25.01.2022 Continuing to exercise your pup during winter is essential for their health. All dogs benefit from exercise during winter but if your dog has arthritis, exercise is an especially important part of managing this disease, as gently moving their joints helps to reduce pain. Try to keep the exercise duration short and avoid strenuous exercise without adequate warm-ups. If possible, aim to walk your pup during the warmest part of the day. Even just a short walk around the block will be beneficial for your dog.

24.01.2022 Our pets seek warmth and comfort during the winter, with outdoor pets the most vulnerable to the cold. If your pets live outdoors, ensure they always have access to dry, warm shelter. For dogs, try a raised kennel with bedding or a cat den with warm bedding for cats. Consider bringing your outdoor pet into the laundry at night or giving your outdoor dog a coat to escape the cold.

24.01.2022 A fear of fireworks is a relatively common problem in pets. They will often show a fear or panic response when the noise starts and can often be difficult to settle until the noise has stopped. If your pet’s fear is severe, we strongly recommend you see one of our vets for a behaviour consultation beforehand. If your pet is only mildly stressed by the noise, keep them inside, turn on the TV, provide them with a safe space (like a crate) and offer them plenty of pats and comfort.

24.01.2022 This is "Isis", just the loveliest, friendliest cat ever. She is named after the Egyptian Goddess, Isis, who was known as a role model for women, was a principal deity in rites for the dead, and cured the sick. She is 10 years old and weighs a whopping 7.4 kg. She is a Maine Coon cat, the largest of all domestic cat breeds. This breed is native to the US state of Maine.

23.01.2022 After the year that’s been, we all need a holiday. And while Bali might be out of the question, there are plenty of things to see and do in Australia. If you’re planning on boarding your dog this summer, make sure their parasite control and vaccinations are up to date. All kennels require proof of current C5 vaccination before accepting your dog. If you’re unsure whether your dog is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.

22.01.2022 Enrichment What is it? Why do we do it? How can we give our pets enrichment? All of these questions are answered in this video!... Nobody wants a bored pet, its just more chances for problem behaviours. Instead of feeding your dog from a bowl, try some of these tips! *WARNING* Please be mindful that leaving your pet alone with activities like these could lead to ingestion of unwanted materials. Supervise your dogs and know their limits. Ranford Team https://www.nina-ottosson.com/

22.01.2022 This is "Ned Flanders" the French Bulldog, sporting a very stylish bandage design after his aural haematoma surgery. An aural haematoma is a blood blister between the layers of cartilage in the ear pinna, which is fixed by suturing the layers of the ear back together. "Ned" had his stitches out today and his ear has healed very well. Mel and Cassey were close at hand to offer moral support, and much more!

22.01.2022 Heat stress is a risk to all pets, but particularly dogs and those kept in cages, such as rabbits and birds. All pets must have access to shade in a well-ventilated area, as well as constant access to cool, fresh water. Dogs should only be exercised in the early morning or evening. If your pets show signs of heat stress, such as open-mouth panting, collapse, or excessive salivating (dogs), contact us immediately. Let’s stay safe this summer.

21.01.2022 Urine spraying in cats can be frustrating and an unwelcome behaviour, but what does it mean? The causes of urine spraying vary between cats, so its important to get to the root cause. Some of our feline friends may spray due to stress and anxiety, territory marking or medical causes, such as renal failure or UTIs. Make an appointment with us to say nay to the spray today.

20.01.2022 If your pet has a thick or double coat, youll notice them start to shed as the winter weather comes to an end. Groomers can help to remove the dead hair from your pets winter coat or if you are keen to do it yourself just make sure you use a brush that is gentle on the skin. Brush in the direction that the hair grows and if you encounter a mat, gently untangle it with your fingers. If your dog has several mats, take them to a groomer for assistance.

20.01.2022 There is a painful dental condition cats can suffer from called FRL (Feline Resorptive Lesions). The condition occurs when the tooth is eaten away, exposing the sensitive pulp of the tooth. Symptoms include lethargy and reduced appetite, and treatment involves removing the affected teeth. Cats with FRL dont always show signs of mouth pain and may require teeth x-rays to diagnose the condition. An important reminder to regularly have your cats teeth checked. Is it time to check your cats teeth?

20.01.2022 On long, cold winter nights, there is no better pet than a cat. Drawn towards warm laps and woollen blankets, cats often become more affectionate during the colder months, as they seek comfort and warmth from their owners. As more than just an excellent hot water bottle, the colder temperatures are a great time to strengthen your bond with your feline friend. Post a picture in the comments of your cat embracing the winter months.

19.01.2022 If you have a cat that goes outside, theyve probably gotten into a fight with another cat at some point. When cats fight, they may use their needle-sharp teeth to puncture the skin of the other cat, which drives bacteria deep into the tissue, leading to a cat bite abscess. Left untreated, these pockets of infection can burst or spread. If you notice your cat has gotten into a punch-up, make an appointment with us, so we can treat the infection before it can become too severe.

19.01.2022 So here at Ranford Vets we are starting to think that Dr Jo may be having all the fun!!! All three puppies are currently attending Puppy School at our hospital on Wednesday evenings. If you have a puppy and are interested in Puppy School then please give us a call on 08 9456 0222.

19.01.2022 With so many different products on the market, it can be hard to know whats the best food for your pet. These general principles will help you buy a good quality, safe food for your furry friend: - Check the food is complete and balanced this means it has all the nutrients your pet needs for daily nutrition - Check for made to AAFCO standards this is another sign the food is complete and balanced - If produced in Australia, check the food complies with the Australian Standard (AS5812:2017), which is voluntary but recommended

19.01.2022 "Will(ow) you marry me?" Is what Dr. Jo said at Willows visit today. She was such a pleasure and didnt mind her needle at all! Perfect puppy visit.

18.01.2022 Sebastian and Samantha These two adorable Birman's are having a lovely, little holiday in a caravan! A very important decision that they both seem very happy with.

18.01.2022 Milo and Mia Two beautiful fairies that graduated our puppy school in June.

18.01.2022 Although COVID gave us all a free pass on 2020’s resolutions, there are some simple new year resolutions you can make for 2021 that are good for you and your pet. Consider walking your pet in new areas, such as exploring a different part of your neighbourhood or visiting the beach. Try brushing your pet’s teeth daily, as teeth brushing is an effective way of reducing bad breath. If you don’t already, make a habit of playing or walking your pet daily.

18.01.2022 If you find a baby bird all by itself one day, take some time to watch, and ensure its parents arent still around caring for it. If the bird is small and not fully feathered, try to find its nest and, if you can, place it back inside the nest. If you arent able to reach its nest, call your local wildlife group to seek further advice. If the bird is injured, just bring them into the clinic and we can check them over.

17.01.2022 When was the last time you wormed your pet? It’s easy to forget our pet’s regular flea and worm preventatives, particularly over the holiday period, yet regular parasite preventatives are key to keeping your pet healthy. If you can’t remember the last time you treated your pet, it’s probably time to give them another dose. There are a range of products available to prevent flea, worm, heartworm and tick infestations in your pet. If you need a hand, give our team a call today.

17.01.2022 Do you have a cat that vomits? Although vomiting can be caused by medical conditions, one normal cause of occasional vomiting in otherwise healthy cats is hairballs. As cats self-groom, they ingest a lot of hair that is normally passed in their faeces, but sometimes this hair is vomited up. If you find your cat vomiting or retching frequently, in large volumes, or is unwell, make an appointment with us today.

16.01.2022 As pets age, their health needs increase. Early detection of disease is the best way to ensure your pet lives a long and happy life. We recommend that senior pets have a health check every six months, as annual checks can be too long apart to pick up disease early. If your senior pet already has a condition, they may need to visit more often. Together, we can ensure your pet lives their best possible life.

16.01.2022 Do you have a dog with hairy ear canals? You might have heard that plucking your dog’s ears can help prevent ear infections, however routinely plucking your dog’s ears results in small tears to the ear canal, likely resulting in mild pain to your dog. We recommend not routinely plucking dog’s ear hair, unless your vet specifically recommends it as part of a treatment plan.

15.01.2022 Giving your dog a bath helps to clean their coat, but its also important to regularly clean your pets toys, bowls and bedding too. This helps remove dirt, germs and odour, as well as any potential flea eggs in the bedding. Use a gentle detergent or washing powder, rinse thoroughly and make sure everything is nice and dry before returning it to your pet to use again.

15.01.2022 Did you get a puppy during the pandemic? As puppies grow, their immune systems grow too. But, there is a window between when they leave their litter and become an adult where they are particularly vulnerable to disease. This is why it’s important we protect their health during the first year of their life. Vaccines provide crucial protection against deadly diseases, like parvovirus. Give us a call if your puppy needs vaccinations today.

15.01.2022 Also known as cognitive decline, feline dementia is a degenerative old age condition. There are also other medical issues that can cause similar symptoms, so if your cat is showing any behavioural changes, it’s best to book a check-up with us for further investigation. In many cases, we can offer effective treatment or management options to help keep your beloved old-timer feeling their best!

14.01.2022 House plants are a great way to bring life and colour to your home but not all plants are compatible with pets. If youve recently gotten new plants (or a new pet), check this list to make sure they arent toxic: - Lilies (including peace lily and lily flowers) - Oleander - Ivy - Sago palms... - Rubber tree plants - Philodendrons - Lantana See more

14.01.2022 We hope you have been enjoying the pictures of our lovely little patients, some of whom are more camera shy than others. Wriggly little "Archer" proved to be a can of worms in nurse Vickis arms in our back yard, but was happy as Larry to pose for his mum at home!

13.01.2022 This is Z We had to remove his eye due to a tumour, but the surgery was successful and he has healed beautifully. Straight back to your old antics now, Z.

13.01.2022 One of the unfortunate side effects of the COVID-19 restrictions is a reported increase in puppy scams. These scams prey on peoples emotions and trap people by selling puppies online that never existed. To avoid these scams, try to always meet your potential pups mother and view their breeding facility in person before handing over any money. This will also help prevent buying a puppy from unscrupulous or dodgy breeders.

12.01.2022 As pets get older, their dietary requirements change. Older pets need less energy in their food but benefit from nutritional support that eases the symptoms of arthritis or cognitive decline. If you have a cat over 11 years of age, a small dog over 8 years of age or a large dog over 5 years of age, they could benefit from a specially-formulated diet for senior pets. Call our clinic for more information.

11.01.2022 Are you fe-line like you need a holiday? If you're planning a getaway this summer, it’s important to check your cat has everything they need before boarding. Make sure your cat’s parasite control and vaccinations are up-to-date. All catteries require proof of current F3 vaccination before accepting your cat. If you’re unsure whether your cat is fully vaccinated, or you know they’re overdue, give us a call today.

11.01.2022 When plaque and tartar build up on your dogs teeth, bacteria can infect the gum tissue and enter the bloodstream, ending up in your dogs heart, causing heart disease. This is why regular health checks for your pet are so important, so that any potential teeth problems can be picked up early. If your pooch hasnt had a check-up with us recently, book in for a consultation today.

11.01.2022 Canine cough, or kennel cough for its link with boarding kennels, is brought about by a group of viruses and bacteria that cause upper respiratory disease in dogs. Many causes of kennel cough can be vaccinated against, but your dog must be vaccinated annually for them to be fully protected (much like the human flu vaccine). Signs of kennel cough include a harsh, dry cough, loss of bark/voice, fatigue and nasal discharge.

11.01.2022 Kodie Cheeky Kodie came to us yesterday after swiping a bone before his mum got it to the bin. She tried to stop him but he was too quick and he got it lodged in his mouth. Must have been sore!... Luckily he was good enough for us to pull it out without any anaesthetic required! This is a reminder to be super careful with bones around your pets and always be proactive about keeping them out of reach. Any queries please call us on 9456 0222

10.01.2022 With rent, bills and all meals supplied our pets get it pretty good. There is, however, the risk that our pets can overeat if their food is too readily available, which can lead to obesity and other health concerns. To help prevent overeating, only give your pet access to food at designated meal times for a limited period. Keep your pet active with exercise and stimulation activities, so that theyre not only focused on food. Speak with us for advice on how much food to feed your pet, as sometimes food volume can be reduced.

10.01.2022 Does your cat get anxious when its time for a trip to the vet? Fortunately there are steps you can take to help make their experience a little less stressful. Get your cat used to their pet carrier before their appointment with us by practicing putting them in the carrier for short periods of time. You can also create a positive association for them by sneaking a few treats into the carrier. Speak to us about calming medications and pheromone sprays that could help keep your cat calm for their next visit with us.

10.01.2022 If you think your middle-aged or elderly pet is a bit less mobile than they used to be, book them in for a check-up! We can recommend supportive treatment options to suit every budget and pet.

09.01.2022 Cats can come into season multiple times a year and breed easily, so it’s important to have your cat desexed to prevent unwanted kittens and other potential issues. Cat shelters often have large numbers of kittens needing to be re-homed, so the best advice is whether your cat is male or female, do the right thing by your cat and get them desexed now! Contact our team for more information about desexing your pet.

09.01.2022 Have you noticed your pet shaking their head or scratching their ears more than usual? It might indicate a problem with their ears. Its a good idea to check your pets ears when youre giving them a pat or brush. Look for signs of black or waxy discharge in the ear canals, red scratches on their ears, a yeasty or strong odour coming from the ear canal or irritation or pain when you touch their ears. If you have any concerns, it is always best to bring them in for a check-up.

09.01.2022 Regular brushing of your pets teeth helps to prevent the buildup of plaque and tartar and reduce the risk of gum disease. Bacteria from unhealthy teeth and gums can enter the bloodstream, which can cause disease in the heart, liver and kidneys. Book your pet in for a dental check with us today.

09.01.2022 Stanley showing off at puppy class! So confident to walk through such a little space! If you're interested in puppy preschool please call us on 9456 0222

08.01.2022 If your pets coat is looking a little worse for wear since winters end, dont fret, skin and coat health can be maintained with just a few simple steps. Firstly, ensure your pet is on regular flea control and fed a good quality diet. Wash your pet in a gentle, pH-balanced shampoo and only as often as needed. There are numerous skin conditions that can affect pets, so visit the clinic or call us today if you notice any new or unusual changes to your pets skin conditions.

08.01.2022 With the announcement that Coles will be rolling out a self-serve Pet Treat Bar in every store, the idea of spoiling your dog every grocery trip has excited many pet owners. While the occasional treat is a great way to indulge your pup, its important to remember many of these treats are high in fat, salt or both. Use treats only occasionally, and if you notice your dog experiencing any gastrointestinal issues after feeding treats, get in touch.

07.01.2022 How often you should wash your dog depends on their breed, lifestyle and skin health. If your dog is a short-coated breed that lives outside, they probably only need to be washed with gentle dog shampoo twice a year. If you have a long-coated breed, or a dog that lives inside, or one that goes swimming regularly, you might want to wash more often. Dog’s don’t need to be bathed weekly, unless they have a skin condition that requires medicated shampoo.

07.01.2022 At around twelve months old, your cat will be fully grown and will therefore have lower energy requirements. At this stage, they should be transferred onto a good quality, complete and balanced adult cat diet, to prevent excess weight gain. Consider the use of a neutered or indoor cat diet if your cat is to be kept purely indoors, as generally these pets have even lower energy requirements. Ask our team for dietary advice for your cat if you’re unsure!

06.01.2022 As fleas dont reproduce as rapidly in winter as they do in other seasons, it might seem easier not to worry about pet flea control during this period. However, if you heat your house or have a surprise flea nest in your skirting boards, bypassing your pets regular flea preventatives may risk your house being overrun with the parasite. Continue to use flea preventatives year-round and throughout winter to keep your home parasite-free.

06.01.2022 Picture this: It’s 3am, you’re in a deep and restful sleep, only to be awoken by a cat running over your bed and bouncing off the walls. It’s likely your pet has been struck by a case of the ‘zoomies’, also known as Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPS). Zoomies are experienced by many animals including dogs, rabbits and cats - greyhounds are especially famous for their bursts of energy. It is thought that the zoomies allow pets to release pent up energy, relieve stress and enjoy play.

06.01.2022 Did you know that around a third of all pet cats and dogs are overweight? The easiest way to help your pet lose weight is to switch their food to a specially formulated low energy or weight loss diet. These diets are still complete and balanced, though they contain less energy to help pets gradually lose weight. While trying to lose weight, it’s important that pets don’t get any extra food or treats. If you’re worried about your pet’s weight, make an appointment with us today.

06.01.2022 Do you have a pet rabbit? Also known as ‘long eared guinea pigs’ in Queensland, rabbits can be desexed just like cats and dogs. Desexing or neutering your rabbit can have many benefits, including avoiding unwanted pregnancy and greatly reducing the risk of mammary cancer in female rabbits. It also allows male and female rabbits to be housed together. Call us today if you would like your rabbit desexed.

05.01.2022 Muffin Muffin was due for her shave, and wow, look how much came off! She must be feeling so free with all that weight off. Also, how cute is she! ... We only groom pets that need sedation or a general anaesthetic. If you think that your pet might need a clip please give us a call on 9456 0222.

05.01.2022 As the cold and wet days linger through winter, remember to keep your pet warm, dry and comfortable. Carefully place your pets bed out of the weather and away from draughts, with a dry towel or rug to keep them warm. Coats can also help to protect your dog from the rain and keep them warm. Colder weather can also exacerbate arthritis in older pets with stiff joints, so chat with us today if you have any health concerns about your pet during winter. With a little TLC, your pet can stay warm and cosy while outside gets wet and cold.

05.01.2022 As the weather starts heating up, you might be wondering if you still need to use jackets and coats to keep your dog warm at night. If your dog has a short coat or low body fat, they will be more sensitive to the cold and will benefit from a winter jacket for longer. A good rule of thumb: if you see your dog shivering, or if the temperature is under 10 degrees, they will still benefit from a coat at night.

04.01.2022 Have you acquired backyard chickens recently? Here are a few tips to help keep them healthy: - Ensure you have predator-proof shelter to keep your chickens safe and comfortable - Feed them a good quality poultry pellet as well as vegetable scraps and insects from your garden - Worm your chickens regularly If you notice any signs of disease, get in touch with the clinic, as birds will often hide illness until they are very sick.

04.01.2022 A few extra snacks and more comfy couch-time is likely translating to a bit of excess weight gain - and not just in us humans. Due to reduced activity and increased access to food, this downtime may have also added a few extra pounds to our pets. Before taking steps to reduce your pets weight, ask us for advice to ensure your pets weight-loss plan is safe and appropriate. We can weigh your pet and help you develop a sustainable plan to get them back to a healthy size.

03.01.2022 With winter well and truly here, you might have acquired an unwanted possum guest in your house. The first step to show your new guest out the door is learning what you can and cant do about it. Possums are a protected species in most states of Australia, so check with your local council before taking any action. Once youve blocked their access to your roof, consider offering an alternative such as a possum box in a tree in your backyard.

02.01.2022 Cats have a natural instinct to scratch in order to maintain their claws, mark their territory, and just have a good old stretch! If your cat spends a reasonable amount of time indoors, it helps to provide them with two pieces of scratching furniture: a tall vertical, carpet-covered scratching post that allows them to stretch up fully during use, and a sturdy, stable horizontal scratching pad. Your furniture and your cat will thank you!

02.01.2022 If you have changed your phone number or address since your pet was microchipped, then it’s time to update their chip details. Check the paperwork that came with your pet’s microchip, as often you can call or update details online. If you no longer have that paperwork, check your pet’s microchip on www.petaddress.com.au to find out which registry they are on. If you don’t know your pet’s microchip number, just bring them into the clinic and we can scan their chip for the number.

01.01.2022 URGENT REMINDER about SNAIL PELLETS!!! "Sherbie" and I love our garden but we find snails a bit of a trial, as I am sure many of you do too, but please dont be tempted to use ANY type of snail pellets, even the ones labelled "Pet Safe". On Sunday afternoon Dr Graeme and Nurse Ebony spent several hours working on one of our patients, flushing all the snail pellets out of his gastrointestinal system, and essentially saving his life. The 4 month old puppy from the same family also required emergency care. Both dogs recovered well, thank gooodness! We use beer traps and go out on wet evenings to manually remove snails which keeps them under control and "Sherbie" healthy. Does anyone else have any other pet safe snail tips they could share? Happy, safe Spring gardening. Dr Kelly and "Sherbie".

01.01.2022 Though they are bundles of joy, kids and puppies need their interactions monitored in order to stay safe. If pushed far enough, any dog can bite. Thats why its essential to be adamant about training and socialising your dog. Teach your kids to read dog behaviour a growl means its time to back off. Establishing boundaries and providing safe spaces for your dog is also important. Try giving your pup a little me time by using a child gate to portion off sections of your house.
