same level as instruments in a symphony, even if in only the last of its four movements. Other composers followed, and apart from the use of a chorus and/or solo singers in a symphony, symphonic works by composers like Brahms, Bruckner, Dvok and even Bartk were directly influenced by Beethovens Choral Symphony. How privileged are we to be able to learn, and later perform this work in Singapore with the Orchestra of the Music Makers under the direction of the wonderful maestro Chan Tze Law. #b9 #QFC #chorusmistress #vmacademy

20.01.2022 Project B9 What people thought of Beethoven's 9th Symphony... a small selection of varying reactions since its premiere in 1824: ... "...the effect was indescribably great and magnificent, jubilant applause from full hearts was enthusiastically given the master, whose inexhaustible genius revealed a new world to us and unveiled never-before-heard, never-imagined magical secrets of the holy art!..." -- a Leipzig critic at the 1824 premiere "We find Beethoven's Ninth Symphony to be precisely one hour and five minutes long; a fearful period indeed, which puts the muscles and lungs of the band and the patience of the audience to a severe trial..." -- The Harmonicon, London, 1825 "On several occasions in this work we will be drawing attention to clusters of notes which cannot possibly be described as chords, and we will be forced to admit that the reason for these anomalies escapes us completely." -- composer Hector Berlioz, 1803-1869 "The alpha and omega is Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, marvelous in the first three movements, very badly set in the last. No one will ever approach the sublimity of the first movement, but it will be an easy task to write as badly for voices as in the last movement. And supported by the authority of Beethoven, they will all shout: "That's the way to do it..." -- composer Giuseppe Verdi, 1878 "There is nothing in the Bible greater in inspiration than Beethoven's Ninth Symphony..." -- George Bernard Shaw, 1856-1950 "im a gurl who loves heavy metal but this song is great lol he's a pure deaf genius." -- MizFroggy888, YouTube "I love how the chois has to sit there untill the end... It's like Beethovens joke lol." -- Mag3dufool, YouTube Source: http://blog.oregonlive.com//2008/09/beethovens_ninth_kicks #b9 #QFC #chorusmistress #vmacademy

19.01.2022 Project B9 Beethovens deafness Beethoven was deaf for the last 12 or 13 years of his life. His loss of hearing started around 1796 when he was only 26 years old. He suffered from a severe form of tinnitus, ... a "ringing" in his ears that made it hard for him to hear music. The cause of Beethovens deafness is unknown, but it possibly resulted from typhus, auto-immune disorders (such as systemic lupus erythematosus), and even his habit of immersing his head in cold water to stay awake. His ability to hear deteriorated over the years, but up to the age of 42 (in 1812) he could still hear music and speech reasonably well. The next two years things went downhill very quickly and by 1814 he was almost completely deaf, until his death in 1827. It is difficult to comprehend how someone who could not hear managed to compose music like this (Symphony No. 9, 3rd movement): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2aEikKiGcc #b9 #QFC #chorusmistress #vmacademy

13.01.2022 Project B9 Under threatening storm clouds, today's rehearsal of the three pieces for next year's Singapore concert went very well. I suspect the weather gods might have heard some Beethoven and Wagner going on, and promptly produced celebratory stormy weather for dramatic effect. :-) It is evident that we are getting to grips now with the Eenvalds "Lakes Awake at Dawn", and it sounds good already! It is a most interesting and beautiful work, and how lucky are we to have th...is opportunity to add it to our repertoire! Wagner got his first turn today, and oh WOW WOW WOW, what a sensational piece of music is "Wacht auf"!!! Have a look at this wonderful performance (this is the version we are rehearsing), and then I challenge you to say that you didn't get goose bumps!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vC-HI8x7Xg The Beethoven 9 closed our session today and a great time was had by all. We had 19 singers in attendance this time. Those who missed out today will be able to collect their Wagner scores at Monday's QFC rehearsal. Hopefully everyone got home safely!! This was the last B9 rehearsal for 2015, and we will continue on Sat 30 January 2016. Monday evening QFC rehearsals for the Christmas and other concerts will continue as per the published schedules. #b9 #QFC #chorusmistress #vmacademy

09.01.2022 Project B9 Lakes Awake at Dawn Along with Beethovens Symphony No. 9 and Wagners "Wacht auf!", the QFC will also be performing "Lakes Awake at Dawn" by Latvian composer riks Eenvalds in Singapore next year. Here are interesting bits of information about the work:... Its Latvian title is "Ezeri atmostas rtausm". It is a work for mixed choir (SSAATTBB) and symphony orchestra, and is appoximately 10 minutes long. Commissioned by Boston Symphony Orchestra and The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (in celebration of the work of their Music Director, Andris Nelsons), it was composed in 2014. The lyrics are by Inga Abele and texts compiled by the composer after various writings on lakes, with an English translation by Edita Page. It received its world premiere performance late November 2014 (I could not find information about the exact date and location of the first performance), with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andris Nelsons. Two further performances were given in Birmingham in June 2015 by the The City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Andris Nelsons. Reviews of the premiere performance: "Striking, lush, cinematic, lingering and luscious." ~ Geoffrey Wieting of the Boston Musical Intelligencer "The BSO would do well to bring it back in the near future." ~ Keith Powers of The Patriot Ledger "A fine performance... it whetted ones appetite for more exploratory programming of music from Nelsonss home country and its surroundings." ~ Jeremy Eichler of The Boston Globe "Beautifully atmospheric and fluid, this tightly organized piece strikes an astute balance between singers and orchestra. Eenvalds is a major voice, and Lakes Awake at Dawn is a lovely addition to the canon. I hope to hear much more of his music in Boston." ~ Cashman Kerr Prince of Arts Fuse More information about riks Eenvalds is following soon. #b9 #QFC #chorusmistress #vmacademy

08.01.2022 Project B9 Who is riks Eenvalds? He was born in Riga, Latvia, on Australia Day 1977. We love him for that!... He is a composer of symphonies, chamber works, songs, operas, instrumental pieces, concertos, but it is his numerous brilliant choral compositions that marks him as one of todays most sought-after composers. His 10 years as a singer in the State Choir "Latvija" (2002-2011) may have something to do with that... He obtained his Masters Degree in Composition in 2004 from the Latvian Academy of Music, where he studied under Professor Selga Mence (another fine choral composer from the Baltics). He is a member of The Latvian Composers Union - an organization which unites professional Latvian composers and musicologists, and aims to promote of Latvian professional music, foster research, defend members interests, incite opportunities for growth, as well as raise the prestige of members creative work in Latvia and worldwide. Sorry, ladies... but he is married and has four children. Some of his compositions appear on recordings from Trinity College Choir, Cambridge on the Hyperion label and from VOCES8 on Decca Classics. He has received multiple awards for his works, documented on his web page - http://www.eriksesenvalds.com/ - please have a look.
