21.01.2022 Thanks to this really amazing fella, @solar_whisper David White, we had a stunning couple of hours this afternoon on the Lower Daintree River. The Daintree Riv...er is important in the #rainforest2reef story. Either side of much of the river has been historically cleared for grazing and sugar cane, and even today, wayward development is causing issues for the river and it’s creatures, and puts pressure on water quality flowing onto the Great Barrier Reef. David’s guiding and commentary proved to me that he believes in #realconservation . A great supporter and friend of @rainforestrescueau make sure you check out his IG account... and be sure to call in and see for yourself, next time you’re in the Daintree... he’s right next to the Daintree River ferry (southern side) Thanks again David, ‘twas a brilliant afternoon! 1. Very young #saltwatercrocodile hunting in the shadows. 2. A quite stretch that creates an Island in the river. 3. Azure kingfisher between dives for fish. 4. Papuan Frogmoth imitating a tree. 5. 08.01.2022 Our most recent planting on Fri 18 Sep 2020 resulted in 3,012 new trees at NightWings. Sending out a huge thank you to everyone who came & got their hands dirty! Now, the trees planted earlier in the year need some TLC. The weeds have started creeping in (a common problem on old cane fields) and we need your help to remove them so the baby rainforest trees can grow big enough to form a canopy & regulate the weeds themselves. Please Note: If you are feeling unwell, have been to a declared COVID-19 hot spot in the past 14 days, or have been in contact with a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19, please do not attend the Weeding Day. For many years no one knew what the cassowaries 'distinctive helmet' was for, but in 2019 re...searchers at La Trobe University showed the cranial structure acts like a radiator or thermal window to help the large, flightless birds keep cool in hot weather. Not only are cassowaries critical to the survival of the rainforest because they spread seeds of unique rainforest trees, but by protecting their home, we protect the homes of many other unique and endangered animals including Tree Kangaroos, Spectacled Flying Foxes and Mahogany Gliders.
