24.01.2022 ANXIETY, ADHD & SLEEP DISORDERS ARE FOUND TO BE MORE COMMON IN KIDS WITH LARGE ADENOIDS..... A study in 2013 published in the International Journal of Otorhinol...aryngology found that anxiety, ADHD, oppositional defiance disorder and sleep disorders were more common in children with overgrown adenoids. WHAT HAPPENED? When adenotonsillectomy was performed, the symptoms and severity in most of these children in most cases improved. This should completely change the way we look kids with these types of psychiatric issues... Unfortunately, we as parents aren't informed and educated about the correlation between psychiatric disorders and breathing and sleep. WHAT THE THE ADENOIDS AND WHERE ARE THEY? The adenoids are small lumps of soft tissue found at the back of the nose in children. They are made of the same tissue as lymph nodes (glands). If the adenoids get infected and swollen, they can cause ear and breathing problems. But we can't see them by looking in the throat or the nose.... Health professionals who have had knowledge and training in this area can identify a mouth breathing issue and refer you onto an ENT surgeon who can diagnose and assess your child for enlarged adenoids. Studies show that children can experience improvement of their symptoms as early as 3 months after surgery. THINGS YOU CAN DO AS A PARENT: 1. DON'T IGNORE THE SNORE! Large adenoids can cause obstruction of the airways resulting in poor sleep and mouth breathing. Snoring is NOT normal and your child needs to be seen to by a health professional. 2. IF YOUR CHILD IS BEING DIAGNOSED WITH OR IS SHOWING SIGNS OF ANXIETY, ADD, ADHD OR OPPOSITIONAL DEFIANCE DISORDER, check out their sleep and breathing. This part is not just important. It's imperative. WHY DO WE WORRY? The reason that Orofacial Myologists like me are concerned about this is because mouth breathing and airway troubles can also affect your child's oral, dental and facial growth and development. If you are worried about your child's mouth breathing and unsure where to start, give us a call and make an appointment for an Orofacial Myofunctional assessment of your child on 47 55 20 55 Carla References: 1. 20.01.2022 A great article, we can really help our kids grow to their full potential. A simple thing like chewing has so many growth and development benefits!

18.01.2022 We sometimes miss the cardinal signs of sleep disorders. Breathing is the underlying cause

17.01.2022 Such a wonderful article.

16.01.2022 A very interesting article on oral restrictions (tongue ties). At Border Medical Laser we encourage informed decision making, and researched based evidence. Education and awareness is invaluable.

15.01.2022 TONSILS ARE FASCINATING..... They are part of the immune system and yet, they can be quite a problem for some kids. There are a few tricky things to know about ...tonsils, but I thought we could bust 2 MYTHS for you today: 1. THERE NEEDS TO BE SEVERAL BOUTS OF TONSILLITIS TO WARRANT HAVING TONSILS OUT Actually, no. If a child has a set of large tonsils that are causing them to snore, cough, choke, have laboured breathing, poor sleep or have difficulty with managing and swallowing foods, then tonsillectomy is the first line of treatment to get children on the right track to proper growth and development. 2. BIG TONSILS ALWAYS NEED TO COME OUT Not always. Sometimes what look like little tonsils need to come out. It's all about the size of the space that the tonsils live in. Some people have quite large tonsils that never cause them any problems. Others have small tonsils that are extremely problematic due to the size of the space that they are in (think of the mouth as a box that needs to fit the tongue, teeth, palate and soft tissues). What gives us important clues as to whether a child needs to see an ENT to assess their tonsils (and the rest of their airway) are the SYMPTOMS that they are experiencing. So here are just a few clues that your child's tonsils might be causing a problem: - poor behaviour - tired upon waking in the morning - daytime sleepiness - snoring - mouth breathing - bad breath - teeth grinding during sleep - bed wetting Don't be afraid to speak with your GP if you are concerned about your child's tonsils, sleep or breathing.... 12.01.2022 A very simple explanation why it is so important for us to breathe with through our nose with our mouths closed, and our tongue resting on the roof of our mouth.

11.01.2022 What a beautiful visual of what prolonged finger, thumb and dummy sucking can do to teeth and jaws!

06.01.2022 It may not be ADHD! Research published over 10 years ago suggested children with ADHD may actually just be having symptoms because is sleep apnoea! Make sure everything is assessed. Call us to make an appointment with an ENT Specialist.

01.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW THAT BREASTFEEDING IS GREAT FOR GROWING HEALTHY LITTLE FACES? We all know about the many benefits of breast milk. It strengthens baby’s immune s...ystem, it provides optimal nutrition........ But did you know that breastfeeding your child also has a positive impact on your their growing face, jaws and teeth? Studies show that breastfeeding helps to develop the muscles of the face and tongue and assists in establishing a nasal breathing pattern, all of which are essential for ideal facial and jaw development. Most growth of the face and jaws takes place in the first 4 years of life and it is the early feeding habits that dictate this pattern. Researchers believe that it is the shape of the breast tissue and the way babies hold it between the roof of their mouth, cheeks and tongue that strengthens the face and tongue muscles and prepares them for speech and chewing. Also the action of the tongue and jaw muscles during feeding help to develop the face. Pretty cool hey. As mothers we are given SO MUCH information about the power of breast milk, we often don’t get told about the benefits of breast feeding on our babies’ faces and jaws information we all should be know about. Carla Disclaimer - I have four kids and have both breast AND bottle fed them. P.S. I will write another post on the best way to bottle feed your baby for healthy oral development soon!
