23.01.2022 Today the Sunbeams played a game of Does it sink. We found objects from both indoors and outside and took turn dropping them into the water to see what happened! We had a guess about what we thought would float and what would sink to the bottom. We were very surprised when our big teddy bear floated but the small one sunk!

18.01.2022 Some of you may have seen the recent documentary on ABC, "Old People's Home for Four Year Olds" https://iview.abc.net.au//old-people-s-home-for-4-year-olds. It was an eye opening social experiment looking at the impact that intergenerational encounters have on the mental and physical health of older people living in residential care. Did you know there a programs that facilitate this wonderful initiative in Hobart? See the links below for more info ... https://www.agelessplay.com.au/individuals/ https://www.facebook.com/events/1257608427767482/?ti=as

What do you see when you look out the window at your house? Can you share a picture with us?

09.01.2022 What do you know about the magical realm of Small World Play? Small world play is acting out scenarios (scenes from real life, stories and/or imagination) in a miniature play scene, created with small figures and objects. Anything from your own home or garden will do, there is no limitation to your creativity which is why its a truly inexhaustible subject! (Little worlds, big adventures). From a biscuit tin filled with match boxes, buttons and miniature figures, to ...a tucked away little nook in the corner of the room where an entire city resides; there is so much for a child to gain from this very solitary or highly social play. While engaged in small world play, children can explore and experiment with different emotions and act out these scenes in their play. It is also an excellent way to practice social skills (when for instance building a small world on a play date) where children can connect with each other and learn to take turns, listen to someone elses ideas, compromise and so on. Small world play helps to develop numeracy by giving lots of opportunities for grouping or sorting items and counting them (How may small dinosaurs do you have? How many do go in your cave? Now, how many are left?) Children also get the chance to explore certain ideas in the world, like how a hospital would operate differently from a police station or a school and why. There is no limit to the creative opportunities provided through this play Thank you for the beautiful photos Maddie Brooks

08.01.2022 Does your child take pride in lining objects up? Do they organise their soft toys along the edge of their bed, their LEGO figures all along the window sill or do the shells they collected at the beach trace your garden path? Theres some big thinking going on there - can you share a photo of something all lined up with us?

07.01.2022 Only four days left to grab your coffee and support Rainbow

07.01.2022 Were working with our families to create a beautiful virtual art gallery. Its so easy to feel disconnected at this time, even as restrictions ease and we see the community open up a little more. We are still mindful that for the little people in our lives, creative self expression and sharing joyful artistic exploration still plays a vital role in communicating with one another. Please share your creative and expressive endeavours from home with us, tell us about your favourite mediums to explore, what worked and what didnt and just how much playful mess you were able to create.

07.01.2022 A few years ago, the Rainbow Crew were lucky enough to attend a talk with the inspirational player Marc Armitage and it changed our practices for good. The environments started to grow, our risky play was more meaningful, were reintroduced loose parts for purpose and we never looked back. Listen to the voices of these knowledgeable players in the latest Play Works podcast

03.01.2022 Good morning Rainbow community, Today's picture is a throwback to our very first entry in a local art show. For the Bruny Island Bird Festival, this was part of a large collection of works as part of a group installation. Birds depicted are all Australian native species and it made me think about today's post. In light of current, global events I'd like to share a poem with you by American national treasure Maya Angelou called Caged Bird from Shaker, Why Don't You Sing? ... This poem was published the year I was born in 1983, and speaks so beautifully to the daily plight of Black, Indigenous and Peoples of Colour (BIPOC) that so often goes unheard and at times, unseen. This poem (and other works by BIPOC) was shared in my household when I was growing up as a bed time reading, my parents used it as a way to open a dialogue with me, to discuss racism, privilege and prejudice. Poetry is a wonderful conversation starter with children as it's meaning is not always obvious and it prompts questions like, "how does that make you feel?" and "what did those words sound like to you?" and my favorite "what pictures did they paint in your imagination." I hope you are able to share it with your own children, to open an honest, respectful dialogue in the wake of Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day. Our friends at Beyond Blue share with us this link: www.psychology.org.au/for-the-publ/Psychology-topics/Racism with some amazing resources for when you choose to have these discussions in your home or when your children come to you with questions. Caged Bird Maya Angelou A free bird leaps on the back of the wind and floats downstream till the current ends and dips his wing in the orange sun rays and dares to claim the sky. But a bird that stalks down his narrow cage can seldom see through his bars of rage his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom. The free bird thinks of another breeze and the trade winds soft through the sighing trees and the fat worms waiting on a dawn bright lawn and he names the sky his own But a caged bird stands on the grave of dreams his shadow shouts on a nightmare scream his wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing. The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom.

03.01.2022 The Raindrops have been playing with simple Chemistry and making Magic Milk! Chemistry is all about the way different materials are put together, and how they are made up including atoms and molecules. Its also how these materials act under different conditions. Chemistry is often a base for physics so you will see overlap! To make your own Magic Milk experiment at home, you will need:... Full Cream Milk Food Coloring Dawn Dish Soap Cotton Swabs/ear buds Fill a shallow plate with milk and drop in a few drops of food colouring. Dont be shy, were making rainbows here people! Now pour a bit of your dish soap into a bowl, touch your cotton swab tip to the dish soap to coat it. Bring it over to your milk dish and gently touch the surface of the milk with the soapy cotton swab! What happens? Get ready to record the results! So whats behind the chemistry? Milk is made up of minerals, proteins, and fats. Proteins and fats are susceptible to changes. When the dish soap is added to the milk, those molecules run around and try to attach to the fat molecules in the milk. The colourant allows us to see the invisible science in action, and it looks like fireworks!
