21.01.2022 Great opportunity to speak about some basic small business HR practices today at Carbon Group. Thanks to Michelle Maynard for the invite and speech about the accounting side of running a business. Reminds me how HR and accounting face similar basic compliance issues - all of which can be easily solved. I also took the time to jot down notes from my fellow speakers Tim Svehlak, Cat Holmes: Benchmark Coach and Kathleen Pichaud...running a small business means taking opportunities to improve whenever they arise! And finally, a special cheers to the ever bubbly Jacqueline Campbell for her engaging intros and crowd control. :)

20.01.2022 "It was a horrifying moment, completely mortifying..." says Lush Australia Director Peta Granger of the moment they realised their payroll system hadnt kept up with their business growth. They found the error through an internal review eight years after it first occurred and are now taking action to organise backpay plus interest to the estimated tune of $2m - including to staff who no longer work for the business. To avoid future problems, the start of the financial year is... a good time to check your payroll system is up to date and that you are paying the correct rates in line with recent award increases which came into force on 1 July. Talk to your #bookkeeper and check out the information about those rate rises: - employers covered by the WA system https://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/labour-re/wa-award-summaries - employers covered by the national system https://www.fairwork.gov.au//2018-annual-wage-review-our-p #solvingpeopleproblems #solidbusinessfoundations

20.01.2022 ICYMI A handy overview of the employment law implications of public holidays from the Small Business Development Corporation WA - as their business adviser Brian Childs says Payment of staff entitlements that are fact-based is the best way to preserve the internal goodwill between owner and employees and to protect the businesses most valuable asset.

19.01.2022 New family and domestic violence unpaid leave entitlements take effect from 1 August 2018 (for staff under the Fair Work System award). So, here are some starting points for you to prepare and plan for this new type of leave: - Review your current leave policies to align with the new entitlement... - Update leave application forms / processes with new wording - Ensure your timesheets and record keeping can capture the new leave - Communicate the new leave to your workforce - especially around how it interacts with existing leave types. Employers may also want to consider training managers in how to respond to family and domestic violence issues in the workplace as its a complex issue with significant consequences. Check your award for the details and read more at the Fair Work Ombudsman website #solidbusinessfoundations

18.01.2022 Fair Work continue to pursue businesses who breach workplace record-keeping requirements. 15.01.2022 I love this article. Ive had managers who Ive felt really cared about me - as a person - whove been able to give me pretty tough feedback because I felt they had my best interests at heart. And unfortunately, Ive had others whove either avoided giving me feedback altogether (because #awkward), or have given me harsh feedback which when I think about it, still stings now. But I know if I dont get the chance to get constructive feedback, Im missing out on a chance to gro...w and keep improving. So as a manager I try to make sure to build positive personal relationships and learn about what people want to get out of work, so that if I do have to give negative feedback, they know it comes from a place of genuine respect and care for them as a person. Not always easy to do, and it does take time, but critical if youre putting people at the heart of your business. #allaboutthehumans

09.01.2022 Key workforce takeaways from todays Global Mining Leaders 2018 conference: - when introducing innovation, focus on your people *before* you focus on the data, systems and processes - a diverse workforce is important for a culture of innovation - when youre thinking about implementing new technology make sure you really understand how your staff already work, and how it will impact on them... - workforce changes mean were likely to be facing 50 year careers giving a new slant to career planning - change is now a constant and we need to move away from talking about change fatigue and help teams build change resilience Thanks to The AusIMM - Minerals Institute for the chance to attend the conference #solidbusinessfoundations #readyablewilling #resources

08.01.2022 Another sage post from SBDC. I hope I speak for all honest HR practitioners out there when I say we should be supporting businesses and workers alike with fair and open advice. For us at RAW Human Resources, this has always included advising on (and giving the links to) the huge amount of free resources out there. I know many other HR practitioners feel the same way- and building such trust will result in business. Where we can improve and add value above and beyond the free resources then becomes our differentiator. PS, we often refer businesses to the Small Business Development Corporation WA as theyre a great gateway to a lot of information and we personally use them ourselves.

Hear this and lots more in a morning packed full of essential information for small businesses...

07.01.2022 The Fair Work Ombudsman have updated their website recently and the ease of finding information has improved yet again! We always link clients to information here as a robust starting point to understanding their obligations and to begin de-risking their people capability. Interested to see for yourself? Heres a link to their *free* templates to whet your appetite.

04.01.2022 Lots of talk recently in the media about record improvements in job ad growth...inspired me to write a blog for SMEs to consider how they can plan. PS interesting what the government pundits are predicting as the future industries to experience the most growth.

04.01.2022 The not-for-profit sector accounts for 8% of GDP at $129b. Today Clare was at the Learning for Purpose roadshow getting an overview of some of the people issues in this sector. https://learningforpurpose.org/ The report is comprehensive (and very readable) and well worth digesting if you work in or with this sector. Some of our #takeaways:... - when it comes to performance, staff engagement is a major positive influence - high levels of engagement and belief in ones work abilities (self-efficacy) lead to improved work performance and more innovative behaviours - good people systems (like recruitment, performance management and internal communications) can impact positively on work satisfaction and engagement Non-profit organisations can get a free assessment of their organisation and people - see online at https://learningforpurpose.org//workforce-analytics-dashb/ This was one of the events which makes up the Social Impact Festival which is taking place throughout July. You can find the rest of the program online https://socialimpactfestival.org/ #solvingpeopleproblems #engageyourstaffgrowyourbusiness #sifest18
