19.01.2022 One of my favorite things to do, is switch out War Machine’s hammock. War Machine is currently my oldest girl. She will be a grandmother spider very soon. She... hasn’t made her own web in awhile. She is still active, still very able and willing to hunt on her own, and very interested in sticking her little head out and seeing what’s going on. But without the ability to make web she cannot build a hammock to sleep in, or hide out in and feel safe. This is where my younger spiders come in. They build hammocks everywhere. Then they leave them and build more hammocks. It’s like they take the ability to produce web for granted. But their abandoned hammock or old molting web is a treasure to a spider like War Machine. After awhile the one she is using gets too disheveled and messed up, so they get replaced with another one that was left behind and forgotten. This is after i show her the new one, and she crawled inside, and excitedly adjusted it to her liking, made it her own, and settled in. See more

11.01.2022 We have a clutch of Children’s Pythons hatching. One has already had a couple of strikes at us so that’s a great sign so cute . Will be a few more days before they are all out fully but welcome little guys

11.01.2022 We only bred one clutch of Children’s Pythons this year (having 4 kids now we were conservative ) but we did get a surprise This is Murphy - hatched on 27th November with 2 kinks in his spine (I have rescued snakes with kinks before and injuries etc but never hatched one like this ) and we honestly thought he wouldn’t make it through his first shed. So after he shed, perfectly of course he was straight away striking - we are still mastering the art of where to position... the pinky to get it in his mouth which is a little comical but here he is enjoying a pinky again yesterday - he has been pooping and behaving as normal (well apart from the obvious issue which just seems to be slowing him down ever so slightly) and the kids are thrilled we have given him every chance of survival. I am personally not sure of his chances but he is a fighter for sure so will continue to give him every opportunity and see where it leads See more

10.01.2022 Coastal Taipans Oxyuranus scutellatus are among our most intelligent snakes. This species has spatial memory - there are stories of people chasing wild taipans... watching them avoid easily moved cover sites for more secure sites further away. This indicates that not only are they making an active choice or evaluating which cover is more secure but that they can remember where in its home range the cover is. They also can tell the difference between people. We have had Taipans over the years that have come from various people. One 7footer we had called "cranky" was an animal that had always been head-restrained by the previous owner. We spent years slowly adjusting the snake to hook and tail. He was always nervous but had stopped striking every time you walked near the cage. 5 years and 2 months after the moving "Cranky" into our care the previous owner popped in for a visit. Well this snake went absolutely nuts. Repeatedly striking at the cage, venom flowing down the side of the cage. This snake went into rage all on this bloke entering the room. It is this sort of intelligence that makes them so much more dangerous than Pseudonaja but also one of the reasons we both love working with them as a species. The animal pictured is a fairly quiet individual that Scott and I both like. What instances of reptilian intelligence have you got that you can share? Tie.
