20.01.2022 The sun is shining in Ranceby and the Rainbow lorikeets are making a lot of noise in the Red flowering Yellow gum outside. New additions to the farmgate shop are Tree Lucerne and English Box. Don't forget the lemons, tamarillos and figs. Lots of people call in for the raspberries and strawberries in pots. Our specialty at the moment is Orange Cliveas - in flower. Yes we're a dairy farm as well but love growing plants. Find us 10.3 kms north of Korumburra on the road towards Warragul.

18.01.2022 Everyone likes stewed rhubarb and icecream - don't they? Some just prefer the icecream but that's OK. We have just the right variety, Cherry Red rhubarb. It has a more flavoursome, mild taste compared to some of the others. Many years ago we tried to grow it commercially but now that we have access to lots of manure we are having another go! We have a few extra plants so they've gone out to the shop. Looks like $5 for a 7 inch pot.

18.01.2022 The mud has turned to dust around the farm as it always does. Luckily we still have green grass and its nearly Xmas. Seasons can be very variable. In our first year on the farm, 2015, the paddocks dried off at the beginning of December and we also came close to running out of water that Summer. Just as well we (only) had a small herd at that stage! We are well off compared to many farmers in other areas currently struggling with ongoing drought conditions. The mixer wagon is... back in service so the girls get extra dinner after the evening milking before they go back to their beds (in the paddock)! Here's a spectacular plant for your garden. Its a Clivia. They are low with wide dark green leaves. The flowers are bright orange and are really showy. Clivias flower in spring. Clivias are best grown in shade and look really good among ferns. They need a fertile soil or plenty of manure for best results. If you stop by our Ranceby farm bring a bag and fill up with partially composted calf pen bedding. We have 8 inch pots for $10.

17.01.2022 We made our first $ on strawberries. Actually it was $5 for a couple of punnets of strawberries. That was a long time ago at Gembrook where we bought .. yes, a strawberry farm. We picked our strawberries for a couple of years before starting in the plant nursery business. Strawberry plants are fun to grow and who doesn't like strawberries. We have strawberries in 7-8 inch pots for $5. Many have flowers so you will get strawberries on the plants by Christmas. They are Chandle...r variety which is a delicious large fruited variety. Strawberries love a fertile soil so that's why we use compost in our potting mix. Keep them well fed and you will get good results. After fruiting they will put out runners. Plant these out in the garden or pot them up next autumn. PS we also have runners potted into trays at 6,7 or more per tray so its a good way to build up your strawberries quickly.

06.01.2022 Its spring. The grass is growing well and its not too muddy. Some jobs have finished like feeding out on the feed pad. Calving is finished (we hope) but there are still around 60 calves to feed. Some are weaned already and will be going out to the calf paddock this week. Our last lot of calves from autumn calving have just been moved off to our leased block next door. This gives the milkers most of the farm for grazing. We have just started to cut grass for silage. It will ...be baled later this week. The aim is to cut around 200 bales from our paddocks and then to buy in around another 700 bales. That hopefully will keep everyone happy through summer and next winter. As summer approaches and the grass slows down we will start feeding out silage and extra grain on the feed pad. We take photos of all mums and calves and take notes to help with identification later. So we just grab photos however we can - most not framed very well. This mum is a little wary because the calf is new and is just getting on its feet.

06.01.2022 Tree lucerne is a great alternative to pasture especially for awkward corners or steeper slopes. Its a small shrub that's also a legume so it can fix nitrogen. Cows love eating it. Now the really good news is that it stays green during those dry times when the grass is all gone. On our farm we've fenced off some corners in a couple of paddocks to try Tree lucerne. If all goes well the cows can be let into the fenced off areas maybe two or three times per year to browse on th...e Tree lucerne. We've planted them close, about 1.5 m apart. The cows are supposed to eat all the fresh shoots to trim them down. Then the plants can be allowed to put up new stems. So far our first plantings seem to be going well. The cows already know they are there and reach over the fence to have a snack. Tree lucerne is supposed to have the same production and nutritional value as actual lucerne. In the shop we have 2 inch tubes for $1.50 and 3 inch tubes for $2.50.
