20.01.2022 Proserpine Hospital’s Indigenous Hospital and Community Liaison Officer Davina Linneweber is extremely passionate in Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander and Aust...ralian South Sea Islander health, specifically rural health. Davina is a proud Boigu and Thursday Island woman, has family connections with the Gooreng Gooreng People of Tannum Sands in the Gladstone region and is of Australian South Sea Islander heritage. Davina’s role allows her to work with many local communities across the greater Whitsunday Health Service on Gia (Proserpine), Ngaro (Cannonvale), Juru (Bowen) and Birriah (Collinsville) Country. The work contributions that I feel most proud about are the patients that I have seen take control of their health which have led to improving their outcomes, Davina said. Our mob will often put the health of others before their own needs, especially our Elders. However, helping people understand and making their own health a priority is extremely important. Thank you, Davina, we appreciate and value your commitment to the health and wellbeing of our communities. #NAIDOC2020

11.01.2022 For the first time in 70 years, a traditionally made canoe has appeared on the Baarka (Darling River) in Wilcannia, North Western NSW. The project was a team ef...fort between Wilcannia Central School, local artists and the Art Gallery of New South Wales through the Djamu Regional Program for Indigenous Art Education. The local custodians, the Barkindji regard the Baarka as "their mother" and lifeblood. The means of making the canoe was passed on from modern-day elders who first witnessed this practice as children. All parties involved were hopeful that recreating this practice will allow for a broader interest in NSW Aboriginal cultures from all people across the State. 04.01.2022 SECOND COVID-19 DETECTION - CAIRNS WASTEWATER: There has been a second detection of traces of COVID-19 in sewage at the Cairns North Wastewater Treatment Plant ...and a new detection at Cairns South Wastewater Treatment Plant. These samples were taken on 24-25 November 2020. This follows the detection of traces of COVID-19 in the wastewater from northern Cairns on 17 November 2020. These surveillance tests are extremely sensitive and can pick up tiny pieces of the genetic material of the virus. While unlikely, we cannot rule out the detection is from an active COVID-19 case or a recovered case. We are therefore encouraging people to get tested immediately if they are unwell. Anyone with any symptoms of COVID-19, no matter how mild, should get tested. Symptoms include: fever (37.5 degrees or more), cough, breathing difficulties, sore throat, loss of smell or taste, runny nose, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue. There is a drive-through testing clinic at 43 Aumuller St, Cairns and a walk-in Testing Clinic at Cairns Hospital. Phone 4226 4781 for an appointment at either clinic. (Please leave a message if the line is busy and we will call you back.) To learn more about the wastewater detection from our Director of Tropical Public Health Services, and see the list of suburbs affected, see full details here https://www.health.qld.gov.au//covid-19-detected-in-cairns For all testing locations head to: www.covid19.qld.gov.au If you have any concerns for your health, phone your GP, 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or present to your closest emergency department.
