18.01.2022 What is the NORM? Naturally-occurring radioactive material (NORM) is the term used to describe materials that contain radionuclides that exist in the natural environment. Long-lived radioactive elements include uranium, thorium and potassium, and any of their radioactive decay products, such as radium and radon (gas). NORM is found in a wide variety of bulk materials, process wastes and commodities, e.g. sands, clays, soils, coal, groundwater, oil and gas, metal ores and non-...metal minerals, including fertilisers. Metal ores include tin, tantalum, and niobium ores, rare earth metals, and some copper and gold deposits. Although the concentration of NORM is low in its natural form, materials extracted from the earth and then processed, can concentrate NORM radioactivity levels above their natural state. Australia currently does not have a uniform approach to NORM issues as each State, Territory and Commonwealth Government applies its own regulatory interpretation for radiation protection; including the management, transport and disposal of radioactive materials. In each jurisdiction, and internationally, the legislation and regulations can vary on the exemption limits for the total activity and activity concentrations of the radioactive substance to be regulated. In the majority of situations, the NORM concentrations are not high enough to pose problems for the environment or human health, however this needs to be determined by specific monitoring and analysis to support this decision. In situations where the radionuclide concentrations are significantly higher than background levels, human health may be affected and should be managed through appropriate controls and procedures, in accordance with your own company HSE policies, and the legislation and regulations governing your jurisdiction. If you would like to know more about NORM and how it may affect you, then please contact Radiation Professionals through our website www.radiationprofessionals.com or office number +61 (0) 8 9325 9948.
