25.01.2022 GRANDPARENTS DAY Last week at Rainbow, we spent a day celebrating some very special people in our lives - our Grandparents! Grandparents play such an important role in the lives of every child, for one, their amazing storytellers! theyre also incredibly kind, almost always wiser than google and have magic pockets filled with endless coins! ... The children particularly loved the quote Grandparents are people with silver in their hair and gold in their heart during our discussion on what we love most about grandparents. Were very fortunate to have so many grandparents actively involved in the lives of the children who attend Rainbow and their contributions to our centre, whether that be a simple story read to the children or an entire morning spent playing games in the yard. All your efforts are very appreciated and the children adore your company! It was a beautiful opportunity to have held a day at Rainbow that was dedicated to celebrating these important people in our lives. At Rainbow, we had a Grandparents afternoon tea party filled with special treats, stories and quality time spent together. Thank you to all of the guests of honour who made this day what it was, we are sure the children will cherish this experience! Have a look at some of the adorable moments below:

25.01.2022 NO TOY DAY EXPERIENCE After reading a blog on No toy day experiences we noticed in recent times, children are surrounded by an abundance of toys that do everything for them. Instead of opening childrens minds, many toys today can only be played within one pre-determined way, decided by a manufacturer, not a child. So, in revolt, we decided to have our very own NO TOY day at Rainbow. When the children arrived today they found no toys in their classroom. Instead, we suppl...ied an abundance of everyday recyclable materials: baskets, boxes, tubing, ribbons, packing materials, pillows, blankets, fabric scraps and several other items, (thanks to all the families that contributed to this!). The children were encouraged to use their imaginations and our educators fostered this through modelling and offering some suggestions. It took a little bit of encouragement and reassurance but not long after, the centre began to buzz with excitement as the children began to create their ideas and allow their imaginations to prosper! We saw rocket ships flying through space, robots, buses, houses, shopping centres, planes and so much more! Not to mention how much this experience seemed to motivate children to socialise with one another and work together! It was such a successful experience that we have decided to implement this further into our everyday practices. Comment your thoughts below! To learn more about our practices feel free to book a tour at our centre! http://www.rainbowchildcare.vic.edu.au If you would like to learn more about the benefits of creative play follow the link below https://www.pbs.org/wholechild/providers/play.html

23.01.2022 What better way to welcome winter that with a cosy, exciting Pyjama Day! Our Pyjama Day activities were specifically designed to correspond with the values outlined in the EYLF learning outcome 3: Children have a strong sense of wellbeing. By allowing our little learners to engage socially with their friends, work together with others and share their ideas and interests, we, in turn, have helped foster the positive development of their emotional and social wellbeing - their smiling faces say it all!

20.01.2022 We have been so, very fortunate at Rainbow to have many of our families offer their time and become involved in our activities, special group times and the events that we run. As educators, relationships are at the heart of everything we do. It is important to form genuine, positive and ongoing relationships with children and their families as children are more likely to thrive in environments that model positive interactions; when children see their families interact and wo...rk together positively with their eductors, they, in turn, are rewarded with a greater sense of belonging. Furthermore, educators and parents can accommodate the needs of individual children on a more personal and in-depth level. Children thrive when families and educators work together in partnership to support young childrens learning. (Early years learning framework (EYLF) 2016, pg. 9) . https://docs.education.gov.au//connecting-with-families_0. Recently the kinder children welcomed Levis grandpa, Christopher, to their classroom. Many of the kinder children have already met Christopher during morning drop-offs and become very fond of him. Christopher shared his interest in aeroplanes with the children during a special group time - this was fantastic and very informative, especially as the kinder children have been busy exploring different forms of transportation all month! The children were excited to ask Christopher many questions such as, "How high can aeroplanes go (fly)?" "Why do we have aeroplanes?" etc. The children were then provided with a variety of life-like models of aeroplanes view and explore through play. As you can tell from their smiling faces the kinder children were brimming with excitement and happiness! Thank you, Christopher!

19.01.2022 COMMUNICATION AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT CLASSES at DLC RAINBOW Helping your child communicate effectively is one of the most beneficial ways of fostering successful learning experiences. At Rainbow, we begin fostering the development of social intelligence in children as young as two years old within our weekly communication and social development classes. Our classes are run by a qualified speech pathologist who has expertise in supporting the development of fundamental social ...skills and social awareness in young children. Within these classes, our children develop the ability to articulate words and sentences clearly, how to comprehend verbal and non-verbal communication cues, express wants and needs in real life experiences, and, most importantly, develop meaningful friendships and bonds that will help their overall sense of happiness and wellbeing now and in the future. http://www.rainbowchildcare.vic.edu.au See more

17.01.2022 HELPING HANDS Next to plastic bags, plastic bottle tops are one of the top polluters of the oceans and environment. They create microbeads which enter the food chain and pollute our beaches. Yet, these caps can serve a great purpose once in the right hands. For several years Envision incorporation with Rotary international has run a project that turned ordinary caps into extraordinary things. The Helping Hands Project is all about turning plastic caps into prosthetic limbs a...nd helping children in disadvantaged communities. DLC Rainbow is very excited to invite everyone to join Envision in their Helping Hands community program. We will be collecting plastic bottle caps at our centre, and encourage all the families to take part the project by collecting and dropping off clean plastic caps from milk bottles, water bottles and soft drink bottles into the collection point at our centre. We are looking forward to working with you to support our community and help collect plastic caps for a great purpose! A short video that explains the Envision Hands Programme https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NP0VcknTjJg Please feel free to visit https://envision.org.au for more information.

17.01.2022 MUFFY SAYS THANK YOU! We are so happy to announce that the funds raised during our Australia day fundraiser have allowed us to adopt an orphaned native joey through the wildlife adoption program. We would like to introduce "Muffy". Muffy is a Koala joey who was found on the ground - suspected to be in search of water. Because her mother could not be found Muffy was brought into care. Due to the recent bush fires, Koalas can often be found on the ground in search of water and... often die from dehydration. Fortunately, the Wildlife adoption program was able to save Muffy and with our help, Muffy will receive the rehabilitation and care she will need to recover and join a new family at the Empire wildlife sanctuary. We will be receiving updates during on Muffys process and the children will be able to learn about Muffys journey and how their own generosity and kindness has helped save Muffys life. Thank you to all our families who contributed to this fund. Muffy says thank you too!

16.01.2022 Being a family orientated centre, allows us to work closely with every child and build upon their interests and goals. We have lots of little green thumbs at Rainbow who often share their interest in gardening. With the kind donations of many seedlings, we have created an ongoing outdoor gardening experience that allows the children to continuously enjoy embracing nature while cultivating a strong love for learning.

16.01.2022 THE ESSENTIAL ART OF UNSTRUCTURED CREATIVITY Art is a vital form of expression. Sometimes in school settings, the unique ideas of children can become lost, as they are often taught to see the world through a more logical real-life perspective and unfortunately, this can discourage their imaginative thoughts -that is why we make it a priority to offer an abundance of unstructured play and creative explorations for all children. In the kinder room, the children often embrace... their own imaginations and creativity through unstructured art lessons. Today the children were provided with a variety of paints and brushes that they could freely use throughout the day. The children decided they wanted to station themselves on the floor, rather than the table for a change, so thats what we did. Our little artists listened to Mozart while making their masterpieces in order to create a calm environment that respected the childrens needs and abilities to concentrate for extended periods of time. Instead of assuming what they were painting, we asked the children how the music made them feel, what they would like to title their artworks and what words they would use to describe their artworks. The end results were amazingly different and impressive, and the confidence it gave the children was invaluable. See more

13.01.2022 Who said learning about the Alphabet couldnt be fun? Each week our educators plan a variety of interesting, effective and most importantly, fun experiences that focus on helping the children learn all about the alphabet. Within their early years of childhood, children are full of curiosity and eager to absorb all the knowledge and information they can. Thats why at Rainbow our educators provide endless learning opportunities that promote the growth of understanding, know...ledge and skills within a variety of learning areas. Although, we are aware that children will learn all about the alphabet in their first years of primary school, and knowing each alphabet letter competently, isnt a required learning outcome in the early years learning framework, at Rainbow, we still feel its important to introduce our children to the alphabet and allow them the chance to become familiar with each of the alphabet letter, including their formations and sound, through engaging and ongoing experiences. Have a look at just some of the exciting activities we have planned for this week

13.01.2022 Give your child the opportunity to foster a natural and ongoing curiosity about the world through our weekly Science & Nature enrichment classes at Rainbow. Our STEM program Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics includes a wide range of disciplines and skills that are increasingly more relevant and needed in our developing world. We are so delighted to run such an enriching science program that provides all learners with the opportunity to explore phenomena and gain an ongoing awareness of self and local world. http://www.rainbowchildcare.vic.edu.au

13.01.2022 With Mothers Day coming up this weekend and with restrictions still in place, were all limited to special outings to celebrate on Sunday. To help celebrate Mothers Day, the children in our Preschool room have decided to put together an art exhibit for all parents to enjoy. This exhibit highlights the strong female figures that cherish, love and support our children. Whether it be a mother, grandmother, Aunty or any other strong female role model the children love. Piece by piece, the children created a collection of art work to display in this exhibit to celebrate the special women in our lives. Happy Mothers Day!

12.01.2022 Meal times are always fun at Rainbow! We believe it is important to offer our younger children just as much opportunities to challenge themselves and learn self-help skills through independent explorations, as we do for their older peers. Recently we have been employing this value of ours into our toddler meal times too! ... We understand that meal times can get messy, "drag on for too long" or you may feel as though not enough food was eaten, but, opting to always feed children may not be the best option. According to the "Food exploration and discovery therapy program (FED)" many mealtime challenges such as anxiety around trying new foods and behavioural feeding problems can be improved or even resolved by helping children and teens develop a healthy relationship with food - and the best way to do that is to provide opportunities for children to become comfortable and familiar with food through play & sensory explorations. So why not make mealtimes joyful in childcare and allow toddlers to explore food by trying to self-feed? Sure, it will become messy, but we want our toddlers to have the opportunity to learn and develop healthy eating habits and thats more important to us! Here at Rainbow, we encourage and allow our little learners to attempt self-feeding whenever they begin to show an interest in doing so! Our new waterproof 100% cotton mum2mum bibs are fantastic at absorbing all the mess that may occur, protecting the children against spills, dribble rash & eczema. We love the Sleeved bibs design for our littlest learners and extra wide bibs for our more experienced toddlers! To learn more about our practices feel free to book a tour at our centre! http://www.rainbowchildcare.vic.edu.au Read more about FED here: https://thecenterfordiscovery.org/food-exploration-and-dis/

12.01.2022 CELEBRATING ALL THE BEAUTIFUL MUMS, GRANDMAS AND OTHER SPECIAL WOMEN WHO PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR LIVES. We hope you had a wonderful Mothers Day that was filled with sweet surprises, just like the ones we enjoyed during our Mothers Day high tea here at Rainbow; theres nothing better than sharing a Friday afternoon, having treats and making lasting memories with our family.

12.01.2022 The power of words, As you may have noticed, within our speech classes, yoga classes and daily group times, our educators often emphasise the importance of emotional intelligence and are often teaching the children problem-solving skills and resilience when faced with day to day challenges. It has been wonderful to see the children employ these strategies when playing with their peers. We have seen so many children begin to use their words to express their emotions, seek com...fort and support from their educators when needed, and take more responsibility when it comes to caring for their emotional wellbeing. This week in our older classrooms, we decided to show the children the power of words, as we not only want the children to treat others kindly, but we also want them to treat themselves kindly. It is not uncommon to hear children say I am bad at this or I cant do this, Im not as good as so and so, especially when they are placed in a setting with lots of other children. As Shindler (2009) suggests, children often view the successes of peers as a form of competition and begin to compare their own abilities with other children. Therefore, we decided to introduce an inspiring lesson that would visually show the children the power of words", explaining how words can be used to empower themselves and others or, unfortunately, just how damaging "mean" words can be.

12.01.2022 HALLOWEEN CELEBRATION at DLC Rainbow On Thursday the 31st, Rainbow had a spooktacular Halloween celebration! Children were encouraged to express their creativity as they dressed up for the spooky occasion. Rainbow saw all types of friends join in for the day - jingly jangle skeletons, pumpkins and Avengers heroes! ... As our curriculum is based off interest based learning, we found Halloween to be a fantastic opportunity to extend our links to the community, opening dialogue about what Halloween meant to the children. The children were asked to discuss their costumes and invited to speak about what their families were up to on the spooky holiday. Educators tailored wonderful Halloween activities for each room as the children were given opportunities to participate in an array of arts and crafts. Children developed their fine motor skills, self-expression and creativity as they painted spooky ghosts, decorated colourful witchs hats and created portraits of scary skeletons. He also enjoyed some jelly, make pumpkin cookies, and shook our bones to the groovy music at a Spooky disco! =) At Rainbow we believe in developing strong links to our local communities and families, finding opportunities to promote an inclusive learning and participation within the centre. Halloween was a fantastic way of expressing the childrens interests and a fun way to socialise with our local community! Happy weekend, families!

12.01.2022 NAIDOC WEEK VOICE.TREATY.TRUTH DLC Rainbow acknowledges, recognises and respects the Ancestors, Elders and families of the Boon Wurrung of the Kulin who are traditional owners of our centre land. ... In recognition of Naidoc week, our team of educators have respectfully acknowledged and celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island history and culture through the introduction of traditional indigenous practices. Our explorations this week included guided circle times with talking sticks, sharing Indigenous beliefs through appropriate Dreamtime stories, connecting with nature, observing Indigenous art forms and symbols and discussing the importance of Australias Indigenous history. The children particularly enjoyed exploring the Dreamtime stories "How the Kangaroo got its tail" and "Rainbow serpent" and have created some wonderful artworks to represent their interests. Have a look below and post your thoughts! https://www.naidoc.org.au//naidoc-2019-voice-treaty-truth-s-work-together-shared-future We welcome you to book a tour at our centre to learn more about our curriculum: http://www.rainbowchildcare.vic.edu.au

The Children at DLC Rainbow are joining in on a global Bear Hunt, adopting the fantastic community "Rainbow walk" idea that has been keeping children entertained and happy while in isolation. We truly believe it is really important that we stand strong together as a community during these difficult times and spread happiness by putting smiles on the faces of our loved ones. DLC Rainbow will work further to support the community and aim to add a little more excitement to our day to inspire, support and encourage our little ones!

09.01.2022 This week, daycare staff across the country will go into daycares where they will interact with children of medical staff who are highly exposed to COVID-19. Th...ey will not be given face masks or protective clothing. They wont get free coffee, half price pizza or special shopping hours. They will perform their jobs in ways they have never done before and they will do it with a smile on their faces so that the children in their care dont know how scared they are; Scared for those children. Scared for their own. Scared of being responsible for taking the virus home to loved ones. Thank you to all Educators, Teachers, Teaching Assistants and anyone else heading into a daycare or school this week to keep it running so that our amazing health workers and carers can take care of the sick and the vulnerable, our shops can stay open and services can continue. 08.01.2022 CONGRATULATIONS 2019 GRADUATES! On Friday the 17th of January we celebrated our pre-school graduation for 2019. We had an amazing time celebrating the achievements of our 2019 preschool graduates. It was such an honour to watch our pre-schoolers blossom into such strong, independent, kind and clever little individuals. We have spent so many years sharing wonderful memories with our (not-so-little-anymore) graduates and are beyond proud of each and every one of them for always... trying, challenging themselves and prospering throughout the years. Thank you to all of the wonderful families for your support throughout the year. We understand that this next step in your childs life may be a little daunting for you, but they will do great and you will always have your Rainbow famiyl for support. Watching the children receiving their certificates while dressed in their graduation gowns really reminded us of how far they have all come. Dear pre-schoolers, You did it, congratulations! You will do amazingly in school and we cant wait to hear about all of your achievements.

07.01.2022 AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATIONS Our Australia Day celebrations began with a wonderful discussion about our beautiful country, its culture and traditions. The children spent some time sharing their experiences on Australia day in past years and enjoyed telling us stories about spending time with their families. Our guided conversations enlightened the children on Australian animals, Australian landmarks and Australia icons. As it has been made apparent that the children have been... interested in the recent bush fires in Australia, we also spoke about how wonderful Australians have been to one another during this time of need. We spoke about teamwork and paid tribute to all those affected by the bush fires and our heroic firefighters. This conversation helped us develop a deeper connection and appreciation towards our beautiful environment and its wildlife. We then went for a walk to our local park and enjoyed some morning tea with friends. We enjoyed some Australian themed snacks too, like fairy bread and vegemite sandwiches. Our little chiefs seemed to enjoy making their sandwiches. While at the park we took some time to observe nature and spotted some Australian birds. Some other engaging Australian themed activities we explored were an Australian scavenger hunt, reading some classic Australian stories such as wombat stew, exploring the colours yellow and green and playing football. In the afternoon the children welcomed their families and friends to join us for an Australia Day BBQ. We enjoyed listening to music and spending time with our family while eating yummy sausages! It was also wonderful to see so many children, families and educators at Rainbow work together to support our country during the bushfires. Together we made some yummy treats for charity, that we have collected and put towards an amazing organisation that is saving thousands of wild animals around Australia. https://rainbowchildcare.com.au

07.01.2022 Some snapshots from our Easter celebrations at Rainbow! What an exciting day it was! Our celebrations began early in the morning, as the children were welcomed to their festively decorated classrooms. The children came to Rainbow dressed in their fancy clothes, super excited and already riddled with anticipation for the festive activities to come. As the children arrived and came outside they were beyond happy to realise that the Easter bunny (with the help of Chase our rabbit), had visited! The rest the day was filled with laughter and happiness as we ran, climbed and reached as many Easter eggs as we could- even better, our eggs had surprises inside them! Then to top of a great day, we enjoyed an afternoon Easter high tea. We spent the rest of the day enjoying yummy treats and fun with our friends!

01.01.2022 There is no such thing as bad weather! Children love to be outdoors and being outdoors all year round creates EDUCATIONAL and FUN learning experiences for children of all ages. We are especially excited about this winter season bringing lots of opportunities for us to learn, explore and discover! This winter we have purchased some quality rainwear clothes for our nursery and toddler children to wear while outdoors. That way our crawlers and early walkers can explore the outdoor environment just like their older peers, while also keeping warm, dry and happy! Our educators had developed a book week themed program that encouraged the children to investigate and disc...over stories, look at books, their titles, authors, illustrators and page numbers, explore reading strategies such as retelling the story, story sequences, asking questions and using images to help comprehend the events that occur. We also used the stories we read to help discover new words and their meanings and enjoyed many childrens desired art experiences. This is something we will continue in our daily practices! You may be aware that this years book week theme was "Reading is my superpower" so to coincide with this theme our wonderful educators also placed a focus on exploring stories that particularly inspire a love for reading amongst children, promote imagination, and help children strengthen relationships with others. Have a great week and remember: Every adventure requires a first step! - Cheshire cat.
