29.04.2022 HOW NICE WOULD IT BE TO SEE ANOTHER JEWISH FACE Ben recently received a long-awaited pharmacist placement in the Albury-Wodonga hospital system. Arriving in Albury, he settled in and was put right to work, taking on long shifts throughout the week. Growing up in a traditional home in the Melbourne Jewish community, it was quiet a change to go from the bagel belt to faraway Albury-Wodonga. The population of the twin cities is roughly 100,000, but the Jewish population is muc...Continue reading

01.04.2022 Staying connected with a Jewish community can be difficult when you live in a town with very few, or even no other Jews. That’s the reality for a lot of Jewish people living across the country. For one reason or another, many of us have landed in places where we become a tiny minority. , 15 . ...Continue reading

15.03.2022 Mark lives in a number of remote locations in Victoria and South Australia. On a good day, his nearest neighbour is 92 kilometeres down the road! So when he was in Melbourne for a few hours yesterday to take care of some things, it was the perfect opportunity to catch up with him and his friend Baruch. We first me Mark at a brief lunch stop in Cann River, VIC during our 2020 Chanuka Trip, and have stayed in touch since. Mark was happy to put on the Tefillin (pictured) and sha...red with us what it's like to live on a remote station in Marree - Outback SA. If you're in Melbourne and want to say hello, let us know! We'd love to catch up.

13.02.2022 MAZEL TOV ON THE NEW ARRIVAL! The Newcastle Hebrew Congregation today danced and sang as they welcomed a brand new Torah into their midst. Handwritten on parchment with organic ink and a feather quill, the Torah is the connection between our generations of old and the bright future of Judaism. It was an honour to be a part of the celebration of the beautiful Torah dedicated by Mr Max and Ben Lenzer in honour of their parents who were stalwarts of the community. As the Scribe..., Rabbi Eli Gutnick, completed the last few letters, the community milled around, fascinated and in awe of what is often a once in a lifetime experience. It was a connection of past, present and future. Of the vibrancy of Judaism, still relevant in these modern days. Representing Chabad of RARA, Mr Saul Spigler and Rabbi Menachem Aron were thrilled to be a part of the festivities, marvelling at the growth of the Newcastle community. What nachas to see after so many years of RARA visits up the coast. DID YOU KNOW that a Torah contains 304,805 letters, and is about 60 meters long from one end of the scroll to the other. It is written entirely by hand and it's no wonder we make a big celebration when it is completed.

10.02.2022 THE GREATEST HONOUR FOR THE MAN WE NEVER MET It started with an email forwarded on from another Melbourne Synagogue. Gillian had reached out, wanting to put her friend Michael in touch with a Rabbi. Perhaps they could come down to the Mornington Peninsula and give Michael a visit.... Michael was an older Jew who had no close family. Having retired about 20 years prior, as he got along in years, Michael wanted to connect back with his Jewish faith. Rabbi Menachem Aron contacted Michael via telephone, and a lovely conversation ensued. "Jewish people need to be proud!" said Michael in a soft but powerful voice. "When they walk down the street, they should always wear a Yarmulke" said Michael emphatically. "And when all this COVID clears up, we'll go for a coffee. I'd love to talk to you for a few hours." A short while later, In mid January, plans were made to take the "short" (in RARA terms) trip down to Portsea to see Michael in person. Unfortunately, that was not to be. A COVID case resulted in a lockdown of the age care where Michael was living, and before there was a chance to go down and give him a visit, Michael's time came to an end, and he was called up on High. This past Friday Michael received a Jewish burial at the Melbourne Chevra Kadisha cemetery in Lyndhurst, VIC. A small ceremony took place, with members of the Melbourne Jewish community coming together to make up a Minyan so that Kaddish could be recited for Michael. Although almost all those present at the funeral had never met Michael, they came out to give him the farewell that every Jewish person deserves. Michael may not have crossed paths with too many Jewish people in recent years, but his yearning for connection as he reached 83 years old was not for naught. The connection was made, and he subsequently merited to receive one of the greatest honours - a Jewish burial. May his memory be a blessing. Chabad of RARA extends our thanks and appreciation to Gillian, Michael's carer who took care of his every need for the past two decades. Additionally, we thank the Melbourne Chevra Kadisha for assisting with Michael's funeral arrangements. photo: Rabbi Menachem Aron (center) officiating at Michael's burial

19.01.2022 Rabbi Menachem Aron shares some ideas about the holiest day of the year.

19.01.2022 Last Wednesday, we loaded the car and hit the road. Destination: North-east Victoria, where we would be visiting a number of new and old contacts that we had in the area. Our first stop was with Jim in Wangaratta. Jim shared some fascinating stories of growing up as a Jew in the outback, and was sure to leave us with some RARA gold - a few new names that we didn't know of in the area. Then we were off to Heinz, someone we had only recently gotten in touch with. Heinz lives in... Beechworth, and it was a real pleasure to get to meet him and his family. We laid Tefillin, and Heinz proudly hung a Mezuza on his front door with us. By now it was getting late, and the kids were getting very cranky, but we squeezed in one last visit for the day with Josh in Wodonga, where we discussed the upcoming holidays of Purim and Pesach, and made a Lchaim with some kosher wine. Join with us and make stories like these happen - in just a few days, our annual fundraiser will take place, on Sunday, Feb 14. Continue the story at charidy.com/rara.

18.01.2022 Baruch Dayan Ha’emes. With profound sadness, we mourns the passing of Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, of blessed memory. 07.01.2022 Keeping kosher is never an easy commitment, all the more so during COVID-19. We received a call from Josh in Wodonga, who has kept a kosher home for over 50 years. Of course, there is no kosher meat in Wodonga. In better times. Josh places an order at one of Melbournes butchers, and has a family member drive it up to him every month. With stage 3 restrictions, this became increasingly difficult coordinate, and once stage 4 hit, it was almost impossible. Josh gave us a ring a...nd explained his predicament. Right away, we got on to it. After some google searches and a few phone calls, we got in touch with Natalie and her team at Cold Xpress, a company that specialises in refrigerated and frozen transport logistics. We explained the sutuation, and the necessary forms were filled. After a few attempts, the meat was delivered from the butcher to the courier, and at 9:30 this morning, the driver pulled up his truck outside Joshs house, and handed over his kosher goodies. Initially worried that he would have to go without meat until after the lockdown, Josh was absolutely thrilled to receive his order! Do you need help getting kosher food in regional Australia? Reach out and we will do our very best to help!

Michael's funeral will take place Friday 28 Jan, 12:00pm at Melbourne Chevra Kadisha Cemetery, 200 Glasscocks Rd, Lyndhurst VIC 3975.... 01.01.2022 What a wonderful gathering we had in Warrnambool this past Thursday, celebrating Tu B'shvat - the "Rosh Hashana" for trees. A special thanks to Mr Mat Gelman, who was in the area and organized the gathering. Mat shared thoughts on the significance on the day, and some fresh fruit was enjoyed by all. On the topic of fruits, here's one interesting thing we can learn from a grape: If you hold up a grape to the light, and look at it from below, you'll see the little grape seed in...side of it. But if you look down on a grape, the light won't shine through, and you won't see anything inside. That little grape seed is the soul. Sometimes, when we look at others, we need to make sure we are seeing them the from the correct perspective - looking up at them, seeing them above us. Then we see their soul, the good in them. But if we look down on someone, we see them lower than ourselves, then we won't be able to see through, and won't perceive the soul and all the good within. See more
