25.01.2022 It was International Day of the Midwife this week! To keep the celebrations rolling, heres a little shout out to the midwives we work closely with at the QLD Milk Bank. From #RBWH, #CabooltureHospital, #Redcliffe Hospital and the Gold Coast University Hospital - GCUH, these wonderful midwives make sure our milk gets to the babies who need it most and ensure families who receive our donations are supported in the process. Thank you for everything you do. Wed be simply lost without you!

24.01.2022 Beautiful mum Jacque recently donated over 20L of her milk to the QLD Milk Bank in one of the most difficult times of her life. Her son Edison (pictured) was diagnosed with hypoplastic left heart syndrome at 16 weeks gestation and lived 10 precious days after his birth. After saying goodbye to their beloved Eddy, Jacque made the selfless decision to donate her milk. She said that donating gave her a sense of purpose and was a way of reciprocating the kindness she and her fa...mily received from others. Thank you for finding the strength in your heartbreak to help other babies, Jacque. You are one incredible Mum! Jacque shares her journey on her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/Edisonsbrokenheart/

24.01.2022 Twins Henry and Francesca, along with parents Caroline and Sam, have finally farewelled the RBWH Neonatology team almost four months on from their dramatic, 16-weeks-early arrival, more than 1000km from their Sydney home!

24.01.2022 Say hi to Timothy! Timothy is the Quality and Safety Coordinator at the Queensland Milk Bank. As breast milk is considered a food, he manages the Food Safety Program which involves extensive testing and audits. Only the best for our #qldmilkbankbabies.

24.01.2022 Weve accepted our 1000th donor at the Queensland Milk Bank! That person is amazing new mum Shannon and she happens to share an extra special connection to #RBWH, the home of our Queensland Milk Bank. Not only did Shannon have her baby Holly at RBWH, she was born there too and now works in the Nuclear Medicine department. Thank YOU to all 1000 of our donor mums who have provided life-enhancing milk to tiny babies right across the country since 2012.

24.01.2022 When you donate, you could be helping someone like Kate and her baby Quinn. Kate was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer at 28 weeks into her pregnancy. And at just 32 weeks, she welcomed baby Quinn into the world just before starting the treatment that would save her life. She was able to express some of her liquid gold before treatment commenced, but she relied on our donors to supply Quinn with the six litres of milk he needed during his four weeks in the Special Care N...ursery. Two years on, wonder woman Kate is celebrating one year of being in remission and Quinn is a happy and healthy boy. Kate says thats thanks to our donor mums

24.01.2022 Distance was no deterrent for super mum Nicola! When her second born Elsie was well enough to return to their home of Charleville, she was determined to keep donating to us at the Queensland Milk Bank. Whenever she and her family would make the journey back to #RBWH for appointments, shed bring an esky packed full of breast milk checked in as premium hand luggage, donating in total an amazing 50 litres. Were so lucky to have dedicated donor mums like Nicola! And a big congratulations from us on the safe arrival of gorgeous baby Connie, who joins big sister and brother Elsie and Locky.

24.01.2022 We currently have 160L of life-enriching milk on hand, but we'd like to have 250L! If you would like to donate and help babies grow big and strong, please contact [email protected].

22.01.2022 Thanks to the generosity of our donor Mums, weve got 250 litres of milk ready to be pasteurised. When you consider that one litre is enough to help around 50 babies, thats a whole lot of milk to go around. Thank you for helping us save little lives all around the country!

22.01.2022 Meet our amazing Senior Pharmacist Isabelle. As a vital part of the Milk Bank team, Isabelle and her fellow pharmacists work with donors to ensure breast milk donations are safe for tiny babies. Thanks for helping give little ones the best start to life, Isabelle!

21.01.2022 In light of the current COVID-19 situation, weve been receiving some questions about donating. Our process remains the same during this time. We are unable to accept milk if you are unwell and if you test positive to COVID-19, until cleared by a medical professional. If you are already one of our amazing donors, please contact us if you become unwell. However, if you are in good health AND currently breastfeeding or expressing with an abundant supply of milk, surplus to you...r baby's needs, we'd love to hear from you! It's particularly important we keep up our supplies during this time. So yes, please keep the donations coming if you meet the criteria for donating. Find out more information here: https://metronorth.health.qld.gov.au//healthcare/milk-bank From screening, collecting, pasteurising and distributing, you can be sure our processes are robust and meet the required standards for safe milk and the medical and nutritional needs of our unwell newborns.

21.01.2022 Meet Feroni and her gorgeous son Ryan. Feroni is one the Queensland Milk Bank’s incredibly generous donors. After having a surplus supply of milk with her first child and not knowing what to do with it, Feroni found the Queensland Milk Bank before baby Ryan was born. She says knowing that her extra milk has gone on to help other babies is very rewarding and she’s happy to be able to help. Thanks for all that you do, Feroni!

20.01.2022 Our incredible donor Julie has been donating to the Milk Bank since early 2019. Rather than throwing away her excess supply of breast milk, she decided to use it to help other babies. Thanks to Julie, more than 2,200 premature bubs across the country have enjoyed a healthier start to life.

18.01.2022 Today marks the beginning of World Breastfeeding Week! The theme this year is "Empower Parents, Enable Breastfeeding", which aims to support mothers and educate fathers/partners on the valuable role they play. The Australian Breastfeeding Association was at #RBWH today to help spread the word.

18.01.2022 Our milk bank levels are currently low and we are in urgent need of donations. If you would like to donate and help tiny babies across the country get the best start to life, please contact [email protected].

17.01.2022 From NASA Engineer to medical inventor Australian Medical Engineer John Grant-Thompson invented the Neocot which he dubbed an ‘ICU on wheels’. From its conception in 1998 at #RBWH to now, the Neocot is used by the RBWH NeoRESQ team to transport premature babies from all over Queensland for life saving care. Director of Neonatology at RBWH and Queensland Milk Bank's very own, Dr Pieter Koorts, features in Australian Story to tell us why the invention of the Neocot was crucial to the survival of premature babies Australia and Scandinavia. Watch the full video below.

17.01.2022 Earlier this year, RBWH’s Dr Ashleigh Smith and her husband lost their daughter Isla at two days old. Turning her profound heartbreak into strength and purpose, she started The Glimmer Podcast to help her and others navigate the journey ahead after loss. It’s a beautiful listen. Don’t let the darkness swallow you, don’t let yourself do this alone Dr Ashleigh Smith: https://apple.co/3bjRciY

16.01.2022 October 15 marks International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Today and everyday we remember the lives of the little ones taken too soon and think of the families who carry this heartbreak. We also recognise the incredible work of the Grantley Stable Neonatology Unit at RBWH and neonatology units across the world.

15.01.2022 Thanks to the generosity of our donor Mums, we’ve got 250 litres of milk ready to be pasteurised. When you consider that one litre is enough to help around 50 babies, that’s a whole lot of milk to go around. Thank you for helping us save little lives all around the country!

14.01.2022 How amazing is breast milk? Its perfectly normal for breast milk to be clear, white, yellow, orange, blue or green. It doesnt indicate a problem, its got to do with how different foods impact the milk (like leafy greens, for example) or the milks changing composition overtime. Were proud to have life-enhancing milk in many different colours to send babies around the country.

14.01.2022 We currently have 189 litres of milk in our freezers. Could you be our next donor?

13.01.2022 Sadly, due to social distancing restrictions, the annual RBWH Baby Memorial Service for early pregnancy loss and Interment of Ashes will be postponed until we are able to gather together again to remember and honour our little ones. All ashes received throughout the year will be in safe keeping until that time and treated with utmost care and respect. We acknowledge the sadness and grief that parents will be experiencing and welcome anyone who requires compassionate support to call the RBWH Chaplaincy Service on 3646 7988. We will let you know when a future date is possible.

13.01.2022 Some of you may remember our generous donor Keira! When three became five just 12 weeks ago, Keira contacted us again to donate her excess milk. With her firstborn and now two-year-old Adele, Keira donated close to 40L of milk to help other tiny babies. Now with her super cute twins Cora and Cleo, she thinks shes set to beat her personal best, with 10L already donated and another 10L ready to go (and counting!) Shes thrilled to be able to help other families and babies during this important time of life. Were so lucky to have loyal donors like Keira and such a supportive QLD Milk Bank community.

12.01.2022 Our amazing donor Keira has donated more than 40 litres of milk to babies in need! She is lucky enough to work for a company that encourages their staff to take volunteering leave, which she used to donate to the Milk Bank. Today, we'd like to give a shout out to all the working mums like Keira who have helped us give babies the best start to life.

11.01.2022 Melissa Walsh was lucky enough to have an oversupply of breast milk for her daughter Marley, but when her freezer was completely overflowing, she knew she had to find a meaningful way of culling her stash. Following a quick Google search, Melissa got in touch with the Queensland Milk Bank and shortly after began the process of donation. Melissa encourages any new Mum with an oversupply to consider donating, saying It’s been such as easy process and all on my terms. I feel so happy knowing that my milk has gone on to hep so many other babies. Thanks Melissa, we couldn’t do it without you!

11.01.2022 Meet gorgeous baby Lara and her amazing mum Jess. Lara has been here at #RBWH for 12 weeks after being born at just 766 grams. All while making sure Lara grows strong and big, Jess has been helping other tiny babies do the same by donating over 12L of her excess milk. This is a huge help to us at the QLD Milk Bank and it means that 600 premature babies will now enjoy a healthier start to life. Thank you for your incredible generosity, Jess!

11.01.2022 The Grantley Stable Neonatology Unit team at #RBWH are celebrating 20 years in their new home! RBWH Neonatologist David Cartwright and Neonatology Director Pieter Koorts say that the best part of their jobs is the special relationships they form with the families of patients, who often come back to visit them years after their time in the unit Full story in comments.

07.01.2022 At the QLD Milk Bank, we know that regular hand washing is the simplest and most effective way of keeping our little people safe from infection. Parents of tiny babies know this too inside and out! But we cant always guarantee that others do. A gentle reminder to our visiting loved ones to wash their hands can go a long way. Because, when it comes to the health of you and your baby, hand hygiene matters!

05.01.2022 It’s selfless mothers like Jacque Antis who are the heart of the #QueenslandMilkBank and the reason we have constant supplies of breast milk for preterm babies. Jacque turned her heartbreak at losing son Edi at just 10 days old into purpose by donating 20 litres of her breast milk that was meant for Edi. Thank you, Jacque and Edi! You can read her heartbreakingly beautiful story in the Courier Mail’s QWeekend via the link below.

04.01.2022 If you've been to #RBWH's Special Care Nursery, chances are you've seen photos of the Haddy triplets up on the walls, taken when they weighed less than 1.8kg between them. Fast forward ten years and it's an entirely different story!

03.01.2022 If youve ever donated or made contact with us, chances are youve spoken with the wonderful Karen. As our Clinical Nurse Consultant, Karen heads up lots of different roles here at the Queensland Milk Bank, but speaking with our donors and listening to their unique stories is what she loves most. Today, on International Nurses Day, join us in thanking our special nurse Karen!

03.01.2022 Caring for tiny lives is a team effort. Ronald McDonald House South East Queensland is a special piece of the puzzle, providing accomodation for families of babies undergoing treatment at #RBWH. Often, these very same babies require our Milk Bank donations. RMH SEQ Volunteer Anna, pictured, gives up two days every week to support families by welcoming them to the house, cooking meals, playing with children and offering a listening ear to parents.

Earlier this month the team invited families who have been cared for by the Unit to celebrate the lives of babies who were born too soon for World Prematurity Day (17 November). We're incredibly proud of the important role the Queensland Milk Bank plays in providing the right care, at the right time, in the right place to babies who need it most.
