25.01.2022 Thank you so much Greg Hill Finance for your very generous donation of $500 to help us replace our stolen goods. We will be able to get a new electrical pump and new flares with your kind donation. Our turtle rescue boat will be fully geared up again. It warms our heart that a small local Gladstone business like Greg Hill Finance supports our turtle centre. Together with Jamie Heymers donation, all the stolen goods have now been replaced.... For anyone else wanting to help: we dont receive any government funding, so we do welcome donations all year round. Were a 24/7 care turtle hospital and go through lots of medical supplies and turtle food. Our weekly turtle food bill alone is $500. Any donations will go straight to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured sea turtles. Thank you for your help Quoin Island Retreat Pty Ltd BSB: 014 580 Acc no: 8357 66784

24.01.2022 Thanks for the shout out ABC Capricornia We love the exposure you support us with to help educate our community

22.01.2022 Here is Mungs release at Quoin Island. Thanks for capturing the moment Nhulundu Health Service !

22.01.2022 We had this little trooper visit us yesterday and help us at the turtle centre. Owen is only 5yrs old and very passionate about wildlife. When hes not in school you can find him on the beach cleaning up rubbish, or making bracelets and key-hangers to raise funds for the conservation of wildlife. We cant wait to see where Owens passion for wildlife will take him, but were sure the animals are incredibly lucky to have him. ... Kids like Owen make us hopeful that there is a bright future for sea turtles ahead of us. Keep up the good work Owen! You can follow Owens adventures on his Facebook page Owens Wildlife Adventures He does little educational videos as well.

21.01.2022 Congrats to our sponsors McCosker Contracting for this fantastic award in our local region! We love that the constructors of the weir have included the provision of a dedicated turtle swim thru passage to enable migration of turtles upstream and down stream and fish lock, which attracts the fish and also allows them to travel up and down stream. We love it! #savetheturtles

21.01.2022 Thank you Officeworks for donating 4 donation boxes to our centre! And also for being so willing to help even more, like wanting to come over to the centre and get your hands dirty. Really appreciate the support from local business for our non-profit organisation! Stay tuned to find out where these donation boxes have been placed. Hopefully well get lots of support from our locals for the rescue and rehabilitation of the sea turtles in our region.

21.01.2022 The release of our beautiful Yoda this week.

20.01.2022 Mr. Susans release

20.01.2022 Another happy turtle story. We released Edith, a juvenile green turtle last week. Edith was found by Rob and Cheryl when she had beached herself on Quoin Island, not too far from our rehab centre. Rob and Cheryl named Edith after their granddaughter. Edith was a bit underweight when we admitted her in May this year and was covered in barnacles.... On the day we determined Edith had reached her goal weight, only 3 months after she arrived at the centre, we had Nataly Zelayandia volunteering with us. Nataly is the Community Relations Coordinator with ConocoPhillips (Australia Pacific LNG) and came over on her day off to help us out. ConocoPhillips is the primary sponsor of our turtle centre, so it was a great coincidence to have Nataly there to help us with the release. Thanks so much for helping us out Nataly and especially ConocoPhillips for your continuous support. We wouldnt be able to save these beautiful sea turtles without you. Thank you Rob and Cheryl for finding Edith and calling her in. It was great to have you there for the release with us as well! If you find a sick or injured sea turtle please call us on 0408 431 304.

20.01.2022 September has been good on Quoin! After the double release of Sunny and Raph, we’ve now released 5 turtles in total this month. - Sunny was found at Causeway Lake, very weak, covered in parasites, barely responding and not being able to swim. We weren’t sure if she was going to make it, but she amazed us by making a speedy recovery and only stayed with us for 3 months. - Raph was found floating at Mulambin Beach, just around the corner from where Sunny was found. Besides not ...being able to dive down, Raph was in great condition and rehabilitation only took 6.5 weeks. Our volunteer Tracey released Sunny and Raph with the help of her colleagues at Mulambin Beach. Thanks for sending us the footage! Big thank you to all the people involved, our great volunteers and turtle taxi’s! With your help we were able to release these animals healthy, back into the wild in a really short timeframe. Please call us on 0408 431 304 if you find a sick or injured sea turtle.

20.01.2022 Gladstone, can you please help us out? This week we had some people shopping on our boat to fit their own boat out. Our epirb, life vests, emergency flares and electric pump were stolen. A boat clearly marked for Turtle Rescue. The boat we actually use for turtle rescues and bringing our volunteers over to the island. ... We are a non for profit organisation dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured sea turtles. We dont receive any government funding. Besides some corporate funding, its just the love, sweat and tears were pouring in it ourselves. Stealing from a non for profit organisation working so hard for a good cause is NOT cool! If you see or get offered the items above, can you please contact us? Information leading to the return of our stolen goods will be rewarded with a meet and greet with our turtles.

20.01.2022 Big shoutout to the following local businesses who have put our new donation boxes at their cash registers for our sea turtles. Thank you for stepping up and being willing to play a part in the conservation of the vulnerable species in our region: - LOCATIONS estate agents - Gladstone - Flavours Marina - The Dock at East Shores... - Cafe Spinnaker Park Please consider dropping some coins (or notes!) in the boxes when youre visiting these businesses. Were a non-profit organisation and cant survive without sponsorships and donations. Rehabilitating sea turtles costs us about $26,000 per year in turtle food only. Yes... you read that correctly, thats just the turtle food! Weve also got the costs of medication, medical equipment, employees, insurance, fuel, power, maintenance, rates etc. Thanks so much for your support Gladstone! We wouldnt be able to save the magnificent sea turtles in our region without the help of our lovely locals and the businesses in town. Please contact us on 0408 431 304 if you find a sick or injured sea turtle.

20.01.2022 Last week was a great week for our centre. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, we were able to release 3 sea turtles back into the wild! - Monti was found beached, lethargic and sick on Zilzie Beach and stayed with us for 4 months. - Cassy was found beached with injuries on the rocks in Agnes Water and stayed with us for 4 months. - Tommy was found floating in the Boyne River and was rehabilitated in a record speed of less than 4 weeks.... A big thank you to the people who called these animals in and transported them to our centre. We wouldnt have been able to nurse these animals back to good health without your help! Please call us on 0408 431 304 if you find a sick or injured sea turtle.

19.01.2022 Thank you for your hard work and donation Mariah. We really enjoyed spending the day with you and releasing Tommy the turtle together!

19.01.2022 Another amazing Kid doing such amazing things! Little Aarya recently visited Quoin with his school St John the Baptist Catholic Primary School Gladstone. His parents have been giving the kids weekly chores to complete in return for some pocket money! After working hard, he saved $300 ... little Aarya has decided to donate $75 of his pocket money to help save the turtles! Amazing what the kids of our generation are doing to help wildlife and support rehabilitation of our sick and injured creatures! Well done Aarya and congrats to Mum and Dad for raising such compassionate children!

18.01.2022 Thank you so much for your kind donation and continuous support of our centre Carole. Your work is truly amazing and the turtles you paint are very lifelike. For all the turtle lovers out there, check out Caroles page. Her beautiful turtle paintings always fly out of the door, so youll have to be quick to get your hands on one.

18.01.2022 Some great footage of Yodas release last Friday.

17.01.2022 We have another turtle release! Chelone, nicknamed Chelo, is a juvenile green sea turtle found at Boyne Island. She was brought in by Jeanette, who came across Chelo in the water. Chelo was struggling to swim and breathe, and was very worn out from trying to swim down. She was floating from the back end of her shell, making her tip forward. This was keeping her from fully submerging, but also making it hard to lift her head past the waves. ... Jeanette saw that the turtle was in trouble and called Quoin Island Turtle Rehab Centre right away. When Chelo arrived to the island, she was covered in barnacles, parasites, sludge and algae. After a good clean, her beautiful carapace was revealed, but she still had much recovering to do as she was still floating. Over the two months that Chelone was here, she went from staying in very low water in the ICU tank and barely eating, to swimming and properly submerging in the big pool, even stealing the other turtles food after eating her own. Chelo gained 2 kilos during her stay and went back into the ocean at 10kg, a clean carapace, and the ability to dive down with ease. Thanks for your help Jeanette Matslofva! If you see a sick or injured turtle, in or out of the water, please call 0408431304.

17.01.2022 Giving the turtles a voice! Quoin Island’s Kim was live on ABC radio last week. She talked about: - the busy month of September for the Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre (5 releases so far and 8 new patients coming in, and the month hasn’t even finished yet!)... - how recreational fishing can impact sea turtles in a bad way - where most turtle strandings are happening in the region and what the current travel limitations could have to do with it - the wonderful volunteers at the centre, focussing on our turtle taxi’s in particular See more

17.01.2022 Last Friday was an exciting day for us, as we released Denise. She was a long term patient, due to severe boat strike injuries. You can watch her story here: https://www.abc.net.au//green-sea-turtle-rehabili/12320248 We will miss this beautiful big green girl, but were so happy shes back in the big blue.... Boaties and fishermen, please be mindful of marine wildlife. Even if you cant see them, sea turtles are out there and your actions can cause potential harm. Denise was found on a remote beach on Great Keppel Island, with no roads or tracks to access. If it wasnt for Raewyn walking her dog that day, Denise would not have been found. Sea turtles are incredibly resilient and dont give up. With boat strikes like Denise had, this wouldve meant a very slow and painful death for her. Just because of one single human interaction. Please be mindful. Animal lives matter too. If you see a sick or injured sea turtle, please call us on 0408 431 304. Thank you Raewyn, Lyndie and her 3 guests, Denise, Mark, Chris, Don, Trish, Jo, Peter and everyone involved in Denises rescue. We couldnt have saved Denise without you. Greg Muir at Alma Street Veterinary Hospital in Rockhampton, you are an amazing vet! Thank you so much for another great job and always helping us out. And thank you Erin from ABC for doing a great story on Denise!

16.01.2022 Another turtle success story! Velvet was found at Cooee Bay (Yeppoon). She was floating in the shallow surf and covered in moss and barnacles. Velvet was unable to dive and was underweight at 5.1kg when she was found. Turtles come up to the surface for air, but if they cannot dive back down, they cannot eat. After managing her health, she began diving again and we could feed her squid and pilchards. Velvet was released at 9.3kg.... She was with us for 2.5 months and was released by our long term and dedicated volunteer, Carly Seebacher with the help of Velvets finders, back into the waters where she was found. If you see a sick or injured turtle, please call 0408 431 304

16.01.2022 We are happy to announce another turtle release. Mr. Susan is a green juvenile sea turtle and a rare story in that she actually came to us. We found her washed up on the rocks at Quoin, right in front of the rehabilitation centre. Mr. Susan was underweight, sunburnt, and covered in barnacles and leeches. She was feisty from the start, but took her a while to start eating and to start her recovery process. She was with us for two months and, by the end of her stint at the... rehab centre, she became a quick, agile and healthy turtle. Mr. Susan went from 6.6kg to a healthy 9kg. We always release our rehabilitated turtles back to where they were found, and it was especially wonderful getting to release Mr. Susan right off the beaches of Quoin Island. Fun fact: The name Mr. Susan came from the fact that you cant actually tell if turtles are male or female just by looking at them when they are as young as Mr. Susan. It isnt until they reach sexual maturity that their tails show what sex they are, with females having tails that dont reach more than 10cm past the edge of the carapace.

15.01.2022 Flippy the Flatback has been released! Flippy, the adolescent Flatback, was found on Bangalee Beach, in Yeppoon. Flippy looked healthy except for her neck, which was bent at an angle. After undergoing x-rays at Alma Street Vet in Rockhampton to make sure nothing was broken, she began her 3 month stay at Quoin. When Flippy first came to Quoin Island Turtle Rehab Centre, she couldnt lift her head to breathe and had to be kept in a very shallow amount of water. After many... days of rehabilitation, Flippy was able to lift her head properly in order to breathe and was able to switch from the ICU tank to the big pool, where we monitored her progress and made sure her neck was fully healed before being released. We were excited to rehabilitate Flippy and return her to back to the wild as Flatbacks have a special place in Australia. Flatbacks specifically only lay eggs on the Northern beaches of Australia and nowhere else in the world. The vulnerable Flatbacks are often found in more shallow waters on soft seabeds, which makes them more susceptible to trawlers, ghost fishing nets, and increasing coastal development. If you see a Flatback or any other type of turtle in need, dont hesitate to call us at 0408 431 304.

13.01.2022 Another turtle has been released this past weekend! Mung, a sub-adult Green Sea Turtle was spotted stuck and floating in the Gladstone Power Station inlet by a crane operator on the 6th of July this year. The crane operator did an amazing job of getting her out of the inlet, which took a massive amount of effort and a whole lot of patience. He didnt give up, kept trying for hours and was able to catch her with his colleagues.... Mung weighed 41 kg when she came to Quoin Island. Although she was alert with a fairly clean carapace, she was very weak, covered in leeches, had burrowing barnacles and some wounds that needed treatment. It took a while for Mung to start eating and gaining weight, but once she became more comfortable with her surroundings and her wounds were treated, she started eating almost 3kg per day entailing a mixture of squid and pilchards. Mung was quick and energetic by the end of her 4 month stay here, being released at her goal weight of 56.7kg. Mung was released on Saturday which coincided with the annual Nhulundu Health Service Christmas on Quoin, where a near 300 guests and our dedicated turtle volunteers, Ashley Seiler, Megan Sheehan, Sharon Graham, Jarrod and Nikki, enjoyed watching her sprint back into the ocean. A massive thank you to the crane operator and his colleagues from the Gladstone Power Station. You saved Mungs life! If you find a sick or injured sea turtle, please call us on 0408 431 304 or 1300 ANIMAL.

12.01.2022 Thank you to The Health Nut Gladstone for donating greens to our turtles. They absolutely loved it! Adult Green Sea Turtles, like Yoda and Denise seen in this video are herbivores and live on sea grass and algae in the wild. As this is a bit hard to grow/harvest and sick and injured sea turtles need lots of protein to recover, we feed them squid and pilchards. To make sure they still get enough nutrients, we supplement with greens. They love their kale, spinach, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce, wombok and brussels sprouts. Every Friday The Health Nut sells great quality organic produce. Check out their Facebook page on Thursdays to find out which fruits and vegetables will be available that week. https://www.facebook.com/thehealthnutgladstone/

12.01.2022 Great Barrier Reef Marine Park: In August, we saw a significant increase in the number of reports of stranded marine turtles, particularly green turtles. These strandings occurred in the southern Marine Park, with Yeppoon beaches being a hotspot. The cause of the strandings include boat strike, poor health/disease, entanglement and unknown causes.... 2020 has been a very busy year at Quoin Island Turtle Rehab Centre, with Yeppoon -the hotspot- being part of the large region our centre covers (Mackay to Bundaberg). Of the 44 new turtles that have come in so far this year, 66% were from the Yeppoon area. If you find a stranded or floating turtle that can’t dive down, please call 1300 130 372.

12.01.2022 Were super excited to share that we smashed some records last week. For the first time in our 8 years of operating we had: - 5 successfully rehabilitated sea turtles released in one week. Rover, Stella, Barney, Jae and Coral went back into the big blue.... - a triple turtle release. Barney, Jae and Coral were all found in the same area and ready to go back home at the same time. Both Barney and Jae came in as a result of recreational fishing. Jae had an infected injury with muscle exposure from entanglement in fishing line or a crab pot. Barneys right front flipper was entangled in fishing line and had to be amputated as it couldnt be saved. Fishermen: please do the right thing and discard your unwanted items in the bin and not in the ocean. Get biodegradable fishing gear. Dont leave crab pots unattended. Turtles get stuck in them. Stella had an old boat strike on the back of her carapace, which resulted in spinal damage and she couldnt move her back flippers properly. Boaties, please slow down near sea grass areas and always be careful on the water. Turtles are marine animals that breathe and have to come up for air. Please be mindful of that and watch out for them. Thank you Carly, Karly, Bluey and Owen for your help with the release of our patients. We wouldnt be able to do what we do, without people like you. We still have 5 turtles left at the centre. But as its getting close to Winter, our busy season, the centre will be filling up again soon. If you find a sick or injured sea turtle, please call us on 0408 431 304. The ABC did a great story on the triple turtle release, you can find it here: https://www.abc.net.au//three-green-sea-turtles-r/12217494 And you can follow Owens wildlife adventures here: https://www.facebook.com/owenswildlifeadventures/ What an amazing little kid, already saving wildlife at 5yrs old!

12.01.2022 Tune into WIN News tonight to hear all about Mariahs story. Mariah, 10 years old, collected recyclables and donated the $1000 she received to Quoin Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre. To reward her huge effort, she got to spend the day at the centre with the turtles. Young kids these days give us so much hope for the future. Theyre getting so involved in the environment and are willing to put in the hard work to save the planet and protect our wildlife.

12.01.2022 Thank you so much Jamie Heymer who kindly donated new life vests and an epirb this week. Youre a legend Jamie! Two weeks ago our epirb, life vests, electric pump and emergency flares were stolen off our turtle rescue boat. Unfortunately the perpetrator didnt bring the items back. It was heartwarming to see how a community comes together when something like this happens though. Our FB post was shared far and wide, and many people offered to help out.... Weve also been inundated with requests from people for our bank account details to make a donation to replace the stolen goods. Although most of the items have been replaced with Jamies kind and generous donation, we still need to replace the electric pump and emergency flares, together worth around $500. Our details for anyone wanting to help out: Quoin Island Retreat Pty Ltd BSB: 014 580 Acc no: 8357 66784 As we dont receive any government funding, we do welcome donations all year round. Were a 24/7 care turtle hospital and go through lots of medical supplies and turtle food. Our weekly turtle food bill is $500. Any donations will go straight to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured sea turtles. Thank you for your help

06.01.2022 We have another turtle release! Stella is an adolescent green sea turtle that was actually rescued from the northern tip of Quoin Island. We got a call from helpful boaters that there was a turtle bobbing up and down who couldnt dive down. When we went to get Stella by boat, she was almost vertical with her bum in the air, struggling to get her head up to breathe. At the beginning of Stellas stay on Quoin Island, we kept her in very low water in her ICU tank, so she cou...ld lift her head with ease. Stella clearly had been through a lot already, as she had some deformities to her hind flippers and back part of her carapace from an old injury when she was younger. Stella had a lot of energy from the beginning though, and right away she started eating. Stella was in rehab for 2.5 months, gained over 8 kg of healthy weight once her floating and swelling went down, and ate over a kilo of squid and pilchard daily. Stella can now swim and breathe with ease, with her bum sitting properly. Despite her old injuries and her extreme floating at the beginning of her stay, Stella, aka Steller, is now back in the ocean, healthy as can be. Bye Stella! If you find a sick or injured sea turtle, please call us on 0408 431 304

05.01.2022 Happy World Turtle Day. How will you celebrate?

05.01.2022 Thanks to Emu Park State School for their super efforts in raising funds for QITRC and our sick and injured sea turtles. They recently held a Pyjama dress day where monies raised from this have been kindly offered to support our turtles in care. A Lot of our sick and injured turtles come from Yeppoon / Emu Park, its great that kids of this generation are working toward a better future with our marine life and learning of the efforts to save these precious creatures for futu...re generations to come! Dont forget, if you see a sick or injured sea turtle, please call 0408 431 304 #savetheturtles

04.01.2022 This is one of our boat strike victims Mada, looking pretty content with the new heaters in her tank. Keeping turtles warm is incredibly important for their recovery process. We had 2 heaters break down on us and a large influx of turtles at the same time. After our post about this on the 16th of August (see here: https://www.facebook.com/328144077257126/posts/4254579324613562/), we had some wonderful turtle lovers help us out to buy new heaters. A huge thank you to the fol...lowing people who donated: - Mark Turner - Myra Florence - Tray and John Earl - Henry Max Hunt - Mia Steffan - Anita Seebacher All ICU tanks are currently occupied and we wouldn’t have been able to give the turtles the intensive care they need without your help. You guys are amazing! Thank you!

04.01.2022 Stellas release on Quoin Island... look at her go!

03.01.2022 Did you know that sea turtles are cold blooded? This means that their body temperature changes with the environment around them. Our most common patients are Green Sea Turtles who are usually limited to water temperatures above 20C. Once the water gets colder, the turtles get slow and stop eating. In the wild they can also get cold stunned. When turtles are cold stunned, they will experience a decrease in heart rate and circulation causing them to become lethargic. Cold stunn...ing may lead to shock, pneumonia, and potentially death, as they are not able to migrate to warmer waters. Keeping our patients warm is very important for their rehabilitation process. Because of this, we heat our 5 ICU tanks in which we keep our sickest animals that need intensive care. You can see one of our patients sitting right next to a heater in her ICU tank in the photo. Unfortunately weve had 2 of the heaters in the bigger ICU tanks die on us, after years of good service. At the same time, weve had an influx of incoming patients who are very sick and need intensive care. This means we have to buy 2 new heaters to keep our patients at the right temperature and give them a chance on survival. These heaters are $750 each, which is quite costly for a non-profit organisation like us. If you can help out in any way, please message us and well send you our bank account details. Were able to provide you a tax receipt if necessary. Because its still a bit cool this Winter, there have been quite a few sick animals stranding on the beaches in the region we service, which goes as far North as Mackay and all the way down to Bundaberg. When theyre sick theyll also be floating in the water, being lethargic and unable to dive down. Please keep an eye out for them and slow down your boat if you see something floating in the water. If you find a sick or injured sea turtle, please call us 0408 431 304.

02.01.2022 We were SO excited to see this! When we were taking our volunteers over to the centre this morning, we found this love duo in a very romantic setting: right in the middle of the Gladstone Harbour It’s turtle mating season, which means you can find sea turtles floating on the surface like this all across our region. Boaties, please be mindful and slow down so these magnificent creatures don’t end up with boat strikes.... If you do accidentally hit a turtle with your boat, please stop and stick around for at least 30 minutes or until the turtle resurfaces. When turtles get hit, they dive down and can hold their breath for a while. It’s important to get the animal to our centre immediately for medical treatment and to give them a chance on survival. Please ring us if you hit a turtle with your boat, and we’ll help organise the logistics. We won’t judge and would be ever so grateful for your call. Found a sea turtle floating (if they’re floating as in the video, they’re all good and we can leave them to it) or washed up on the beach? Please call us on 0408 431 304.

01.01.2022 EDIT: Thanks all! We have found a ride. ... Hi turtle friends! Is anyone driving down from Yepoon to Gladstone tomorrow 10/9? Weve got a very sick, small turtle (about 45cm) that washed up late afternoon today in Yeppoon. Weve got a sleepover sorted in Yeppoon for tonight. Can anyone help us drive it down to Gladstone tomorrow? Please comment on this post or ring us on 0408 431 304 if you can help. Thanks so much in advance!

01.01.2022 Another love post to clog your feed! The Christmas gift of giving continues as we received a lovely email from Colin Smith and his family including long time volunteer Teresa Marsh who choose not to give gifts at Christmas this year just gone, but pool their $50 each and pull a charity name out of santas hat. This year, Teresas organisation was pulled out of the hat, being Quoin Turtles as her charity of choice! Thanks very much for your generous donation of $200 toward th...e centre. We know this will go a long way to assisting the rehab of our sick and injured turtles! Amazing idea and thanks for thinking of our centre as your charity of choice! Merry Christmas! See more

01.01.2022 Some happy news from Quoin Island: Our fantastic fulltime live-in volunteer Maddy has released Theo the turtle. Maddy found Theo floating just off Quoin Island and he was unable to dive down. She observed him for a while and then collected him from the water.... Theo stayed with us for 7 weeks, which is a really fast turnaround. His floating improved quickly and he gained a little bit of weight too. Theo was released on Quoin Island and didn’t waste any time once he had the Coral Sea in sight. If you find a sea turtle floating in the water, please observe the animal for a little while. If it’s unable to dive down, please contact us on 0408 431 304 so we can organise to get it to our centre and nurse it back to good health.
