14.01.2022 Over Exfoliation: Your skin naturally renews itself on a continual basis and part of this renewal process is the exfoliation of the epidermis. As we get older however this process slows down which can lead to the skin taking on a tired grey appearance. To speed up this process and remove the dead skin cells from the surface of the skin we use either chemical or physical defoliants. By removing the dead skin cells we increase the brightness and luminosity of the skin and also ...tend to increase the cell turnover or renewal rate which results in brighter, healthier and more attractive skin. There is a certain point that we can get to however where too much exfoliation can actually be a bad thing and ends up in the natural lipid layer of the skin being stripped and also the protective layer of fresh new skin cells being removed to the point where there is virtually no epidermis left. Having a few hardened skin cells on the surface of our skin is essential for barrier protection which stops moisture getting out of our skin and also stops bacteria and other pathogens getting in. Over exfoliating this natural lipid and cell protective layer can often result in redness, irritation, dry skin, and infection which can go on to lead into further problems over time. Therefore the most important part of exfoliation is to find the right balance. For this purpose skin specialists recommend using a gentle cleanser everyday that will not strip the natural oil barrier of the skin. When exfoliation is needed, a gentle product that contains a naturally occurring fruit acid is often recommended. These fruit acids that often contain what are referred to as AHA and BHA acids are gentle enough to be used 2-3 times per week but are also effective enough that you will notice a dramatic visual difference in your skin after treatment.
