24.01.2022 Mandy the Standy. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship

23.01.2022 We had this lovely young girl here for a visit this morning. One of the things we worked on was confidence around having her feet trimmed/shod. Her owner is doing a great job bringing her along, but bought her over to get some pointers on a few things, and for us to check her progress. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #coltstarting

23.01.2022 I've been a bit slack with photos this week, bit busy around here! Here are a few pics from a session with Captain yesterday. He is a sensitive guy, and here Pete is using the rope and tarp to help Captain build confidence with things moving around him and touching him. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #educationnotjustriding

21.01.2022 Captain moving the heifers to a new paddock yesterday. Doing a job with the horses puts purpose to all the exercises that we do. Captain has to speed up, slow down, stick with Pete, not rush off, go forward, back up, walk his front end around his hind end, walk his hind end around his back end, move off his leg and step sideways, maintain a loose rein. All those 'drills' we do in the arena that people think are so boring are actually pretty handy when you need them to get a job done!

19.01.2022 Pete giving Riley some time to dwell at the end of their session. Riley is a minimally handled stock horse gelding we have here at the moment. This pic was taken a week or so ago, earlier on in his stay. It is important that we have some hang time with him, that he doesn't think that every time a human comes near him we are going to 'do' something. That he can let his guard down a bit and just relax, and hopefully with time even learn to enjoy our company!... I like that he is choosing to stand pretty close to Pete, when he has the option to leave. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #coltstarting #australianstockhorse

16.01.2022 I feel like it is a bit like this around here!

15.01.2022 Rooster. His face says it all. 'If I just stand here and look all handsome and innocent she won't notice that I managed to get hold of her phone, bury it in the sand, and I'm standing on it right now'. For more info on the saddle Rooster is so expertly modelling, (he takes this role very seriously), contact Deb at The Disciplined Ride, or PM us.... #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #rooster #troublemaker #willheevergrowup #forsale #luckyhescute #liverchestnut #quarterhorse #ranchhorse

14.01.2022 Ain't that the truth...

14.01.2022 Going back through the photos I took today and I stumble across this gem. I have no idea what I was doing, climbing over the fence, on Ripley even. No idea. The day is a blur. But good to see Rooster managed to end up completely in frame even in an accidental shot!

14.01.2022 I know we have covered this topic before, but Amy is so much more eloquent than I am...

13.01.2022 Bonnie out in the bush yesterday. It is just one big arena really, where you get to work on going, stopping, turning, thinking, softening, listening, with added bonuses like things that tickle your tummy, things that make you think about where your feet are, black fluffy things (calves) that come running up to say hello!

12.01.2022 Mandy the Standy out working on some natural obstacles today. Thinking down to her feet stepping over fallen logs etc, and after 25mm of rain in about half an hour there were some water crossings as well! #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #coltstarting #horsemanship

12.01.2022 First adventure out of the arena for Cyrus. Lots of reassurance. A buddy along for the ride. Not too much being asked of him, just a short walk out to show him he's ok and build his confidence for next time. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #coltstarting #horsetraining #firstrides

11.01.2022 We are so lucky to have such a nice bunch of horses around us at the moment. And also lucky the days are long!!!

10.01.2022 JUST A TRAIL HORSE? One of the most underestimated beholders of equine prowess would have to be the trail horse. I often hear in conversation I’m just after a ...trail horse, nothing special or well educated. But do they really know what they are asking for? And more so what is expected of this nothing fancy horse? It’s like saying they’re just a stay-at-home mum - without understanding what is required for the job at hand. A job with a nothing fancy title can sure hold a lot of responsibility. A trail horse is required to be easily adaptable, emotionally sound and brave in an ever-changing environment. This is totally unlike the horse school or the arena where the environment is controlled and predictable - the trail horse needs to be able to handle its own emotions and those of the people and at times, other horses, around it. The trail horse needs a solid education, where they can be guided through difficult terrain and unknown situations without batting an eye. Consider all the jobs required along the trail - open and closing of gates, creek or river crossings and navigating traffic, wheelie bins and plastic bags, motorbikes, dogs and nervous riders. The trail horse is a lot more than just a trail horse and requires a solid education to be a stable one. The questions is, are you a solid influence on your nothing fancy horse? - Tiffanie Edwards

09.01.2022 It is so nice when your riding mares get to become broodmares at the end of their career. They have had a lot of life experiences, and have a great relationship with their humans, and get the opportunity to pass so much on to their babies. It makes raising foals so much easier when you have nice mares as their mummas. I never even thought twice about moving Lilly and her filly to a new paddock off the bike today.... #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #quarterhorse #mrsaltyblueman #ranchlife

08.01.2022 What a pretty day. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #horsemanship #horsetraining #coltstarting

08.01.2022 Malachy's favourite part of his working day! Every afternoon after I take his saddle off I turn him loose in the arena for a roll in the sand. He loves it! #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #coltstarting #horsemanship #happyhorse

08.01.2022 Pete unsaddling one of his faves tonight... I know, he's not supposed to have fave's but he really gets along with this mare. She is sassy, hard working, good looking. All his favourite things! It is rewarding when we get to do follow up work with horses we have started. We have quite a few clients who have horses that we have started, and if they go away on holidays etc they send the horse back for us to look after, and work, while they are away. Others who just send the... horses back for regular blocks of work. We get to keep adding to the horses education. In Gucci's case, we started her about 18 months ago, and then we moved next door to her! So Pete still gets to hang out with his girl every now and then. Gucci is currently for sale. So if you are in the market for an intelligent, good looking, athletic, performance bred young Morgan to go on with, shoot us a message and we will point you in the right direction. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #coltstarting #morganhorse #horsemanship #forsale Saddle from The Disciplined Ride

07.01.2022 Go, Rooster, Go! Rooster blowing some cobwebs out yesterday. It is important that our horses can get their life up and their feet moving, but then come straight back down to calm. #rooster #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #quarterhorse #ranchhorse #coltstarting #horsetraining

06.01.2022 Scout had a great day today. He was fairly convinced being a roping horse wasn't going to be for him, but Pete is winning him over.

03.01.2022 Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about the balance between developing regulation and empowering growth in our horses. Regulation with horses starts by meetings... their needs and it is so important to me because I love the deep bond that develops when we truly feel seen, heard, and understood. I also feel like empowerment is a crucial piece to the puzzle because, when we’ve established strong bonds with our horses, we are able to do more together than we ever could have achieved apart. I’ve noticed that sometimes riders struggle to find the balance between developing the relational bond with their horses and empowering their horses to do hard things. I think these two goals must be worked on simultaneously because an over-emphasis on one side of the spectrum can have negative consequences. For example, sometimes it can be easy to focus so much on meeting needs that we avoid challenges and, as a result, our world with our horses gets smaller. On the flip side, tackling challenges without building rapport first often creates a dynamic where we expend the relationship with our horses and, even if their bodies obey our requests, they will mentally look for an out. So, in order to have an awesome relationship with your horse, I feel like there needs to be a balance between deepening the roots of your bond and also pushing the edge of your comfort zone. That way, as you reflect on your relationship over time, you’ll hopefully notice that the things you can do with your horses and the connection you feel with them are both growing and expanding. And before you know it, your dreams are within reach! #RelationalHorsemanship #AHorsemansPursuit #horsetraining #horsemanship

02.01.2022 We just got hit by a massive windstorm. Ripley was in the shed freaking out so I raced him out to his yard. He is now standing happily out in the wind and dust getting hit by sticks and goodness knows what else. Big Ted on the other hand found his comfort in the shed. He isn't worried about the roof sounding like it is about to come off, he's happy to be inside. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #horsesforcourses

01.01.2022 Something to ponder over your Sunday morning coffee. Progress is definitely not linear! It meanders all over the place, with some high highs and low lows thrown in to keep things interesting. But it is not necessarily linear, or easy.... But as long as it keeps going forward, no matter how slow, it is progress.

01.01.2022 How was your Sunday? I chose to hang out with these two faves. A leisurely stroll on a perfect sunny morning. Do you get to enjoy your horses company? Or are you focusing on something when you are with them? Training. Feeding. Rugging. Are you 'doing stuff' and 'busy' all the time? During the week I get to ride, Rip. Sure. But we are working. The focus isn't so much on his needs, but on helping youngsters, and sometimes not so youngsters, become responsible citizens. He get...s run in to, pushed around, dragged around, trots around the block who knows how many times, wears whatever saddle is left over, spends a lot of time standing around waiting, and never complains. Well, he doesn't love exuberant mares, but he sucks it up and doesn't put a foot wrong. So it was nice to take the morning today and just enjoy his company. Go for a stroll, stop where there was some nice grass and let him graze. No pressure. No training. Just being present. He earns it. #quinnfamilyhorsemanship #ripley #legend #ranchhorse #quarterhorse #horseriding #horsemanship
