19.01.2022 This little cutie has just gone home after a complete makeover. It’s SO enjoyable to be able to give new life to such superb old chairlooms! This one has spent at least 100 years on a local dairy farm and appeared to me to still be in its original upholstery (very unusual!) The new cover fabric is a remnant of superb jacquard fabric the client spotted in my stash (there’s still a little left!) All set for another 100years!... #reupholstery #upholstery #makeover #furniturerestoration #chairloom #antiques #upholsteryfab

19.01.2022 Ta-dah! All done - client has been and collected and LOVES this transformation of her Granny’s chair. The final steps taken since the last post were: Attaching the skirt (staples and hand-sewing), Training the pleats (pins and steam), Tidying up the nether-regions under the skirt,... And final touch attaching the brand label ( originally it was hanging out in full view at the back, which I thought was a little unnecessary). . . Thankyou all for the great feedback and interest you’ve shown in this project. I’ll look forward to sharing more with you in future and always welcome feedback and questions. . . Most fabrics you see on my posts are available for sale from me. They’re nearly all premium furnishing fabrics, from top fabric houses around the world. I’m happy to sell to you by order - if you see something you like please DM or email me and I’ll send pricing. The fabrics used on this little chair are from @warwickfabrics - printed on heavy cotton, and come in a great choice of colours. The small geometric and large floral designs go together like a dream. . . And finally, when we’re back to normal after C19, as soon as it’s allowed, I’ll be again offering a range of workshops in my Jamberoo NSW workroom - including upholstery and lampshade making. Let me know if you’d like to be put on the mailing list for notice of when that becomes a possibility. . . #reupholstery #upholstery #beforeandafter #transformation #makeover #chairloom @ Curramore See more

15.01.2022 Thankyou to everyone for the great response to yesterday’s post, showing the first steps of reupholstering this little old bedroom chair. It was really great to hear from so many of you saying you’d love me to continue this, so here goes: Next steps we’re making the skirt (I do LOVE a box-pleat skirt and think it really makes all the difference on some chairs); followed by my least favourite job in upholstery : making channels for the imside back. This time it went much bette...r than ever before because I was trying out a new method I’ve recently seen, so Yay!; after installing the inside back to the seat frame then it was hand-sewing the outside back on; then hand sewing the seat border on; Then it was attaching the skirt, but I’ve run out of photo space for this post so that will have to wait for tomorrow. Please let me know if you’re enjoying the process, and feel free to ask questions. . . #reupholstery #antique #bedroomchair #makeover #chairloom @ Curramore See more

14.01.2022 This is me back in 2012, close to finishing my Trade Certificate at Lidcombe TAFE NSW. This stool was my first traditional upholstery project (springs, stuffings, hand-stitched rolled edges). TAFE then was a brilliant, productive, bustling place full of committed, skilled teachers and a wide variety of students, including young apprentices right through people of all ages, diversities and abilities. As a middle-aged woman I was right in the middle of this wide spectrum, and ...what surprised me greatly was the variety of entry methods people could access the range of courses on offer. It seemed to me that TAFE (the Government) really wanted us all there and tried to make it relatively easy to get in for anyone who showed an interest. Sadly, lots has changed at TAFE these days. The opportunities for learning this fabulous trade are hugely diminished due to (IMO) astonishingly short-sighted government funding decisions. Tomorrow (Sat3rdOct) morning I’ll be taking part in a discussion on the subject of women in non-traditional trades, on ABC Sydney radio (between 9.30 & 10am I’m told). Please listen in, or better still call in if you’d like to take part. Ph 1300 222 702 @abcinsydney @salttradeswomen

12.01.2022 Just finished 7 days walking the stunning Sydney coastline with a great group of friends, staying in diff, varied accommodation each night, following undulating paths along beaches, over headlands, through rocky inlets, and countless stairs up and down well-trodden boardwalks, averaging around 20klm a day. 11.01.2022 This little childs’ wingchair has been in my client’s family since it was built, in Cleveland Ohio, USA in the early 1920s, so it’s now a centenarian! It’s been loved by several generations since it was brought to Australia, and my brief was complete restoration with a free hand in fabric choice as long as it was very colourful and mismatched. Well, that was no trouble for me - my fabric stash is extensive, and dominated by colour - the problem was CHOOSING! That took a whi...le. . . The chair was collected today - I was quite nervous about the client’s reaction to what I’d done with her precious chairloom... I needn’t have been - she was thrilled. . . All set for another century! See more

10.01.2022 This little chair has a BIG story - settle in if you’d like to hear it... . . PART 1 My clients, a middle-aged couple, brought me this chair in extremely poor condition, but it being the last of a valued set of diners passed down through the family, really wanted to save this one. The wood is local Red Cedar, which our part of Australia was famous for in the early days of the colony (not much cedar left now).... They told me that it’s been on ‘his’ to-do list in the workshop for over 30years, in fact from before they were married he promised he’d restore it for her as a gift for her home office. 30 years or so later, it’s now had the full Chairy Godmother treatment in the Rapt workroom - and has been collected into their delighted hands and is back home where it belongs. . . PART 2 I’m no antique expert and can only ever have a stab at guessing the age of these sort of chairs. However, in this instance, pretty clear evidence came to light during the stripping process - newspaper was part of the original stuffings, under multiple layers (like tree rings) of upholstery covers. This included some scrabbled-up newspapers, a few of which I was able to unscrunch and read. Couldn’t tell where published, or by whom, but a few dates of 1874 were visible. I read a moving article, the printing still sharp and clear despite font size of approximately -2, about the recent tragic drowning deaths of 2 young men on a lake - and it got me thinking for quite a while how funny life is. Who would’ve thought, way back then when that sad story was written, that here I’d be in 2020, standing in my comfortable workroom in beautiful Jamberoo, with tears in my eyes reading this sad story, with all the sadness going on in the world around me? . . Life’s certainly a strange thing isn’t it? I do hope you, my dear reader, wherever you are, are doing ok in these strange times, and if you’re really lucky like me, are able to keep your hands and heart busy with satisfying work such as this. . .
