17.01.2022 Post by Manjula Viswanath What is an arangetram, is it necessary for a dancer? Based on my personal experience, I would say YES! It is absolutely necessary. Arangetram is the first performance by the dancer after learning the whole Margam. As an audience when you watch the performer doing her solo debut it is extremely delightful. But as a performer it is a journey that enhances your inner soul to shine more brightly. ... Every student is aware of the high degree of challenge they are facing. It is not just getting through the practise hours of that evening, but it is that sleepless night the vision of fear of failing while performing to an audience that poses a greater challenge. It is that first debut performance and the thought there would not be a second chance is the drive to make sure you exceed expectations. Performing on stage all by yourself requires a lot of guts, perseverance, determination, and focus. It helps a student understand the power of music, perfecting each move, dancing spontaneously to a live orchestra, letting the movement come from within, tuning out all distractions, forgetting the audience and the lights, and dancing on stage only to get in touch with the inner self to deliver a cathartic performance. This requires a lot of rigorous training both by the teacher and the student. It is a transformation that is a sight to behold and literally see the dancer go through the experience being portrayed through the performance. This instant change brings about a certain confidence and faith mixed with nervousness, anxiety, and a thrilling sense. This concoction of emotions in the young dancer is the most exciting and unforgettable experience at the threshold of the Arangetram. The results of the arangetram are personal growth, incredibly strong connection to cultural roots that the student is free at any time to pursue to deepen, very strong personal relations with the teacher, and a sense of belonging and an understanding of their own importance 'Arangetram' or initiation on stage ... just the beginning, not the end. To Conclude Arangetram need not be an expensive affair. It can be simple to a grand event ; it is entirely up to the parents to decide how the event should turn out.
